It will be interesting to hear what sort of safeguards they are going to put in place in america to stop these sorts of attacks happening in future. Doubt they will stop selling these guns to joe public or start interning muslims for agressive social media posts so not sure what can be done. As the last two attacks have been performed by american citizens even Trump's plans would fail.

Here's a tip, don't spend all your time there telling people that Islam is fine and that sure such and such is just as bad, it's offensive and insulting and makes you sound like a nutter

It's truly staggering that someone can legally purchase an AR-17 semi-automatic rifle.

The founding fathers of the US constitution did not have this in mind when the 'right to bear arms' was enshrined.

I've given up expecting anything sane, logical or sensible being done about this issue. There doesn't seem to be any atrocity bad enough to warrant a major over hall of gun-ownership legislation in the US.

You're spouting on matters you have poor knowledge on, AR17 was a shotgun, only a few thousand if even were made and still exist, it would actually be a bit of a collectors item only due to its relative rarity for

Now they are having a friendly chat about the ins and outs of Ramadan and how its beneficial

    Jesus wept.

Incredible the power of religion, something that anywhere else in polite society would be considered a mental illness (cos thats exactly what it is), is a cultural and beneficial () event with the religion label.

For what it's worth, I've been doing what most folk are/were doing, following the media and the internet social connects on this story. I got a sudden halt when I realised there were only (pardon the use of that word) 49 victims of the murderer. The official death figure of 50 includes him as well.

The New York Times front page.

Florida Attacker Had Been Investigated for Ties to Terrorism
By LIZETTE ALVAREZ and RICHARD PÉREZ-PEÑA 7:37 AM ET

The gunman who attacked an Orlando, Fla., nightclub early Sunday was identified as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old U.S. citizen.

Forty-nine other people died, 53 were wounded, and the gunman was killed by the police.

An Islamic terrorist organisation releases a kill-list of Florida residents via encrypted channels and calls for lone wolves in Florida to act. A Muslim guy who's been on an FBI terrorism watchlist, and who's father is an open supporter of the Taliban, proceeds to kill people in response. He declares that he's committing this act in allegiance with the Islamic terrorist organisation who have been calling for the attacks. He Allahu Ackbars throughout and martyrs himself at the end. The Islamic terrorist organisation commends his martyrdom and reaffirms that the organisation is responsible for the attack.

    But it's Christians to blame.
Brilliant, it's the same as a battered wife blaming the drink, the people he's hanging around with, the drugs, anything except what the real problem is.
He was doing as his religion has taught him to do. His religion is the problem and it has no place in western society.

Of course I am lecturing you on homophobia! I took issue with you speaking for me and implying i dont have any awareness of homophobia.

Anyway I know that we both think pretty much the same, that it is both terrorist and homophobic and that all religions are crap and we hope they will go away asap.

We are talking about The United States of America.

Home of the Civil Rights movement.

Do you deny the existence of anti LGBTQI legislation in the U.S.?

I find it a bit ironic being accused of whataboutery on this thread by you.

I notice the way your not actually challenging what I am saying about you shoehorning in anti Trans laws into this event because they share an acronym and they suit your political point.

Can't understand where all this hate talk against Ali Salem is coming from.

If ever there was a moderate and integrated Muslim leader in Ireland then it is him.
Dr. Selim, senior member of staff at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland, has been resident in Ireland since 1999 and has played an important role in the Islamic Faith in Ireland and in interfaith dialogue and activity. He submitted his doctoral thesis in the area of Muslim coexistence and its consequences for peace.
He is a champion of dialogue among diverse groups and promotes and encourages understanding among peoples. As a Muslim spokesman in Ireland he has written journalistic articles for the Irish times, the Spectrum and is the editor of Ar-Resalah magazine (see www.islamireland). He has served as a private secretary to the Imam at the Islamic Cultural Centre, Dublin and as the Secretary General of the Irish Council of Imams. His background in Islamic and Faith studies (Bachelor’s degree Al-Azhar University, Egypt; MA in Ecumenics, TCD and PhD TCD) has prepared his academic career as a lecturer on Islam and multiculturalism at the Mater Dei Institute, Dublin (accredited to DCU). Additionally he lectures in Arabic at Trinity College Dublin.
Dr. Selim is a member of the three-faith forum and is involved in many interfaith initiatives organized by Muslim and non-Muslim organizations. He delivers workshops and courses on Islam and Islamic etiquettes to service providers, NGO’s and teachers. He has also promoted mutual understanding through his initiatives on the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism.
He has taught Arabic to a number of Irish politicians and members of the business community.

Seems like some people in this thread hate all Muslims irrespective of their ideology. Full stop.

To be fair, he comes out with some howlers every now again, most recently being the recommendation that RTE broadcast the Muslim call to prayer.

But you're right, as Islamic preachers go he would be a radical freethinker in comparison to someone in the Middle East.

But percentage wise it means we have a bigger problem than the likes of the UK, Belgium and France in that we have a more conservative muslim population for us to have the number of ISIS fighters that we do have. The fact the only reporting done on muslims in Ireland is of the puff piece variety is equally as troubling.

The Clonskeagh mosque allows hate preachers who call for gay people to be killed, has Muslim Brotherhood involvement which a lot of countries have declared a terrorist organisation.

He said non Muslims are killing Muslims in Syria - he named Russia but also Iran, maybe he considers Shia Muslims as not being Muslim given he is a Sunni Muslim, which is where all the worst extremists seem to come from. Both AQ and ISIS are Sunni Islam terrorist groups.

He failed to deal with the problem, it was everyone elses fault and to blame Islam is Islamophobia.

I don't know but those would probably be typical Muslim views which would not be dissimilar to conservative Christian and Orthodox Jewish views.

Is that it. I would've expected you to come up with something far more interesting than that.

    You're clutching at straws mate.

    Promotes sharia.

You might be staggered so to find out that there are AR semi-automatic rifles licenced here. I personally know a few guys that have them. There are other types of semi-automatic rifles licenced here too and we have no problems. It's not the gun, it's the nut behind the trigger.

To be honest, there is no stomach in America to change their constitution. And even if they could change their constitution, each State also has a constitution so they would need to be changed too. It aint happening any time soon.
