The number of Americans on twitter eagerly jumping to the defense of their gun laws is ridiculous. Some of them seem to think that gun control won't help, but praying will. It's baffling :/

People talk about gun control, but the actually reality is that the number of people in the US that carry a gun is very very low. I can imagine that no one in that club was armed, no one near scene was armed, no one within a mile of it was armed except the police. Yea if everyone in that club had a gun that guy would have been stopped fast.

If everyone in the club started firing guns while probably after a lot of drinks, in bad lighting, with limited or no experience of sharp shooting, do you seriously think they'd have done much more than cause further deaths and injuries to bystanders ?!

I can't be the only one equating Trump with Greg Stillson. Potentially the most dangerous man alive.

Islamists on the other hand have made no bones about their contempt for homosexuals, so when I first heard the news it was either lone gun nutter or Islamists. Seems to be the latter at this early stage according to the BBC.

Howld on now. I appreciate that gun violence is a large cause of death in America.
For example, in 2014, almost 11 thousand were killed by one. But let's look at some other statistics from cause of death surveys.

    *Heart disease killed 611 thousand.
    *Cancer killed 584 thousand.
*Chronic lower respiratory diseases killed 150 thousand.
    *Accidents killed 130 thousand.
    *Stroke killed 128 thousand.
    *Alzheimer's disease killed 84 thousand.
    *Diabetes killed 75 thousand.
*Influenza and Pneumonia killed 57 thousand.
    *Kidney diseases killed 47 thousand.
    *Suicides topped 41 thousand.
    *Road fatalities were 36 thousand.

There are - for a supposedly "developed" nation - far more serious problems needing to be dealt with. This just gets all the coverage for some reason ;););)

Actually, tbh, I'm beginning to wonder how the yanks haven't gone extinct!!!

All developed nations have the above. Guns is a separate issue.

If you read the NRA handbook yes.

It aint the guns. Lots of countries have high gun ownership but not the continual mass shootings that the US has.

Now that the news story ends, the anti-/pro-gun debate begins and soon the anti-/pro-muslim people will move in if it is discovered that they were of that religion.

    Pretty much like clockwork.

"Suspected Islamic Extremist" so nothing has been confirmed yet. Not that I would take the daily mails word for it anyway.

Anyway not that it makes a huge difference. Anyone that will take a gun a shoot down a group of unsuspecting people is an extremist and terrorist. Whatever group you claim to represent. Whether Muslims extremists or right wing extremists they are two cheeks of the same arse in my opinion.

To be honest, that's a statement that gets repeated and repeated without any reference to stats.

No country even comes close to the level of gun ownership in the USA nor do very many allow the types of heavy military style weapons that are allowed for hobbyists in some US states.

Even very quick search on Google for stats will show you the differences. It's not exactly difficult to point point out the differences.

In most European countries with relatively higher gun ownership, they're mostly genuine hunting weapons too and you're talking about ownership rates that are leagues lower than the US even in the most heavily armed EU countries.

You've also got a culture that aspects of which glorify gun violence and see shooting as part of national identity and so on. It's a very odd combination of factors that don't exist in almost any other country I can think of.

That being said, I've no idea how you could unwind the current position.

Never hear of gun crime like this from India or China.

It's very naive to think just because you don't hear about something means it doesn't happen. Actually naive isn't quite the word I'm looking for.

In WW2, they were among the unfortunate people marked for the gas chambers.

This may be the case, but no other country comes any near the same ratio of mass shootings. If purely gun ownership was to blame then there should be a direct correlation with the amount of mass shootings with the number of guns in those countries.

RT now reporting the suspect is Omar Mateen? (Not sure of name spelling) an American citizen. Sky News now reporting on Prince Harry's new haircut.

It's the easy availability which is the issue. Doesn't matter if you own one or not, if you go around the bend and feel like shooting a load of people you can get a gun not a bother. How can that be a good thing? Baffles me when certain Irish people defend this insane culture.

Another Islamist terrorist kills at least 20 people in a gay club. An attack on western freedom and values in a no doubt homophobic and religiously motivated attack.

When this story broke the PC brigade on Twitter were claiming this attack was carried out by a southern Christian gun-nut and calling for gun control. Now the same people are calling everybody Islamophobic and vigorously defending this lunatic.

True, although he also attacked black and Bangladeshis communities. Don't get me wrong neo-nazi's are no fiend of the gay community but they spend most of their time targeting ethnic minorities and Jews given the trend of their attacks.

Of course German Nazi's put homosexuals to death but my point was about American neo-Nazi's. Same same but different.

Yeah because everything about gun ownership rules in the USA is totally fine.

Another 'troubled' young male who shunned his new home and all the glorious opportunities afforded to him. Instead he looks to a 1500 year old book for inspiration which offers ridiculous dogma and rules of society which means we would be living back in the dark ages if he had his way.

Its a common theme unfortunately, played out in many countries and we should be right to be worried about the influence of Islam on young male teens.

House representative Peter King now say's he has solid evidence this is a radial Islamic attack and has the shooters name but won't release at this time. The name's up on Twitter for the last 35 minutes. Meanwhile on Sky News the sun has come out to dry Prince William's bald head.

Same thread applies across all of these tracks though : 'troubled' young, male, lashing out as society at large with deadly weapons.

These extremists organisations are tapping that 'resource' by attracting them in.

The common issue is the socially disconnected, unhinged, angry at the world type. Their channels of action just vary from Islamic extremism, Christan fundamentalism, xenophobia, homophobia or just plain lashing out at schools and stuff without very much explanation of their motives at all in a lot cases.

Has to be the same physiological issue though.
