Best Chinese Take Away in South Dublin?

    lo all,

I'm on the hunt for an excellent chinese take way. Not one of these places that fills you with monosodium glutamate , but somewhere that buys in fresh ingredients, cooks 'em and delivers great meals straight to your door. :)

I already rejoice in the fact that the Bombay Pantry in Rathmines is 5 minutes from my place, they're an Indian take away with a limited menu, I think the only take away indian, (or anything!), in the Bridgestone Restaurant Guide in Dublin.

For me, one of the signs of an excellent take away menu is one which specialises in a small selection of dishes, not one that has 100 different main course dishes!

So, if you know of excellent chinese take aways around South Dublin, or even in your area, post up details here. :)

    Luc

You should try Kesar Foods for an Indian Takeaway in Rathmines. Its a basement on Upper Rathmines Road. Usually takes a little time for the food to be ready but its worth the wait I tells ya.

Not too sure about chinese takeaways now but my two top chinese restaurants would be china sichuan in Stillorgan and good world in town.

All this talk of food has made me hungry!!

Hey, yea I did try them one night, it did take a while, which they said on their menu, so I didn;t mind that, and the old man (he must have been 70!), who delivered to food practically kneeled and called me 'Sire' as he handed me the food, I was shocked-n-stunned.

As for the food itself, sure, it was nice enough, but reminded me of a spicy stew or something.

Also, I would like a surprise tour of their kitchens in that basement. Never been, but would love to take a walk thru out of pure curiousity.

Micro - HO-HOS? YOU have to be joking, I said QUALITY FOOD! and SMALL SPECIALISED MENUS! Ho-Ho's do everything under the sun, in fact, it's a bad food experience from Ho-Ho's that has me looking for a decent Chinese take away! :)

Indian Delivery place has got to to be Naz/The Balti House....I think im well equipped to give ya a guide on good indian places nyom nyom

Langkawi, 46 Upper Baggot St Dublin 2

    Indonesian/Malaysian/Indian

Not quite a 'take-away' (you eat in there) but worth mentioning because it's a great restaurant. Menu items include spicy curries or dishes like beef in a spiced coconut sauce, all of which are delicious. I'd highly recommend it.

I didn't start this thread as a restaurant guide thread, its a take away recommendation thread.

Let's take it for granted that Hussey asked an off-topic question and Bard kindof answered it. Hussey, for a chinese place, try Good World Georges Street, they're great, especially on Sunday afternoons for lunch, Dim Sum, Mmmmm!

If you want 'eat in' place recommendations, then please start another thread lads. :)

    Thanks

I live next to a restaurant that is meant to be gorgeous but I'm not sure if they do take-aways. 120 Pembroke road I think it is.

Best chinese I've eaten in dublin!

Ayumiya on newtownpark avenue (may it R.I.P) was the tastiest japanese I'd eaten too.

Sichuan on lower kilmacud road used to do take away but they don't anymore :(

unless your a regular customer there and want a take away once in a blue moon (such as my folks)

Hmm.. I would recommend Kambo in Ballybrack village.. Having eaten in the two Chinese restaurants/takeaways in Shankill, I would happily drive three miles past them to Kambo, to get a much tastier Chinese. Try it, if you haven't..

    Heresy!!!

It truly is the finest takeaway in all of Christendom or perhaps Hindudom.

Try the Bengal Prawn curry with a portion of Raita. It's truly phenomenal.

Anyways best chinese takeaway I've uses is on the northside. Chess just off the northcircular. Probably not any good to you I don't think they deliver beyond the northside.

If money isn't too much of an object there's a company that will deliver restaurant food to you - they have a deal with a load of good restaurants in Dublin and get takeout restaurant food for a bit less than full price and bring it to you.

I can't quite remember their name maybe someone else remember's it. I have a guide somewheres I'll try and fish it out.

only real place i order chinese from is the Jade House on sundrive road/kimmage..

as for takeaways, im a fond lover of the alpha grill chippie down on harolds cross road :D

best take away is golden carp , dundrum

Hi S10 - Is the Golder Crap still doing takeaways? I thought that they had dropped this since they re-opened under new management. They also weren't taking credit cards, which seems crazy for any restaurant these days.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,476 ✭✭✭Samba

best restaurant , is the china sichuan resturant in stillorgan, a must see real sichuan chefs ,

Actually they do still do takeaways, but they won't deliver and you will have to collect and pay restaurant prices (and it is damn pricy in there)

but i have to say best Chinese restaurant in Dublin without a shadow of a doubt.

I worked there for almost a year and the kitchens are very clean, all the ingredients are fresh, the staff are very pleasant, service is fast, but at the same time you are not rushed into leaving.

As an employee you get dinner when you arrive in at 5 (you eat what the chefs eat) then at 10 an hour or two before going home, they cook you up another meal!.

Although, v.hard to get a job in, worth going down and chancing your arm, they pay v.well and treat you with alot of respect. But usually only hire people of Chinese origins.

Otherwise, it used to be good but last meal I got was crap, probably because the owner does not actually chef there anymore himself, ex-owner of a well know restaurant in Dunlaoghaire which closed down, cant think of the name.

But, they do some Thai and Vietnamese Dishes, there is one Pork and Peanut one which they do which is MMM Mmmmm.

How about a Worst thread aswell? :)

Hey, I know this is an old thread, but it's an important one as I've found it more than once whilst searching for takeaways...

Got to big up my realatively new local called 'TAK TAI' on Clanbrassil St (know that lil group of 4 takeaways on their own?) ...they're Thai/Asian and they're really big on flavour with none of the gloop. No cornstarch in any of their dishes me thinks, and that's a wonderful thing :)

Definite Thai buzz to their food... lots of heat, great masaman, my fav meal is called Pad-Prik (chilli garlic lime fish sauce & cashew nuts), pick your meal then pick your meat/tofu/veg to go with it. They're nice in there with genuine smiles, decent english and their delivery guy is sound too.

These guys stand out amongst the lazy, gloupy chineses that flood this part of town.

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

    - the only duf thing i've had from them is the tempura prawns - 1st, it wasn't proper tempura batter, 2nd it was soft and gaky... just doesn't travel

....my favourite Indian, KONKAN (Restaurant/take away) on Clanbrassil St Upper (near harold's cross bridge)

These guys make their own yogurt fresh every day and it's got that natural sweet flavour that only lasts a day... amazing. Food is nearly impossible to fault. Lamb is ALWAYS tender, and that's saying something. They always give you papadams, mango and mint yogurt with your order but they are a bit pricier than the rest. Well worth it though.. can't emphasise that enough (we usually have enough for a 2nd round the following day)

Between these guys and Tak-Tai mentioned above, Dublin 8 has been saved in my opinion.

Anyone got a recommendation for a good Chinese takeaway in south Dublin.Thanks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,579 ✭✭✭jimi_t

Not quite chinese, more thai/vietnamese but with some sweet and sour stuff etc... on the menu and pretty damn excellent is Diep@Home delivering out of Ranelagh/Blackrock.

    http://www.diep.net/?/athome/menu/

The Bamboo in Ranelagh is a bit of a 70s throwback but very good quality meat and very reasonable. Miles ahead of anything in Rathmines.

    http://www.ratemyarea.com/places/the-bamboo-chinese-ta-12417

Also, saw a lot of nonsense about 'the best chinese restaurant in Dublin' above. It's a toss-up between Wongs in Ranelagh, Kites in Ballsbridge or 'The Good World' on Georges street depending on regional style/price range.

EScent in Ballinteer (beside the Coach House) does very nice Thai stuff. The sit-down prices were crazy expensive, but the take-away or delivery was fairly reasonable.

Take Away is the Oriental Express in Monkstown and the Good World if you want a resturant.

I would recommend Amerta Chinese Restaurant in Monkstown or China Schucan in Sandyford (used to be Stillorgan)

It has been recommended on this board a number of times, but here's one more: Hilan on Capel Street is a very good authentic restaurant, that won't give you the 'Irish-Chinese' dining experience, that is so common from many Chinese restaurants the length and breadth of the country. Very reasonable too.

It is simply the best. Real authentic food with no compromise for the bland Irish palette. Excellent and the staff are so so nice and friendly.

We took a gamble last Sunday and went to the new Chinese/Malaysian restaurant where Jade Garden (or was it Jade Palace) used to be. We walked out regretting it - bland white gloopy sauce - a throwback to the horrible old days of Chinese food in Ireland.

It's hard to beat the Hilan - or the Fortuna Sichuan on Parnell Street.

    Anybody tried Gong.
It is supposed to have a chef and staff from the Szechuan that moved to Sandyford.
As for Wongs, the waiting staff seem more intent on topping up your wine:confused: than bringing your food.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 551 ✭✭✭Todd Gack

Tried Gong shortly after it opened. Staff were very friendly, attentive and welcoming. My main was only ok, but that was more down to a bad choice on my part. Starter was nice enough if I remember correctly. Worth a look I would say, I'm planning a return visit myself.

On a side note eScent in Ballinteer is awful, the worst dining experience I've had in Dublin I would say. Very pricey and the most bland tasteless Thai red curry I've ever had. It really did taste like nothing.

Tried this place recently, as a lover of authentic chinese food i have to say i was a little disapointed, it wasnt bad or anything but it just wasnt anyting special, they use to much salt also.
I can cook a better Ma Po Tofu and Tung Choi in preserved bean curd and im not chinese.

I was so disappointed to see the Bamboo had closed. I had my very first Chinese meal from there way back in 1974 and I became a firm fan. Went there last Sept and it was as good as ever. Haven't been able to patronise it as much since I moved but I would always go back a few times a year for their spring rolls alone - mmmmmmm.

Thought it would last for ever. Anyone know where the people who ran it have gone? They were good.

    :(

Recommendations from first-time posters will be treated with suspicion, Mr Anise.

IMHO, the food there is nice but very over-priced. Their take-away prices are decent.

Well the Bamboo has reopened (June 2011) under the cunningly original name "The New Bamboo". Have tried it once and it seems to be just as good but you would need to check it out yourself. Sometimes when places like this open up, they are brilliant for a few months and then there is a deterioration. Remains to be seen.
