    Bandicoot Promotions Presents

    Date: Fri *24th Sept 2004
Venue: *Pine Lodge, Myrtleville, Co. Cork, Ireland.

Headline act: STRAFRAENN HAKON (WITH BAND)

    Support: Dialect *
    Price: Free Adm
    Doors: 9pm
    Ph 021 4832171
    Over 18's

Stafraenn Hákon (it translates as “Digital Hakon”) is the alter-ego outfit of "Olafur Josephsson" a musical artist from Reykjavík, Iceland. Stafraenn Hakon works in the anything-goes world of post-rock, a domain usually reserved for collectives showing off their musical virtuosity or flooring listeners with their Blakean marriages of Heaven and Hell.

The dense atmospherics of other bands from Josephsson’s native Iceland, like Múm and Sigur Ros, are obvious points of reference, but those comparisons have their limits. Josephsson’s work – while not exactly minimal – boasts substantially less ornamentation than either of those acts.

His back catologue has recently been picked up by Resonant Records and a small US label called Secret Eye Records.

Resonant Records is currently working on re-releasing a number of Josephsson’s previous albums; he’s enjoyed a modest amount of exposure since partnering with the label, opening for Godspeed You! Black Emperor in Iceland and having one song included on The Wire’s tenth Wire Tapper compilation cd.

    Date:Sat 25th Sept 2004
Venue: The Lobby Bar, Union Quay, Cork, Ireland.

    Headline act: POLYSICS

    Support: TBC
    Price: 10 euro
    Doors: 9pm
    Ph 021 4311113
Tickets on sale from Lobby Bar
    Over 18's

Polysics, four mysterious characters that are half animal, half machine and were transported back through time from Neo Tokyo whilst making music that flattens cities, drains oceans and splits atoms. So powerful is their music that on hearing it, normal people have been known to believe that the earth has moved (merely the sonic attack which is Polysics has shaken the earth from it’s elliptical orbit causing fissures in time and space).

This daring unit of four: Hayashi (Guitar, Voice, Programming), Yano (Drums), Kayo (Synthesiser, Vocoder, Voice) and Fumi (Bass, Voice, Synthesiser), the spiritual sons and daughters of Devo, forge their riveting music using conventional rock instruments, augmented by synthesiser, vocoder, and computer programming.

Polysics claim their intentions are simply to create new music by unifying ‘inflectional electronic sound that sticks and repeats itself in one’s head’ along with ‘ultimately distorted guitar noise’. By default or design, the outcome of this fusion is enormously compelling. Music with the power to stop time…. then start it again in fast-forward.

Great news! I can't wait to see them. "Polysics or Die" is one of my favourite albums right now.

    Some info on Dialect:

Dialect is a he. Dialect was born only 18 years ago, and celebrates his musical 1st birthday soon. Dialect was discovered in the midst of various computer programs, keyboards and guitars. Dialect is inspired by Ulrich Schnauss, Joy Division, Bola, Mogwai, Mum, Sigur Ros, Telefon Tel Aviv and GY!BE. The idea behind Dialect is to make post-rock using live instruments (drums, guitar, bass, violin, piano) and to merge it with programming and sequencing.

    1. Where's Me Culture? Big Party

Where's Me Culture? the group formed in recent weeks to offer an alternative forum for cultural events in 2005, announces its first event for 2005, a major party to take place on January 8th, the night of the official launch of Cork2005.
Since its first meeting just two weeks ago, the group has garnered huge support from a cross section of not only the artistic community, but of citizens of Cork, to whom Where's Me Culture? believe the year belongs.
The Where's Me Culture? Party takes place on Saturday January 8th at The Mardyke entertainment complex and will showcase the best of Cork's bands, DJ's, performers, artists, comedians and all shades in between. This unique venue will cater perfectly for such a diverse event, which will see simultaneous performances in different rooms; a truly celebratory showcase of Cork talent.

Saturday 8th January, also the opening day of official Cork 2005 celebrations, was chosen as a way of extending the celebrations into the night (the official celebrations end at 8.30pm!) and of offering an alternative to the many people interested in Cork 2005 who would like to be involved and included in this celebratory year.
Tickets for the event are 10 euros and are on now on sale from Plug'd Records and Kino Cinema, both on Washington St. All performers are donating their services free and all proceeds are going to the WMC? Fund.

    Bandicoot Promotions
IN CONJUNCTION WITH AN BROG AND GUINNESS

    Date: Wed 2nd March 2005
Venue: An Brog, Oliver Plunkett St, Cork, Ireland.

    Headline act: THE CHALETS

    Support: M.J Hibbett
    Price: NO COVER CHARGE
    Doors: 9.30pm
    Over 18's

The Chalets have been causing quite a stir on the live scene, winning rave reviews and a considerable amount of fans along the way. The line-up consists of 2 girls (Pee Pee and Pony), 2 boys (Chris and Enda) and a drummer (Dilbot). Together they make infectiously catchy songs which offer a new angle on indie pop.

Things have been very busy with their first single on Nasty Pop Records being used by MTV Ireland in their "Hairstyles" sting campaign along with weird and wonderful gigs with The Shins, BellX1, The Trachtenberg Family Slideshow Players, Detroit Cobras, Mylo and a slot on the Ticket stage at Oxegen.

The band are currently in training at the local gym in an attempt to get fit before they embark on a rather busy schedule of UK gigs with Art Brut as well as particapating in the Camden Crawl Festival.

The Chalets are also set to release their debut album in the coming months on Nasty Pop/Setanta Records.
