Bonkey talks sense. They have to check their contract. If the contract states that Leigh had to pay the whole rent, ie he was sub-letting the apartment, then unpaid monies are none of your business, but then seeing as he's gone, you might have no legs to stand on. There's too may permutations to go into here. But if you have no contract, then technically you have no comeback. Short of bringing him to court, you'll probably have to write off the €1940 you've given him. I'm baffled as to why he was given money a second time after stealing it?

Pay by direct debit or standing order in future.

    :)

If the house mates don't have a contract with the landlord (and are effectively "paying guests"), they owe him nothing ("Privity of Contract").

The remaining tenants can simply refuse to apy his share each month, and tell the landlord that they would like him/her to lodge an official complain with the gardai about it. Then it becomes a legal matter.

This would appear to be a civil as opposed to ccriminal matter. Generally, the Gardaí will not get involved in such disputes unless there is a specific 'stealing' (as opposed to misappropriating) of money.

When the house mates sort it out with the landlord, make sure they each get a "Form Rent 2" from the landlord - available from the Revenue Commissioners www.revenue.ie

Could the people renting the apartment not try the Vincent de Paul for a hardship grant or something or even the college hardship fund explain that the money they had entrusted to the person responsible for paying the rent was stlen

I know it might seem like a farfetched idea but it is worth a try

might also consider asking the landlord if he will accept an offer where they can pay the debt in installments on top of the rent which will be paid regularly by a more reliable member of the group
maybe a good spell locked up might knock some sense into him...

    that doesnt work

I'm living 120 miles from dublin and the discription that bomb gave of this person sounds 100 percent like someone I know.

This bloke seems like a totally self centered ass. He didn't even need that money he only stole it because he could. NO one needs m8s like that.
