When you were about 6 or 7, did this happen to you?

Hey,

I'm 27, so this would be about 20 years ago.

I was in a mixed school. We were all brought into a room and told to strip to our underwear. We were weighed, we had to hop on one leg, and the females nurses/whatever put their hand in your underwear and fondled you for about 2 seconds and then wrote something into a book lol

Now, I'm not at all talking about abuse or something here (I know it wasn't abuse) but I sometimes wonder, what the **** was this????

Did anyone else have to do this?
What the **** were these tests all about??

I do distinctly remember my pee nuts bein cupped by a total stranger while the rest of the class stood in single file outside the door.I cant remember if it was a man or a woman but they made me cough,twice...

It was totally out of the blue. I was just happy we didn't have to do anything for the whole day.

I remember it because the women laughed at ME when she did it! I thought this strange at the time, but when I think about it now, I must have had a stiffy or something (although I doubt I did!!)

They were prob checking to see if our testicles had dropped...?

I also remember, because my of surname, I was the last person in my class. During the ball testing the all female class in the year ahead of me came in and started stripping off. I was wearing my Thomas the Tank Engine underwear. Twas very embarrassing!

Yeah i remember this happened at least twice.
I have an enduring memory of walking into the room and seeing a friend of mine in his vest and y-fronts being weighed or measured.

I'd guess we would have been about 7-8 maybe 9.

I remember some of my friends saying they'd been touched down below, but i never was.
Only ever had a sight exam.

I was tall for my age so i guess that's why i was never measured or weighed.

Don't think we were ever even told what it was for?

Although my friend did have a note sent to his parents to say that they thought he was under weight for his age.

Sounds a bit odd. I don't think this ever happened to me but then again I have enough difficulty remembering what I did yesterday, never mind 15 years ago

They were / are public health exams. Mass screenings for childhood conditions.

Of course why couldn't they (a) have it done in a warm room (b) with relative privacy (c) with the doctor asking can he touch you first.

And why if the girls were allowed keep their vests on wasn't I? Freezin'!

This definatley happend to me and at that age too. I was also in a mixed school. What was different was they looked at me knob.

Well- I'm 31 and I don't remember this ever happening.
They did test our hearing and our eyesight at least 3 times- along with reflexes and random questions about homelife, but we were not subjected to an exam of that nature. They also brought in a dentist to check our teeth (would have been about 3rd or 4th class). A lot of my class feigned bad eyesight hoping to delay having to return to whatever class we were missing (we were tested in groups of 4)- but it was not to be, followups were at the local health clinic (outside of school hours.....)

Can't say they were too strict with their testing either- one guy in my class who is now registered blind was told he could probably get away with sitting up at the top of the class and not getting glasses. It didn't endear him to the rest of his classmates!

Otherwise, all I can say is — nowadays! — a person would have to have serious reasons for conducting a check like this. You are — again, nowadays! — more than entitled to ask them what it's for... So don't be shy! :rolleyes:

I too am 27 and this happened to me when I was in school, i think in senior infants so I was probably about 6

it's a perfectly justifiable check for undescended testicles, which , if left unnoticed would lead to much much higher risk of testicular cancer (if the testicle is left up in the abdomen and not brought down into the scrotum by a surgical procedure) and also infertility

I can see why people might have a problem with it without knowing this fact, not sure what they're doing nowadays though, probably still doing the same thing

I had this test when I was about that age, certainly seemed a bit odd to me at the time.

I am 30 and I remember it happening as clear as day when I read the original posting. We were yanked from class, lined up and one at a time and sent into a room where a nurse did the deed. No warning, no discussion. I think I was more like 8 or 9 though for mine. One of the reasons I remember it was because there was no laughing and joking about it. We barely made eye contact with each other leaving the room. Ah the fond memories of primary school.

I can remember this happening, but I also remember being given a note to take home to our parents about 2 weeks beforehand. Both our teacher and principle talked to us about it, as did my parents. I also think parents were given the option to be there if they wanted. (This would have been 20 years ago, but it was a pretty progressive school.)

I can't believe this was done without parental knowledge. At the very least your mum would have been upset that you weren't wearing your best underwear!
