Im most excitited over the possibilty of using a lightsaber / sword. Yes folks we're all gonna look like idiots - and proud of it!

At first i wasnt too sure of the design, but thats how everyone reacts when they see something new, now, the possibilities, its not just about which console has the most power anymore...

Now noone can call me an idiot when i move the controller in the direction i want to go,
i still havent got over that "move controller in direction u want to go" complex ;)

I just wanna play a stab zombie game. No plot or story. Just a game where you get to stab lots of zombies. That'd be great fun. :)

May that video never be seen outside of Japan. You know the japanese are up for new ideas, no matter how stupid they look doing it. Im quite looking forward to the revolution, especially with the controller and backwards compatability. But if a western audience sees that video.........

    http://media.cube.ign.com/articles/651/651383/vids_1.html

First Thought: THAT'S NOT A GAME CONTROLLER!!! THAT'S A TV REMOTE!

second thought: What's going on!? Wait....IT IS!!!! :)

That's the IGN video of the keynote speech. Yeah, the opening video is definately...different. The idea of being able to the Pointer in, say, a new Zelda game to control a sword would be cool.

The best application seems to be in 1st person shooters. There's a video somewhere of a guy from nintendo using it to play Metriod Echoes. Amazing.

I'm still a bit scared and confused at the moment though...

Don't like the initial look of the thing. I'm sure it'll get tweaked a bit and sexed up like a British Iraq Weapons Report but I tell ya, you gotta give it to Nintendo: They're not afraid to put their balls to the wall. I like the look of the thumb controller, the fact that it's on a cable connected to the other part. Could be very comfortable. Also, like syth said... Just a Zombie Stabbing game. Just Zombies lining up fer a good old stabbin'...... Oh, and think of all those kind of whack-a-mole games..... After a few pints with mates? Bit worried about the robustness of it though.... And 3rd party controllers are gonna be expensive I'd say

It's legendary. I'm not a Nintendo lad (nothing since the snes has captured my fancy in any way). I love this and it'll love me :)

The initial look i though, hmmm so whats so revolutionary about this? Then I watched the video demoing it and thought. WOW I want it. MS and Sony have played a safe game of pimp my console. Ninty doing what they do best (come up with teh ideas in the first place) have really gone a different direction and come up with something revolutionary.

The Rev out of the 3 consoles has held my interest the longest and now I just cannot see whats so appealing about the 360 or PS3 when you could have this baby.

Its not real as such. Its an impression from ign.com of what they expect the plug in "normal" controller to look like. Its probably not far off though.

After seeing that video I have only one option.
I must get a folding chair, a sleeping bag and a toothbrush and camp outide my local game store till 2006. Still , I may have to abstain from eating, drinking ,socialising and just about everything else during the time but it'll be worth it.

And you think I'm being sarcastic?

Edit : I have been away for a while , when did retro take infinis mods?

About 3 weeks ago. Infini hasn't the time to moderate anymore and suggested me to be a moderator. Bless him, he obviously didn't realise he set the ball rolling for my plan of world conquest.

I have to say, on first look I'm not that impressed. It's basically a remote control. The shape looks like it will be Awkward to use.
According to the article, it was quite good to use so I could be wrong.

After seeing the video and how it will be used it seems a lot better than my initial thoughts. But I can't see many third party developers supporting this especially the ones that will release multi format games, and that will pretty much decide how successful it is. I'm sure most Nintendo games will use it but it could be an utter flop unless they manage to get more developers to support it.
Plus the demos that the media were allowed to use at the tokyo game show were just proof of concept demos. They need to start showing videos of real games using it.

    completely dissapointed...

i really really really cant think of one way that this will turn out good...
i just cant see how this controller is going to be useable in anything besides arcade games with no real depth.
another thing, i dont see how you could get good at it, my point being i like being the best at super smash bros melee and multi player games im good at where i can just completely smother other ppl in their own fecal matter because i know all the combos and know the controls perfectly, but with this having what...5 buttons? anyone could just pick the thing up play know everything be unsatisfied and still be the best.

i just dont like the fact that the controls for every game are going to be basically the same

besides the use of arcade games with no depth i really dont think its goin to be a hit

    please Nintendo prove me wrong!

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭Goodshape

Have you actually read the articles about this thing? Seen the video?

I'm not even sure what you mean by 'arcade games with no depth', but both arcade games and the gameplay made possible with this controller would seem to allow for plenty of depth.

Also, a new SMBM game has been more or less confirmed for the Rev.

srry for dbl posting but i just saw this and wanted to show it this is what i saw after i posted the above comment...

this is what Mr. Miyamoto had to say about it

"We want a system that takes advantage of new technology for something that anyone, regardless of age or gender, can pick up and play. [Something with a] gameplay style that people who have never played games can pick up and not be intimidated by. We wanted a controller that somebody's mother will look at and not be afraid of."

that is exactly what i dont want. im a nintendo fan and i have both a ps2 fan freind and an xbox fan friend and they can both whip the **** out of me on their fav consoles games like halo and killzone and NFS and games like that, and i had nothing to really back myself up on because, really what did GC bring to the table? and now when im playing my revo and theyve got theirs i wont be much competition to them on the revolution controller since its so damn simple.

i think some of the best features of video gamin is the joy of trying and trying and trying new things until u nail it down and u really feel like u accomplished something, most people havent done before, and now theres nothing to conqure...

edit: u posted when i was typing. and id like to respond now... ok i guess they may be able to pull some stuff off and yes i did see the video but i just cant believe u can do alot with 5 buttons i hope they prove me wrong

Yea, but it's not just five buttons; it's five buttons and full 3D movement.

Seriously, think of something like SSBM -- instead of hammering away on buttons to pull of a move, you'll be tilting to the left a bit, over to the right, lift up, thrust forward, aim at opponent, pull trigger... the possible combinations are countless - tilt the wrong way or at the wrong speed and you've messed it all up.

Plenty of 'new things' to try and try again.

And at the same time for games and gamers that simply don't want or need that level of frantic action it'll work great. Like a mouse only better. Which I think is what Miyamoto was on about.

Anyway.. who knows tbh, but I wouldn't write this thing off so soon. Looks bloody ace to me.

eh, have you been playing games for the last 10 years or are you a new commer?

the controls for every game already and all systems are basically the same. car games, x to go, o to break and dir pad to steer etc... xbox its right trigger to go left one to break. its allways the same hence why so many games sell and be sucessfull. if you had to learn a complete new controlling system every time your head woudl be wrecked. its been the same for 20 odd years!!!

u dont get my point im not comparing need for speed games to other need for spped games or zelda to zelda im saying that the whole movement thing is going to be the same for everything

oh and btw i dont think im considered a "new comer" since i have a feeling im probably the oldest on this board as sadly as that sounds...

Isn't that very similar to saying that the whole pushing buttons thing is the same for everything?

Getting back to the mouse analogy - because its an easy one tbh - I use my mouse in FPS games to look around the place and shoot at things. I use it in startagy games to select units or access a menu or scroll to a different part of the map. Point being the device is the same but the functionality is quite different.

I honestly think that the Rev' controller will offer far more 'ways of playing' than we are currently getting from the analog stick and buttons joypads.

Insults like that make you sound an awful lot younger.

It will be possible to do games that arent just arcade type games on the new controller

A Metroid game would be possible on the new controler , all it takes is a bit of ingenuity. In Metroid Prime you use the d-pad and the C-stick to choose between Visor and different beams. All you need is 1 button to cycle through each. The D-pad is perfect for scrolling through weapons and visors. Eg - use up on the D-pad to cycle through beams , use down on the d-pad to cycle through visors. Weapon select in gmaes like Timesplitters2 already do this

Since Ball mode isnt used much it could be set to Right on the D-Pad or onto the small X or Y button on the end of the pad. The 3d map could be put on the Left on the D-pad or on 1 of the X or Y buttons

Lock on isnt needed with the new pointer interface.
A is obviously used to shoot your beam and B on the other side used for missle.

On the nunchuk part Z1 could be used to jump.
The Z2 could be for Scanning

See - you can go to lots of buttons used to very little buttons used.
Heck jump could be hust performed by moving the pointer upwards ,forgetting about a jump button altogether

First person shooters would be simple to do on this new controller.
In Halo 2 for example there are 3 main action buttons , Fire weapon 1 ,fire weapon 2 and Melee attack.
Most shooters just have 1 fire button which means freeing up 1 button for something else .
All other buttons are weapon select type like toggle grenade , toggle gun , sniper scope (X or Y could be used for Revo). The need for the white and blaclk buttons is removed for Revolution if u bind weapon / grenade to the d-pad. B would be used to fire

Platformers are the same , games like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario sunshine and Banjo Kazooie/Tooie use 3 buttons Jump , Attack , crouch for SM64 and BK , jump ,attack, spray for Sunshine. The rest are just camera options and in Sunshines case nozzle select.

My ideal set up would be :
    A - jump
    B- Crouch
    Z1-attack
    Z2- Extra button

Z2 could be used as a "Shift button"
For exampe holding Z2 adds another 3 buttons by holding it and pressing A,B or Z1. Yhis is perfect for games like BK where Kazzooie is used to do extra moves.

The controler is also useful for RTS games which no one could call arcadey.
