Lad, we're talking about getting randomly attacked in the street. Love to know how to avoid that random bit.
First off I am not a lad and I also dislike bud, mate etc ... They are used to be derogetory too often.
Random attacks tend to happen less often in place where there are lots of people. Your right you can't avoid all but you can limit exposure. Don't walk down dark alley's etc...There are people here basically saying they wouldn't avoid trouble because they "aren't going to be scared off by scum". We are also talking about random attacks that are being videoed so more than one person is involved.
Some people don't realise watching a Jackie Chan movie doesn't mean you can fight like him. One guy the same size as you can kick your ass and two can do it a lot easier. That's not even considering weapons. I remeber when I was a teen a number of people carried knives. I was stabed in the shoulder with a screw driver too for being in the wrong place. I wonder how many of the tuff boys here have actually been stabbed

    MorningStar,

You are correct in saying that in most cases you can avoid seemingly random attacks by taking precautions such as the ones you've mentioned, like avoiding dark alleys or not walking through a gang of youths. The problem with the Happy Slapping phenomenom, if I understand it correctly, is that these incidents occur in places you wouldn't expect them to, like main streets or shopping malls and are done by people who seem to be walking past you before suddenly hitting you.

As to the original question, I know myself and how I would react , and if I was randomly attacked in public my reaction would be to incapacite the attacker so I could GTF out of Dodge safely. I wouldn't be thinking about the rights or wrongs of the situation but rather how to get that fcuker down fast so I could leave and I doubt there would be a judge in the land who could fault you for that.

I actually heard recently that a man was set on fire and video taped on a mobile phone, where is it going to stop? the man suffered 2nd degree burns all over his body...

As for the ones who say i would smack'em back you cant because 9/10 times it is unexpected and when you do realise what has happend they are half way down the road! so what can you do about it?

True but I think a lot of us are working under the assumption that they are staying in the vacinity for the benefit of the camera though. If that's not the case then reactions may vary.

Reasonable force is what a reasonable man would do, as determined by a jury.

Slap happy attacks are very unlikely to happen any place where security or any other person could get involved and stop their fun. It tends to be done in surprise attacks on the streets most of the time. True they can't be avoid in all cases. A lot of the "slaps" are water pistols, eggs etc...

A judge will not look at it favourably if a 30 year old man hitting a 15 year old for throwing a water ballon or an egg. Even if he slaps you and you hit him you are an adult and he is not. Also bear in mind that if you hit somepersons child they might get a little annoyed and violent.

It's tricky that's all and the attitude of hit them back has very few beniftis to it other than self satisfaction. I personally will avoid the simple violent approach where possible. Some people think that is a cowards way but I don't care I carry nothing worth my life or theirs.
