Ah well, if on "dad's knee" counts, mine was a Porsche 356 Coupe SC. Bought in tatters for pennies back in '77 or '78, restored/resprayed in Frog Green then resold a year later for more pennies ( - and no, I've still not forgiven my dad over that one, nor let him forget).

Anyway I recall those foot pedals for the washers. My ol' man had a new Capri 2000GT back in 1971 and it had a similar set up, a rubber ball for squirting with a metal ring around it for wiping. I actually thgought my father was magic for years as he could make the wipers work by clicking his fingers !! :D
Me too! My dad had a loan of a MKII Cortina for a while that had this foot-operated washer, and we thought he could do magic!

First car steered was my grandfatehr's Riley Elf, him doing the pedals as I steered the car into his garage while sitting in his lap (aged about three or four).

Not sure about the first car I actually drove, it was probably a Fiat Panda which belonged to my friend's sister when I was about 15 or 16. The car I learned to drive in was my old man's 84 Sierra, which was a 2.0L with a bit of umph when you're 17. First car I got out in on my own was my mum's Mini 1000 around the same time. Loved the car, even though I took many years off its life, although not as many as the rust that literally ate holes in the doors.

First car I owned was a Citroen AX GT, nice starter car and a flyer to boot. I've driven various flavours of CRX since.

71 mk1 escort . My dads old banger that he gave to me on my 17th birtday when he got himself a Princess (he still mantains the princess was a fine looking car!)
Anyway first time out in the car with dad teaching me th rudiments. All went well until my foot slipped off the clutch doing a left turn at crossroads. Car lept forward, I panicked and accelerated instead of braking. Car continued turning left across the verge and into iron railings. I still have this memory of my dad sitting in the passenger seat slapping his head saying f*uck,f*uck,f*ck!

1981 1.3 Opel kadett aged about twelve I guess

steered on dads knee on the beach at maybe five or so in a renault 18 estate

tried a david brown, 780 I think, at ten, but the clutch control was a major issue, still is in that old lump

semi-related..... my mates three year old cousin crashed a carina a few weeks ago, got up early, used a brush to get down the keys and hopped in, got to the end of the yard and kinda bounced off the wall and left it there
