First car I ever drove in a field was a Ford Cortina Mk5. It was the "cashel" special edition. Think it had the 2.0 litre engine, either that or the 1.6. It was in bits but I got good "go" out of it :D

I also drove a Corolla KE30 in the field.

First car I ever drove legally on a public road was a Renault Clio 1.2

Ah the Cashel, was it as green as 10-10-20 grass? :)

Wasn't it one of the first cars to have 'wraparound' lights - where the indicators were visible from the side of the car.

Nah, it was a bronzey gold colour. Although the one I drove had had plenty of green moss and mould growing on it :)

The first car I drove on public roads was an Audi A4 Cabriolet 3.0, silver with a blue roof, I had just fitted the reg plates to it and was driving it to the showroom where it's new owner was collecting it 10 minutes later

First car steered....grandfathers classic 1963 SIII Bentley when I was aged 5. He worked the gears and pedals while I stood on the seat and steered.

    First driven.... VW Jetta :-(

1968 Fort Escort MKIII (maritime blue!).. Had less than 24k on the clock!
Was used by my grandad to travel one mile into town every day, to pick up the newspaper.

T'was a funny car. Had an extra pedal to the left of the clutch, for spraying the windscreen. Took me a while to figure out that four pedals in a maual car wasn't the standard format..

.............I'll take that cigar thanks ! Drove one when I was about 10 on a farm in Donegal. Had the hand throttle and independent brakes !
1968 Fort Escort MKIII (maritime blue!).. Had less than 24k on the clock!

..........dont you mean a MkI Escort ? The MkIII cam out in 1980 !

Anyway I recall those foot pedals for the washers. My ol' man had a new Capri 2000GT back in 1971 and it had a similar set up, a rubber ball for squirting with a metal ring around it for wiping. I actually thgought my father was magic for years as he could make the wipers work by clicking his fingers !! :D

I piloted the same car up and down our street for a few years after than sitting on the ol' mans knee !

I used to reverse my mums 1969 Mini 850 out our driveway, first started to just roll it and steer it then I got brave and started it and used the clutch and gears after a while. That was when I was 9 !

First car I ever drove myself up through the gears was my mums brand new 1981 Fiesta Festival 957cc. I used to sneak out in it anytime they went out when I was about 15 and drive around the estate eventually getting brave and venturing onto the main road, never thought about insurance ! She still had this car in 1989 and when i passed my test in '87 I used this car all the time as she took the train to work.......so I drove to school ! :D

When I was suppossed to be studying for the leaving cert I was down Dollymount pulling handbrakers or trying to get airborne on the back roads of Malahide. Needless to say I ruined the engine overevving it so when I finished the leaving I started working in a local'ish garage and my first project with my first wage packet was to pull the engine. I rebuilt it totally for the princely sum of £175 quid !! Drove it for another few years then it was sold to my cousin and then her friend !

Bought an old 77 Mk4 Cortina in about 1987 too, never made it to the road but I had fun stripping bits off it, eventually selling it to the knackers who took it away !

First car I ever owned, insured and drove on the road was a1978 Escort 1600 Sport Mk2. It was a POS but I had fun till bits fell off and I got sick of it. Sold it and drove my mums and dads cars, corsa, Orion,Sierra, Granada for a few years before buying another newer car of my own in 1990 !

Been sinking money into them ever since ! :)

A 1967 Ford Cortina MKII, I drove it first around 1975 when I was only a pup.

(let off the handbrake - dead easy in those models and all you had to do was twist the T shaped lever!)

    :-)

Pug 504 mechanics, no power steer, vintage 1977 - I sh*t you not (you learn to drive with that after just passing your license @ 18, I can vouch that you then can: (i) park anything anywhere and (ii) pull any bird in anything motorized :D)

rofl! That car was a dog - shocking CVH engine with auto choke was nothing but trouble for my dad and then me, our 1980 example was somehow sold on in 1991 for 500 quid. The buyer proberly should have been payed to take it!

If we're counting sitting on your Dad's lap doing the steering, then mine is aged about 5-6 driving a late seventies Opel Kadett. 1.2 I think, although we always thought it was a really 'fast' car.

First real drive was my friends mother's Mk1 Fiesta on country roads on the west of Ireland.

First car I ever 'steered' on my dad's knee was our 1968 Ford Taunus 12M(the German equivalent of the Cortina). After that my parents moved into Renaults, so I learned to actually drive in a Renault 12 when I was about 13-14. I was always putting the car in and out of the garage, and any 'private' road or parking lot, I was constantly bothering my dad to let me turn the car or drive it up to the gate and stuff, but I had to wait until I was 18 before I could go out and take lessons for my driving test.

Strangely enough, if my parents hadn't switched to Renaults, I would have probably never picked up the passion for cars, because when I went along to pick up the new Renault 12 my dad had bought, I spotted in the corner of the workshop one of the most beautiful sports cars that I had ever seen at that age, (I must have been around 10 at the time): a Lotus Europa. The guys in the workshop must have seen me staring at it, because they allowed me to sit in it and that was it: hooked forever on cars! I never really understood what such a beautiful, tiny little sportscar was doing in a rather mainstream Renault dealership, until much, much later, when I was getting more and more interested in Classic Cars and I started to read up on the car that sparked my car mania, when I learned that the Lotus Europa S1 and S2's had the engine and gearbox out of a Renault 16 !!!

The first car I owned back in Holland was a VW Beetle, rough to say the least, and I owned it for about 5 months when it was stolen! Got another one, this time an absolutely beautiful one owner, genuine 95k km car, which we took with us when we moved to Ireland in the late eighties and sold after three years for much more than I paid for it :). The car is still running around in Ireland, and is now proudly owned by a very active VW club enthousiast :)
