    Hi,

I am a 28 y/o who want to lose about 1/2 to 3/4 of a stone, and improve my fitness. I was thinking of taking up running but want to get a decent pair of runner so as I won't mess up my legs with the impact on the asphalt! Could anyone suggest what type of runners that would be suitable. Don't want to have to ask the assistants in Champions Sports or the likes, as they are basically only fashion shops and the assistants might know what they are talking about.

    Thanks

I must agree that I found my asics great for road running.

If you don;t want to ask in champion why not find a running shop and ask the assistants there

I've worked in the sports industry for over a decade and I can tell you there's no real discussion needed on this topic. Asics gel have the market. Around 80% of New York and London marathon runners use them.

asics is the only game in town
    kayano or GT 2100

Are asic good for basketball and other indoor court games?

im not definate but im sure they would be as it involves running and jumping and they have the gel market as stated above so they would provide 1 of the best "cushions" for your feet as ou run/jump. and they are comfy!

Ascics do mostly running shoes such as the Kayanos or GT2100. These are great running shoes but won't give you much support for lateral movement thats involved in playing court games, just not designed for it. For court games you'd need to get a cross trainer type shoe. Should be able to find something that'd double up as a runnning shoe as long as you're not overweight or planning to do heavy running mileage.

I went down to the Cleary's sale yesterday evening and saw Asics Gel Reactors on sale for €50 or New Balance N699 for the same price. Is this a good deal or would I be better off going for something better?

I'd say the Reactors wouldn't be much good, very much the 'basic' model for light training. Never owned a pair, but that's what I'd imagine. I got a pair of GT-2100s a few weeks ago in Lifestyle, Jervis St for €80, and they seem very good, light, good fit, easy to run in. Although I do my running on the treadmill, but they should be good for roads too. If it's out of your budget, I'd say either try and pick up a pair of GT-2090s (previous model, remember seeing them in a shop when I was looking, can't remember where, sorry) or else the slightly more basic version, the GT-1100s.

Alternatively, if you had a bit more to spend, the Nike Shox 2:45s are supposed to be very good for road running. Could get them for around €95. Make sure they're the 2:45s though, must of the other Shox runners are fashion models. These say 2:45 on the tongue.

Make sure and do a bit of research beforehand. See runnersworld.com and runningtimes.com for advice

nike ones arent great! i had a pair of GT-2100s and they are quite good! very good support! new balance are good but id always advise asics over them if you can get them! but id say new balance are the second best brand of shoe i know! and they are still good!

Depends on the runner. Nike have a technical running branch called Bowerman (although they've started to integrate this into their main lines) which caters for 'proper' runners ie not just fashion. Like I said, Shox 2:45s are supposed to be very good for road running, have gotten good reviews from various running magazines.
