    Full story here

I know many of us have grown up with Richard being a familiar face on the Television. He'll be missed.

based on your previous post, it seems like you might be taking the p*ss there mercury tilt, which if correct seems a little inappropriate given the circumstances.

whatever - he did seem a gentleman - all the reports suggest so too, so why not give the man the simple compliment he deserves on his passing.

yeah point taken on all the other that have died tonight, but not really an excuse to take the mick out of Mr Whiteley is it now ?

Bono is a little boring yeah. And Bob too, but they're trying at least.

The man was an enjoyable entertainer, a gentleman, and will be missed by those who enjoyed his show and aren't bitter enough to take that away from him. Good night, and god bless.

I won't be posting on this subject again.

I am sure that most of us have watched him on TV as we grew up - my favorite TV moment from him was from "It will be alright on the night" - he was doing an interview with a guy who had ferrets and the ferret started to bite on his finger and he was in obvious discomfort - the ferret handler managed to get the ferret off his finger and said that the ferret had been just playing with him, if it had been serious it would have cut to the bone.

He seemed to be a nice guy - RIP.

    His real name is John...proof

Yeah I was sad to hear that.

There was a ch 4 programme a forthnight ago on spoofing celebs and they showed the one where he was spoofed on countdown with two fake contestants.

Now I have to say I roared laughing at parts of it.
The woman contestant started spontaneously crying saying I'm really bad at this ,I'm really bad.
Whitely smiled and said it's ok ( still unaware of the spoof-even though the previous word was diahorea... and the guy contestant had said he had the number 623 and when asked by carol he said 6...carol wrote 6 then the guy said 2... carol looked bemused and said you cant do that...)

But anyway whitely on seeing her crying got the crew to stop filming and went over and gave her a hug and said it was ok-she whispered in his ear(still crying) I'm so bad is there any chance that you could give me the answer to the conundrum :D

    RIP

I'm suprisingly sad to hear this news. He just seemed like a really nice affable character. I have a similar feeling that I did when I heard Bob Monkhouse had died. RIP

Mercury Tilt, you should have more respect for the dead, just because they are famous doesnt mean you can make fun of their passing. Your reasoning on this matter is childish and ignorant.

Is that fake? Slighly suspicious because they have a priest playing  If not, thats mad! Heh. I suppose with 4,000 episodes, something like that has to happen eventually :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 974 ✭✭✭MooShop

Sad indeed- the man was a legend - I always used to think that he was the model for roger mellie in the viz comic
i wonder who'll replace him,if they keep the show going ?
    Tom o connor maybe?

Am i the only one who thinks it would be fitting if they played the countdown theme tune at Richard Whitely's funeral?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

honeslty - i think they should NEVER do another episode of Countdown... EVER.

you cannot separate the man from the show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,102 ✭✭✭Genghis

Sad news indeed. I am not sure I can see the show continuing without him, tbh, he was such an inegral part of it. Where TV is dominated by fame whores, he was a rarity - a man who earned and deserved his fame on merit. RIP.

RIP :( , when I had C4 I loved to watch Countdown and although the last time I saw it was 4 years ago I still remeber what a great host Whiteley was .
He was on Top Gear about 2 years ago and really showed what a nice person he was .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,510 ✭✭✭sprinkles

He'll be missed, although I'm not sure if his jokes will be. A tv icon lost to the ravages of time.

i only saw him on tv a little while back saying that wen he died he'd like to be remembered most as the first face on channel 4.

I'm absolutely shocked and saddened by Richard Whiteley's death. It was only a week ago me and a mate were talking about what a legend he is. A truly great presenter, great personality, some cheesey one liners but a truly great person.
