Havent Did Benching for a good while ( about a year ) at that time i could do 45kg and i weighed 11 and a half stone . But at the moment im building up my bulk again and doing push-ups and bi-cep curling and now weigh near 12 and 3 quarter stone. Since im finished school, ill be heading to the gym now and see how much i can bench, id say more than 45k because i lift around 40kg on the bi-cep curls at home.

I was wondering if people would also post their squats and deadlifts as well for a more rounded comparison.

    Bench - 120kg
    Squat - 160kg
    Deadlift - 180kg

I'm 14 stone... 5ft 11"... loads of body fat that I need to get rid of though

Stan....what age are you!? how long have you been doing your weights for? I know people who are 16 and a half stone who cant do as much as that! thats quite impressive. :D

    I'm 21, 14 stone <10% bf, sq/be/dl = 227.5/157.5/230 (got those lifts as a teen in u110kg category)

    My current 1 rep max's;

Bench Press - 338 lbs (approx 153.3 kg)
    Deadlift - 387 lbs (approx 175.5 kg)
    Squat - 1,438 lbs. (approx 652.2 kg)

I stress however that my training is not conventional, and thus really means jack all.

    I'm only 5ft 7" and weigh 10.5 stone.

I can bench 150kg... twice. That's about it. The yokey where you lift the weight on your shoulders while standing (you kind of push up into it) I can do 250kg a few times.

Age 20, I havent done much benching lately... well consistently.
I'm going to the gym on and off alot
14'ish stone (alotta fatty fat there :P)

    I can bench about 70/90kg 10/6reps
Dont do the squat as it wrecks my shoulders.... dont think I have the right technique
    and deadlift I've never done

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,376 ✭✭✭joc_06

Theres more to getting a strong bench than actual benchin. You need to work all the muscles involved. I bench about once a month at most but still have a relatively strong bench cause of all the other exercises i do.
imo the flat bench isnt as useful an exercise as the incline press hence i dont do it very often. My incline bench is almost as strong as my flat bench @ 100kg
Its crucial to have good technique in the squat but it really is the king of exercises along with deadlift.
The reason your shoulders are sore is because you dont have trap muscles to rest the bar on. There are 3 main areas to rest the bar in a squat but i find just off the neck on the traps works best for me.
Try some hang cleans for a few weeks to work your traps and then squat. You'll not get the burning of the skin with big traps

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,284 ✭✭✭pwd

didn't know the flat bench wasn't as good as the incline. Why's that? Is it because the upper pecs don't get worked enough generally, or it uses more different muscles?

you have me wrong here. I meant the incline bench is more sport specific than the flat bench.
Some people argue that no exercise (in the gym) is truly sport specifc and the whole idea is just to get stronger not incorporate what you do in a game into the wieghts room.

I always do an exercise that has some application to a sport, like lifting (incline press, jump squats) etc or an overhead lunge DB press

The flat bench is an excellent way of getting stronger and has been a staple of athletes the world over for yrs but imo there are better exercises if you wanna play sports like gaa/rugby/Bball etc

Mile? I could hardly cycle that now :):):) I used to do a lot of running but if I tried a mile now the stopwatch would probably run out of space for numbers before I finished. I got lean by dieting and weight training (and fast metabolism) not cardio. 100m? Dunno, make it 40 and I might try :)

Interesting site. Some heavy lifters but also kindof encouraging. Relative to Body weight you wouldnt be too far behind many of those guys. And im losing weight big time. My aim is 170lbs but i'm going to improve my strength levels.
Thats the prob i have with Bodybuilders and their routines. Huge muscle mass but not very functional.
My main aim is 4.7 40yrds dash, 12s 100m, sub 5 min mile. i dont really care about weights. They are a means to an end for me only

This guy id say has some savage horse power
    http://www.idfpa.plus.com/meldon.htm
Those one handed snatches and DB swings are excellent exercises for building brute power and acceleration. Id say he fly throught the 40yrds

I'm a martial artist so fitness is important. I do a 10 min treadmill run after my weights workout - usually 1 min @ 7 m.p.h then 1 min @ 12 m.p.h in case anyone is wondering

The more i look are your lifts the more impressed i am. Those are phenomonal numbers at any age and at 17 they are extraordinary. Where are you from? where do you train?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 32 LiamONeill

I'm from galway. you see the thing is i started weight training when i was 14 (i'm 18 in september) so anyone who has trained weights for that amount of time consistantly would be able to lift what I lift. I'm nothing special, I've just had a head start for starting so early

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,376 ✭✭✭joc_06

ah not really. you're approaching a 2:1 Bench press to Bodyweight and a 2.5:1 squat.
They're superb lifts if true and considering your strength will increase until early 30's you should be capable of much much more.
I means i doubt you've started trainiing properly yet even. Do you do westside? Ever use chains/bands? Supplements?

Westside? Is that a bench press method? i think i have heard of that. Never used it tho. I usually train in 6 week phases. at the moment i'm doing a power phase - no more than 3 reps on compound exercise. Other times i use 12 reps with a 45 sec rest interval. I've made good progress with that. I don't take much supplements - creatine a couple of times but it doesn't work for me. I eat about 4300 calories a day during my power phase and I decrease the ccarbs during my 12 rep phase so i don't gain bodyfat. I'd be interested to learn about the methods you talk about as it is only recently i have thought about competing. Thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,376 ✭✭✭joc_06

Westside can be applied to anything really. Its more a method of max effort one day and another max force day. (Thats it in a tiny nutshell)
They also use about 20lbs of chains and elastic bands to incrrase power and floor presses to get you over your sticking point etc.
A guy called Louis Simmons in the states pioneered it in the 70s but its really a copy and paste job from the russian athletes before then who were cleaning the boards with their new plyometrics routines.
Here is an excellent discussion of it http://www.charliefrancis.com/community/showthread.php?t=5955&page=1&highlight=adam+archuleta

Joe defranco also has his mix of westside called WB4SB - westside for skinny b@stards. Search google and you'll find loads. Go to forums.bodybuilding.com and you'll find loads too and t-nation.com

Finally creatine doesnt work for you?? It HAS TO work. you might be taking it incorrectly or have bad products. But b4 you start on it you should be getting loads of protein in to you. If i could id carry an intravenous drip of the stuff around with me. Essential for every athlete.

Its good that you know your calorie count per day. You seem very organised for a 17yr old. All i cared about back then was where my next can a cider or r!de was coming from. Actually thats all i care about now really- truth be told...

He's an asshole though. When I was in Russia at a competition with him he got drunk one night and started mouting off. Good lifter but total wanker as a person.

Dave FitzHenry is the best Irish lifter. His records are probably there but they are awful for updates to them! He's done around 320/250/320 or so... He got champion of champions in the 2003 Worlds. He used to play rugby for Leinster which is where he was introduced to weightlifting. He was smallish then, maybe 80kg, last time I saw him he was 155kg...

I've nothing against an occasional can of cider but I prefer a pint of stella! My girlfriend knows I'm definately always looking for my next ride! Heh heh. I'm not that serious about training it's just a means to an end really. I train about 4 days a week just like everyone else. Still tho i'm seriously gonna try that westside method. If it works then brilliant. Thanks for introducing me to it.

Also, "poobum", I really doubt your body fat is 8%, I'm pretty sure bodybuilders entering shows get their body fat down to only 6% before a show, and they use really extreme methods, not drinking water etc...

Seriously, 8% is too low to be achieved by 99.99999% without dieting. I'd been dieting 6 months to get to 9%. (Although I'd a lot to lose!)

A lot of suspect numbers here... someone curled 21kg per arm (I'm presuming for reps) at 11 stone and a teen??

totally agree. but i know of 1 guy who trains very rarely and hes around 5% by my eye. He's an unreal athlete. Im trying to get him to an athletics club before its too late. did a mile in 4:47 last week with me trailing in a lap behind after bustin my ass for the last 6 months.
The guy would struggle to touch his toes if he bent down thats how bad he trains. if he had been found @14 im certain he'd be at the olympics

As for the numbers: this is a internet message board. i take what i see with a grain of salt unless i witness the act myself. i know how long it takes to get to some of the numbers quoted and imo no way a teen could do those without being almost professional or at the very least having a excellent coach.

It's not so much the numbers as the accompanying weight and bf%. I know a guy in the States who was going for a 600lbs bench (around 270kg) as a teen - that was with a benching shirt, but he could do over 180kg raw. Thins is though, he had trained for years, was obviously structured physically for it AND weighed over 300lbs (not ripped)...

I used to be really fit as I was on the Leinster Tennis squads and kept up fitness til 16, that's when I wanted size!!!

Eating 0 carbs for a sustained amount of time would make you lose a load of muscle thus not really lowering your bf% all that much. I did it before so I know how disastrous it can be... I was on <50g carbs per day for a couple of months and had just protein for rest of meal. All in all I lost 60lbs but a good 15-20lbs was muscle and another 10 water at least.

firstly i forgot to mention i did have tiny amounts of carbs the ones found in milk and coke etc...but that was all! and it did work i maintained my strength(lifting the same weights etc...) and got heavier(possibly due to the fact that i started creatine the same day as the diet) but i do admit after about 2 weeks i felt i had little energy left by the end of the diet i had to stop because i felt tired all the time but i always do weights in the morning so id wake up go to the gym and basically slp the rest of the day! but i did get thinner and maintain my strength but sacraficed alot else for it!
