    I don't know.... I was expecting a lot more from lost...

    Just watched the first 2 episodes and I thought it was tediously BAD!

    Lines were cheezy, suspense was zero, everything that happened was predictable...

    And of course there was the pigeon-holed american view of the world:

    -> The hero doctor
    -> The crazy cowboy/redneck who thinks with his fists
    -> The intelligent arab/'terrorist'
    -> The hot chick sidekick who is really a serial killer
    -> The token fat guy
    -> The token black guy
    -> The hot blonde chick that can speak a bit of french

    Are there any other stereotypes that are missing???

    Its gonna take a lot of improvement IMO to save it..

    I for one am sick to death of the stereotype that hot blonde chicks can speak a bit of French.

    I seriously misjudged the show because of the first ep.

    i didn't like it that much after the first ep either. My advice is, if you've got nothing better to do next monday.. sit down and watch it. I changed my mind pretty quickly.

    Promise me something.. promise you'll come back here this time 2 weeks (long-time 'Lost' fans will know what i mean) and tell me if you feel the same way!

    If you do.. 'Lost' just isn't the show for you! As simple as that..!

    PS - glad you enjoyed it, Solitaryman.

    the lines are not cheesy at all! i dont see where people are getting that from! there are so many more shows that have such cheesy lines.

    everything that happened was predictable? Ye Im sure you knew a polar bear would be in the jungle,or that Kate was the one the marshall had in handcuffs! or that the pilot would be eaten by "something".

    besides,we are only getting started.Episode 4 is where you realise you will never miss another ep of this show again.

    there is so much you dont know about the characters taht calling them "token" characters is probably the stupidest comment you will ever make!

    and what do you mean save it? its the top rated drama in several countries,its going no where. expect award noms as well!

    Excellent point..!

    Having seen all their flashbacks / backstories.. you cannot just label them with stereotypes this early in.

    i thought it was ****ing superb tbh :)
    it's the first serious series since the soprano's, that i can picture myself watching through to the end.

    The scene were they hear the transmission on the radio. The redneck dude wouldn't shut the hell up. First he started off telling the arab guy to fcuk off, then he was giving out sh1t to the girl for not being able to speak french and he changed his mind every few seconds about who to give out to????

    That had to be comedy at its very best... I was in stitches...

    ok... ive seen jurassic park... theres a big monster thing outside... he sticks his head out the window.... of course hes going the get eaten!!!

    I meant they were stereotyped to the core. Not that their part in the series is token or anything, but they fit the racial and ethical stereotypes set out by their characters...

    yep,lol,i have gotten a bit annoyed with people,lol,i do realise people might that like it,i cant see how,but i accept that. I just got annoyed when someone said it was over hyped after watching half an hour! grrrrrrr :mad:

    You really really need to watch it a bit more before judging - people and events are not what you think they are. That's the fun of this show, we're constantly discovering new things and re-evaluation our opinions/perceptions but - importantly - it still never contradicts what we knew before.

    And how was the polar bear predictable? Seriously!

    Oh and I'm also asking you watch it for two more weeks. If you don't like it then, then I suggest you not watch any more TV 'coz this is as good as TV pretty much gets :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,788 ✭✭✭tvnutz

    like i said,racial and ethnic sterotypes mean nothing when you get the back stories of these characters. you also see some amazing developement in the characters,think shannon for one thing!

    and sawyer just has a big mouth,its not cheesy,its just sawyer.again you'll see that after a while!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

    Watched it and I enjoyed what I saw, but what really pissed me off were the ad breaks every 10 minutes. I think I will wait for the DVD boxset of Season 1 to come out in Sept as I will put my foot thru the telly cause of all those ad breaks !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,788 ✭✭✭tvnutz

    yes the ads are annoyed,i never had to deal with them,they take some suspense away from it alright. and those O2 things are damn annoying!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,559 ✭✭✭Thumper Long

    i dont speak any french so i will have to go for the hot sidekick serial killer :D i really enjoyed it, if as ye say it gets better we're on to a winner. have already started downloading the other 21 aired episodes i dont think i could suffice on the miserable one epsiode a week. ;)

    very true! i had forgotten about the part where he has the orange in his mouth,that was very weird!

    You have to remember that the pilot has to lay alot of groundwork and things move very quickly trying to establish characters. I guarantee you won't be thinking everyone is stereotyped in a few weeks.

    Why? Is that a spoiler of things to come? :mad:

    Killer soundtrack btw!

    The first two episodes are only setting the scene. Once it hits episode 3 the show really starts to develop. Every one of the main characters has their past do deal with. That past and the relationships between the survivors are what make this show. I urge you not to judge the show on the first two episodes alone. Watch until episode 4 and I gaurantee you will be totally sucked in.

    -> The token fat guy
    -> The token black guy

    Have a look around you when your next on a bus or plane etc. I'd be fairly confident you'll see a black guy and a fat guy, are they only there as stereotypical seat fillers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 999 ✭✭✭cregser

    Okay, everyone has already jumped on you about this. But you reminded me of what I thought when I watched the early eps of Lost:

    The crash survivors are strangers to each other. When you are surrounded by strangers you find it easier to take to role of your stereotype. It affords you some privacy because people blindly accept stereotypes for their first impressions instead of trying to work out complex personalities. But as the series progresses and they learn more about each other, some of the facades fall apart. I thought it was really clever and well thought out.

    Also, despite what you may call a mini-spoiler just there, I don't think we should say the likes of "Locke is the best character". I tried not to give any examples for what I said above. Any talk like that puts thoughts in people minds that they don't want when watching a new episode. Agreed?

    I agree with Basquelle

    You have to watch all the eppis to get a picture of whats going on.

    I just knew this show wouldn't appeal to the Eastender and Coronation street/Fair City mob,people here want bad dramas set in dreary London squares or awful northern england towns with cobbled streets.

    Lost is the best show on TV in such a long time, but saying that I knew people here wouldn't take to it and I reckon it wont be a hit kile it has been all over the world.

    This is the first thing I complained about to. The camera even centres on him putting transceiver on the seat before looking out. Thankfully they never make a mistake like that again.

    The amount of ads was stupid, and i'd consider not watching it on rte again, but yeah it was halfway between good and rubbish, the dialogue was retarded( fear - 1-2-3-4-5 dont let it in) wtf.

    I'll give it another few eps though.

    Yeah it was bad writing like this that put me off it to be honest. Poor Poor Poor... No amount of action can save a bad script IMO.

    Perhaps Mr.Lucas is a writer for this as well???

    I think the british and irish crowds will be harder to win over. They usually are a bit more intelligent than our american cousins who probably think that Lost is 'up there with the Sapranos' :rolleyes:

    Haha, my bf sent me a text during the show giving out about it with the stereotypes listed as well, hehe. I thought it was gonna be an excellent show!

    I thought wrong - it was total crap tbh, I might watch the next episode in the hope that it will get better. The constant ads during the show were really annoying as well, RTE know how to spoil everything, that damn O2 sponsorship ad!

    They aren't stereotypes you just don't know enough about any of them yet. The thing I don't get is that people say they are stereotypes just because the guy is black or fat, which means it is they who are making them stereotypes by demeaning the actors/race as being only there to make up the numbers. It's pretty disgusting that people couldn't watch the show and see the black guy, the fat guy without thinking about race etc. Personally I just see those people and say 'hey here's a new character' but if you're all pathetic enough to go 'hey here's a black guy, he must be a useless character/colour so he's only here to be the token character'

    Have to say I was sceptical but am totally hooked. And as someone who doesn't even watch tv (I only have RTE by choice, DVD's and consoles pour moi please) I'm kinda picky

    I still have this ominous feeling that the "monsters" gonna turn out to be something crap and ruin the whole show for me, can't really see how it's gonna be anything other than something thats gonna make me blurt out "thats ridiculous, how on earth are we supposed to accept that!!"

    But maybe it won't, and I really don't want to ruin it by reading a spoiler or going to a preview site!

    Just to note there are actually 3 black characters shown in the pilot. Exactly how many to you need for them not to be taken as token? And certainly none of them conform to any african american stereotypes I know of.

    i cant believe that this was compared to some poster earlier on as the first serious drama since the sopranos. Even after two episodes, the problem is the monster. If it were a 'serious' drama, there would have been no need for a polar bear, a monster, and a lot of the other nonsense. If they just had kept it realistic it had some promise, but not as serious drama. A serious drama worth its salt wouldnt have introduced the sexual tension between Kate and the doctor within the first five minutes. Probably not a bad program at its own level, maybe a step above Buffy and all the other fantasy nonsense, if given time.

    Its impossible to tell how close the sopranos represents mafia bosses in the states, but they dont have polar bears and giant unseen monsters in vain efforts to keep the interest of the punters. Good television it aint.

    I can remembe r a quote from some critic, that "beginning the story in the middle is the tool of the mediocre writer". There is nothing clever in not telling the whole story when you first introduce the character. Let me guess, we are going to have a twist in every episode...big bombshell for five seconds...who cares.

    OK fair enough ya didn't like it but remember this was just the pilot for what turned out to be an amazing show...

    I saw the first two and thought "Great show but it's nothing really special"... The pilot was full of tension (obviously not with those feckin O2 ads...) but the show devlops a LOT and the character development is done wonderfully...

    Stick with it until episode 4... that's when the fun begins...
