I saw an '85 MG Maestro EFi today in Sandyford. It was on pre-'91 type plates. Looked to be in good condition. They are as rare as hen's teeth nowadays.

    No picture unfortunately though.

This red car is a Corolla ke70 LIFTBACK .
Probably around an '82 model with the mirrors like that .

Same as the blue car posted above .I know someone said it about the reverse lights being different to the red car . But the blue car is from a dutch Toyota meet if i remember rightly ,so thats why it is different . Most of the Corolla ranges down through the years have different lamp styles depending on location .ie. uk/irl ,australian ,jap etc.etc and whether they are levin ,trueno or sprinter model .

The lamp in the red picture above is that of a uk/irl KE70 liftback .
Also the main thing that sets it apart is the rubber/ glass at the bottom of the rear window . The way it kicks up at an angle at each corner . On the rear screen of a KE70 SR coupe the bottom rubber is straight across .
So to me it is definately a Corolla KE70 LIFTBACK .

Here a picture below .It was the best i could find .Also note i had to flip it ,thats why the badges and petrol flap etc are all backwards

Golf GLD on the N11 near Bray today, saw him again this evening on the seafront in Dun Laoghaire. Apologies for the blurry photo, the car was excellent and was quite possibly being driven by the original owner.

No time for a pic - but I was very excited to see a silver Aston Martin DBS pass by on the other side of the road to me near Glenageary.

Don't remember ever seeing one before in Dublin. My fave Aston!

    Here's one I didn't see. :D

I'd have to agree that it is the loveliest Aston.

Yes,makes it a little overpriced compared to a 2 year old golf!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,461 ✭✭✭Max_Damage

There is a few Citi Golf's here, seen a '97 and a '00 around Dublin.

Sure the VW T2 is still made in Brazil (there is a 06-D one doing the rounds here in Dublin), and the Peugeot 504 is still made for the Kenyan market!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭zilog_jones

AFAIK production of the 504 stopped in 2005 in Nigeria (and Kenya the year before). There's a '04 Beetle that seems to be permanently residing in the car park in Arthur's Quay in Limerick - kinda weird considering production ended in '03 though I guess it's possible it could have been unregistered for a year.

A chap near Kildimo, Co. Limerick personally imported half a dozen old bugs from Mexico just before production ended. They were mostly base model red ones but he managed to get in one Ultima Edicion (last edition) model in the light blue colour too. He got them over to sell them here and I reckon he was probably sitting on a couple of them for a while waiting for buyers. Hence the delay in registering. :)

ROR (RipOffRepublic again ! )Go to UK, buy scrapped 77 Golf, reg it here with €40 classic duty and get ZV plates, then go to SAfrica, buy same coloured (07 ? ) Mkl golf and put on ship ( €1,500 to UK port ), collect from UK port, drive to Stranrare, boat to Larne, drive down to your house, swop plates and chassis plates, BINGO - 07 Mkl fully 'legit' for €9k (?).
These 'Importers' and the Revenue are charging you ( €10k? ) over the real value of a Mk l Golf? If you brought it into the UK, you might only pay (£!,000 ? ) tax !!!!

Friend of mine years ago wanted to import a 3dr Cossie , £3k VRT said the revenue, "How much for a 4dr Cossie?" £600 said the Revenue - "Why the extra VRT ?" " 3dr is more classic than the 4dr "!

The VW Type2 'Kombi' is still in production in Brazil - http://www.vw.com.br/default.asp

^ Is that really illegal? I've seen it done to Land Rover Discovery's (on ZV plates) and Range Rovers.

What I'd like to know is how these cars (i.e. original VW Beetle, VW T2, VW Citi Gold, etc.) get registered in this country, given the lack of safety and emissions features these cars have with respect to their modern years.

Its not illegal on landies, well,if its done right poeple swop the entire chassis, thats perfectly legal.A friend of mine has done it to his 83 range rover, swapped the chassis to an earlier one,and got a ZV number.

granted, the "new" old VW bugs, buses etc don't have the airbags, crumple zones, side impact bars etc like modern cars but in terms of emissions, the old air-cooled engine in the lasdt of the bugs had electronic fuel injection, a catalytic convertor and a bunch of other stuff to keep the emissions down. I wouldn't imagine there would be much problem there.

I suppose if you look at it, they're no more dangerous for the drivers than motorbikes and there's no problem buying one of those round here. (is there even an NCT for bikes?)

I think this is legal because (like in VW beetles) the CHASSIS bears the registration number and VIN and the body is removable and considered "spare parts". I.e. you can swap any body you like onto a chassis so long as the VIN and reg numbers remain with the chassis.

I'm doing that on my bug project, '55 bug shell on '72 bug chassis and keeping the '72 reg number. It won't look right to anyone who knows how to read the reg numbers but how many of those folk are about and am I really bothered?

I think there would be legality issues if the '55 VIN and reg number were to be swapped onto the '72 chassis (i.e. cutting the VIN off the chassis and rewelding). You'd wonder why though, it's kind of academic in the case of old vehicles. In terms of new cars though, there's criminals making a living from "ringing" cars like this...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,569 ✭✭✭Blue850

But lets be realistic, how many ZV'd Range Rovers are genuine chassis swops?
Whos going to check? A lad I work with was driving his newly cleared MK1 Cortina home from the customs still on it UK plates ,last UK tax disc from 1990, insured on the phone but no cert/disc, got stopped at a checkpoint and the first the guard said was " I suppose this yoke is exempt from everything!"
I know of one person advertising for an Irish tax book for a particular car he has imported.

point 1: Yep,the chassis bears the reg no,same as the beetle,if you go cutting the vin out of one car and welding it into another then you are breaking the law.But it seems to go largely un-noticed when it does happen.

    point 2: im around!!:P;)
but you are right,99% of the people wont spot it:)

Yes,ads like this occasionally come up in the vintage magazines. I have a tax book for a 77 MK2 escort with a nice reg with just 2 owners on it,and iv been offered a tidy few quid for it before(wont sell it though).

The stupid new 5 digit ZV plates only made this problem worse IMO.

I was thinking there yesterday (while we're on the topic of registrations), come 2017, when an '87 car will be 30 years old, I wonder if they will be eligible for a ZV plate (or whatever the variant will be then), as this is when the current system was introduced.

If the current set up is still operating i would say yes,i have my doubts if it will though.
What happens when registration numbers start to overlap...
