Could have laid unsold somewhere in (UK?) , then been registered as 01 in (UK?) and imported here ???

Remember seeing a W210 (97model ) on 01 plates for sale - turns out it was originally unsold here when new model came along, was exported unreg'd to the UK where it remained unsold until 2001, then it was sold (to an unsuspecting Irish 'bargain' hunter? - "Got a great deal on a 01 Merc in the UK":D ) re-imported here and given a 01 reg, probably sold on when he realised he was duped (Salesman tried to convince me it WAS a 01, until I produced MY 97 W210 with nearby chassis no., AND a printout from a Merc dealer showing that it was manufactured in 1997 :o:o )

Used to see Mercs overseas 'upgraded' with lights off the later models, but never seen a 'retro-look' one

According to Mercedes, production of the last W124 was in 1996, with Wikipedia mentioning some production in India until December 1997, but there doesn't seem to be any legit way to have an 01 reg on a W124, unless it remained unregistered anywhere until then (extremely unlikely).

There are quite a few W124 E250 diesels around that were made in India from CDK and were sent back to the UK and here and can be seen running on plates as late as '02. I had a '99 manual for a while.

Fair enough, it sounds like it was an Indian one - saying that, if I wanted an 01 E-class, I'd much prefer an Indian-built W124 over a Daimler-Chrysler-built W210!

Yeah the W210 was a bit of a mess all right!

I remember this Merc it was for sale on Adverts a few years ago(2008?). The guy was explaining that he had it in France where they made a mistake translating the paperwork and wrote 81 as opposed to 91. When he brought it here, the registration was done based on the French papers and it remained as an 81-very handy these days...

The higher suspension seems to be the clue for Indian models ;)

Lovely looking 911! Great colour too!

But needs original wheels (and correct large digit plates).

Yes indeed and most of them have a full sump guard underneath. Air con, manual and front electric windows are other clues along with Blue, White and Black body colours

'...on the drive home from north Africa...'

We seem to be missing out on something here, not everyone is 'on the drive home from north Africa' - South of France / Spain maybe, but North Africa

You're evidently not driving a classic (tho' they might be easier fixed than modern stuff )

Nail on the head there. A classic is, what a trip like that should be done in. Especially when you go anywhere near the desert.

DPF, EGR etc. die in no time in that environment.

And a classic can be repaired by any backstreet mechanic.

Going myself to Morocco next year and it'll be in my '89 VW LT.

Southside W123 (owned by the same man for years now :) )

Southside 911 with 'Magnus Walker type' shopping in Lidl (prefer to see a driver in rags who knows/loves his motors than a monied suited up pratt who hasn't a clue except that 'it's a babe magnet, man' )

That is a beauty. Though you'd have be nervous parking anywhere where trolleys are swung about.

That's why he parked outside rather than in the car park ;)
