It might have been a personal plate, thats why i looked it up.:)
Kind of a pity it will lose that number over here if its being imported.

Sorry about the sarcasm. Comedy is not my forte.
The 'older' plate really looks the part.
    54 D **** won't look nearly as good.
And don't get me started on the ZV***** plates.

Think of the money the government could bring in if they charged a grand to move an old reg to a vintage car.

I'd pay it to have a EI plate on a MK1 Golf I was looking at

Dont think thats the answer either, old regs should be left where they are,it would just get messy as you wouldnt have an idea of what was original, besides too much of that goes on anyway. It would have to be an unused series to diffrienciate imported cars, although not with the stupid 5 digits. But thats just my personal opinion.I know most people dont care.
Dont want to be going off topic here.

But are there any unused series left, without overlapping with NI or pre-'63 British plates?

There are a few alright.IG and VI being two.

Many counties had lots of unused numbers left in 1986..it was mostly Dublin, Cork etc who were running low on combinations. For example, Carlow still has c.30,000 unused combinations.

I agree about ZV ***** plates - they look totally wrong!

    Isn't IG used up North?

Yes..oops..femanagh,i always forget about the northern marks for some reason.:P

Only VI so unused in its entirety, though as has been pointed out, there is loads of unused marks from the original series.

That sounds promising. This time, instead of going from VI 1 to VI 99999999999999999999999999 like they did with the ZV plates, it should run AVI 1 to ZVI 999, then 1 AVI to 999 ZVI, then VI 1 to VI 9999 and 1 VI to 9999 VI. That should keep things going for a while. :)

And also why not catagorise by age instead of County, VI XXX from1900-1930
VI XXXX from1930-1960,AVI XXX from1960-1986,and so on.
It wont be an exact representation but would be more in keeping.

Oh yeah, I guess there are still a lot. Limerick city only finished on xxx FTI.

Yes..this would be better that whats going on now.Yes,i know that when the ZV system was introduced originally there wasnt many cars being imported, but there really was no excuse for the 5 Digits.

Anyone want to give me the job of sorting it out!? lol!:D:P

    You have my vote anyway!

(The ZV system could be modified also, by introducing reversed ZV no's for pre 1960 vehicles, and ZVA, ZVB, ZVC etc etc etc for 1960 - 1986 vehicles)

This isn't really a classic. But it's funny to see it. It was up at Mount Merrion earlier today. Looks like a Crown Vic.

That would lead to the problem of potentially overlapping with the UK registrations (VA = Lanark, VB = Canterbury, etc.) although I believe they would not have used Z.

@Mr. 'H': Yes it's a Crown Vic Police Interceptor (P71), or at least a Crown Vic made to look like one. There's a few in the country (some used as novelty limos etc.), and there's one on Carzone: http://www.carzone.ie/search/Ford/Crown-Victoria/POLICE-C/200939195322782/advert?channel=CARS

Ex police cars are dirt cheap in the US

In the original British system, letters Z and I were reserved for Ireland whilst Scotland got G, S and V

That's your man off Annesley bridge, right? I used to work in the area years ago and he always had one or two classic Mercs parked on the pavement
