I was wondering which is a better gun for shooting fox, the .223 or the .204 and how they differ from each other power and price wise? Any opinions?

Here is my little .223 foxer, does the job fine , no bother to hit a clay at 400m with it using cheap surplus 55grn .223 fmj.

How are you finding the stock with the scope? Line of the scope looks fairly high off the top of the stock..

Thats a nice looking bit of kit. I was looking at a remington 700 with a bull barrel and it was 1015euro, how much would something like yours set me back? And would there be much difference in accuracy between a gun like yours and a regular bolt action? But if you are hitting clays at 400 hundred yards i think its definately a good tool for the job.

Hi bulls eye , the remington is perfect for the job , just throw away the trigger and fit a timney or something similar and you have a great foxer, my speedmaster in the picture would cost you around 2500€ without scope and rings , as is in the picture with the rings and the leupold mk4 around 4500€,

I take it you're not hunting them for the pelt then? :D

All that would be left would be the brush!

Thanks Oldzed, Um I think the remington it will be then, your gun is a just a bit too pricey for me at the moment. One can only dream. Some day though. If you do shoot fox with a .338 laupa please let us know the results, should be very interesting not to mention messy :D excellent.

For a fox gun id use a 22/250 very flat tradjectory and can be picked up for very cheap around €400 for a second hand one with a good scope

Keep an eye out for used .220 Swift Remington 700s coming on stream second hand as lads switch to full race .223 auto lookie likeys!
Second hand value is gonna be cheap as chips,so much so that I may forego getting a semi custom 10-22 Ruger to land a Swiftie! They are robust and super accurate, ammo price is a consideration as is noise and the scarinf of game/prey.
However,I so seldom get out to hunt a single round landed right where I want it out of one of these bull barreled shooting machines will bring a smile to my face every time!
Foxes would be my preffered quarry, but a bunny sniped at 400 yards would do me for WEEKS!
I need to invest in some optics and a good bi-pod along with the rifle, but at a steal of a price I'd have enough left over to score these!
The low recoil would mean I could teach my son long range shooting without scaring him, though my kid brother from 11 years old shot my sporty .270 Steyr Mannlicher Luxus Full Stock Carbine with aplomb and decent accuracy while wearing decent hearing protection.
I must get on to a mate of mine who has a Remmy 700 .220 Swift and is on the lookout for a .223 and see if we can't do a deal!

Not to start a slagging match, but is 400 yards not getting on towards being a bit too far for safety when bunny-scaring?

Why exactly? The principles of safety apply equally at 400 as they do at 25....

Zed, according to research the .338 lapua is totally unsuitable for shooting foxes but it's perfect for hunting aircraft and small houses.

A .220 Swift or a 22-250 second hand do sound like very good options as one or two shots a nite would do me if they hit. But I would be a bit concerned about barrel wear especially in a second hand .220 swift. I've been told both these guns are great but have very short barrel life. And would getting a licence for a 22-250 be any moe difficult than a .220 Swift?. I was told by a friend to get a licence for a 22-250 is very difficult.

    I have a .220 swift ..I love it .
    It's a Ruger 77 Mk2 ..

The whole thing about barrel life in these has been done to death .. True , If some idiot gets a box of ammo and just keeps plinking away without any thought for letting the barrel cool between shots ..it will cause damage. I imagine the same applies to any of the very high velocity calibres out there. The Ruger .204 is faster , the 22-250 a bit slower , the .17 .. is also pretty hot.

Repeated "Let her rip" sessions with any of these won't do the gun (Or your pocket) any good at all.

If you happen to know someone who has one , you are in a good position to
check how it's been used, cleaned.etc. ..If not, an examination of the bore is essential. But I guess thats true of any second hand gun.

At the rate of 2 shots a night ..it would take a long long time to wear out the barrel ..if ever.

    Best of luck .
