I didn't agree with a lot he said, but he was a great man in many respects.

Conclave will be held in 15-20 days and all the cardinals under 80 (117 of them I believe) get locked into a room to pick their favourite. You need 2/3 plus 1 to win. When we get one white smoke comes out of a chimney. JP2 was not the first choice and it could go on for a few days.

Was wondering that myself. ie one minute you are fallible and then the next minute when they put the pointy hat on you to make you pope......Puff. I am invinci......I mean, I am infallible!! Muahahahaha!!

Despite what I might think about religion though I do Respect the man himself and all the good he did (well except for the condom bit).

    May he rest in peace.

I have to say that when I saw the article on the Sky News website, I felt awful sad when I saw this picture. I can't explain it, I just feel v. sad looking at that photo. Considering I ain't the biggest fan of the Catholic church, I'm finding this feeling a bid odd.

the pope is to be buried on wednesday according to BBC

as for when does the new pope get elected.

The college of cardinals will gather between 15 to 20 days after the death's pope. and will be sequestered in conclave in the cestine chapel. they will be moved then to accomodation at night time and return to the cestine chapel the following day until a pope is elected.

two thirds majority is required to elect a pope, but if after thirty ballots a two thirds majority cannot be reached a 50 percent plus one vote will suffice.

I don't feel guilty about not liking the church. I think if you are a good person, then that's all that matters.

Anyway, may the pope rest in peace. At least he's not suffering anymore.

Nope, that happened a few weeks ago. He was on a balcony with a couple of kids and they were suppose to release a bunch of doves, except one of the birds wouldn't go away and kept flying around them.

Anyway, I don't consider myself a Catholic, but then that's not a requirement in order to recognise the passing of a very decent human being. RIP.

He was one of the key figures that brought about the end of the Cold War and the collapse of communism.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

But influenced the spread of AIDS, Homophobia and the birth of millions of children into poverty.

As already said, he did so much work to rid Poland, and many other countries Communism, he buitl bridges between Catholics and so many other fates, most importantly the Jews and the Eastern Orthodox faiths.

That good enough for you to respect a great man.

What ever about his views on homosexuality or contraception, it was his right as a human to believe what is right or wrong. While those views may now seem to be out of date, they were his, and you should respect his views as I respect yours.

Might I suggest you use your internet connection to visit any news site? Switch on RTE? Are you really so detached from day to day life that you are totally unaware of the influence of a major figure in the World for the past 27 or so years? Are you seriously saying you are so uninformed about world events that your first post on boards is asking such a question?

Here's a little link for you

    http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1044120,00.html

It's from a magazine called TIME. It's a pretty popular publication throughout the world. As a starting point for your considered research you might take a look there.

Good luck and best wishes in your efforts in catching up on the last 27 years.

It's like a distant cousin died or something, all in all a very strange experience. While I didn't agree with all of his views, I'm sad to see him gone.

Jesus Christ read the damn thread.

He helped Poland get rid of Communism, he built bridges between Catholicism and the Jews and the Eastern Orthadox Church and many other religions.

Get up off your ar'se and try do research and maybe, just maybe you will be known as something more then some idiot trolling the internet and not reading where and what he is posting.

One could say the same about Hitler's views on the Jews.

Sure everyone's entitled to their own views but when they begin to make a huge negative impact on the world then there is a huge problem.
