IOLBB ping crash

I have 512k IOL dsl and all of a sudden I can't get a ping better than 150 with CS1.6. I've been getting a stable 40-50 for weeks now and I didn't change anything at all and now suddenly any server I check out gives me 200ish pings. I was wondering if anyone had experienced something similar?

If this clears up on its own I'll let you know.

Edit: BTW "suddenly" means in the last half hour...

Yeah got the same thing. I've fired them off an email, i suggest u do the same. Attach some screenshots of pings to 192.111.39.1 and 192.111.39.4. They're so friggin unreliable!!!

Just noticed it in CS Source ... this used to happen all the time but it hasn't happened in a while so I figured it was fixed ... sigh ...

Who is best to email, is there any point emailing customercare@iol.ie at this time of night?

It would seem that my dl speeds have just died also. 20k/s max. Ffs. I had been so pleased until now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25,848 ✭✭✭✭Zombrex

Just out of curiosity is this anything to do with the link from the exchange to the Esat network? I am on the Bray exchange.

I have no idea what you're talking about, but I'm in Knocklyon(D16) if thats any help...

    :/

I'm on shankill exchange but it seems that every router on their network is dropping packets all over the gaff from my trace routes.

Don't email customer care, email tech support. Make sure to attach ALL the details first time though, because u will be waiting a day between each reply....

    :/

ADSL is just your phone line running to the local Eircom telephone exchange, in your local town. In the telephone exchange is a box owned by Esat that is part of their national network which is how you get out on to the actual Internet. I have heard that Esat's link from Bray to the rest of the Esat network, running along the Dart Line, is pretty crap. I was just wondering if that is where the problem is, but if you are D14 it is obviously not.

I'm in D16 too and I'm getting some pretty ****e pings

I did a tracert on it as well, its at the first hop outside my network which happens to be bas001.bmt.esat.net [193.95.142.242]

These are from a minute ago, was getting good BT speeds aswell solid 45kb/sec now its dropped to 16.

    having problems with iolbb.
Crap I'm timing out running tracerts!
I been dropping packets for the last few weeks but exceptionally worse now.

Ping around the 200 mark for CS:S when yesterday evening I had been ping a somewhat steady 60.
This stuff is really beginning to get irritating. Top money, for crap speeds and crap service. They can try to blame it on contention ratio all they want, but they've got some serious hardware issues there, this is happening way too often.

I can't imagine just how bad its going to get if they attempt to 'up' the speeds to 1Mb. They can't even get the 512 down to a consistent reliable service.

Seems to be back to normal for me, 35ms to www.jolt.co.uk

    Use traceroutes people, not ping.

    tracert www.boards.ie

EVERYONE please complain to esat. complain and complain a lot. Ring them now! theyre open till 9pm. 1890923111 :) Pleeeeeeease ring them and log the complaint.

I absolutely can't wait to switch over to any other broadband provider.

    All,
The latency has gone to hell here in Limerick too.
    ~200ms to UK
    ~225 to Europe

First time I have seen this problem on IOLBB to be honest, and we've been playing Wolf ET online for a few hours almost every single night for the last 3 months.
    (sad.....)

    Zardette & Zardor

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,334 ✭✭✭OfflerCrocGod

I play ET a bit at night and I've noticed the spikes - but they are very rare indeed like once every two hours or so. Usually in critical sections of the game too, like when I'm running away with the bloody train to load it up with ammo, it makes me go nuts!

I live in the Dundalk area have had iol broadband for over a year and had been enjoying pings of 50 on my favorite game Enemy Territory. But in the last month or so pings have sky rocketed to numbers like 200-600 this is unacceptable and a s**t service for the money we pay. Too many people have the same problem so i can stop wrecking my own head and stop blaming my Pc. I am ringing them up this week to end my contract and join Smart telecom when they arrive in my area. Let’s hope they get it right.

At least you even had it.

All of yesterday [wel, from when i got home after work at about 7] IOLBB was down for me. :(

hmm, was thinking of getting bb of iol but if pings are regularly this bad i might just go with €ircon

EVERYONE! please do tracerts when you have the problem and send them into ressupport-live@mailnj.custhelp.com

hmmm, it seemed to get better last night. And now, its doing the same thing.
I'm beginning to wonder if its simpley a case of Iolbb's hardware not being able to handle the capacity of customer's they are taking? Overloading their switches, routers? Possibly even just a case of a poor layout?
    Here's what I am getting to boards.ie

Some nice loss (majority of it) before I even make it outside the iolbb network! Sweet...what am I paying for again??
Also, we should be careful with these tests. Wouldn't it be ironic if everytime iolbb subscribers had crappy connection, they ended up dos'ing boards.ie? :D

EDIT: emailed results, asked them to promptly address the problem.
I would also note to the others, slow transfer speeds can be a result of 'contention' but loss is not contention related.
I know others have done this in other countries, but because they are continually losing packets (data loss), this would be a failure of service, in which the customer would be entitled to credit..or a refund. Anyone heard of this over here?

Wahoo ! this many ppl mail in and they might at least acknowledge that theyre ****. Do tracerts to www.google.ie. Esat host at least some of the irish part of google so they get u to use it for ping tests. 192.111.39.1 and 192.111.39.4 are their DNS servers. Do tracerts to them too, as they have absolutely no excuse for a bad ping.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,371 ✭✭✭✭Zillah

It would appear that, for me anyway, the pings go really crap for an hour or two around 7 and 8 oclock. After that it's fine. How strange. What is and how do I do, a tracert?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 345 ✭✭padraigf

A tracert traces the route that your signal takes and how long it takes to get to a given address.
    Go to start -> run
Type in cmd and push enter
Then type in tracert 192.111.39.1 or whatever other address you want to run it to.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 75 ✭✭DrChoda

Tracerts will show you how many hops it takes to reach the destination. It shows average speeds it takes to reach each hop. (each hop is a router)
A well built network will have the least amount of hops before you leave it to reach 'the net'. A poorly designed one will have many hops across its own internal routers before actually reaching the net.

Tracerts however don't present a very good average result. You're better off using Pathping which does multiple tracerts and displays the results.
(i think pathping is only available on win2k and up)

If you can use pathping, keep the results. Any signs of loss within your own network is a problem that should be addressed immediately by your isp. Anything outside of their network is beyond their control.

Noticing as well that around 7pm each the problems get worse. Then after 11-12 they start to get better. This is certainly a problem with iolbb network, and has got f*c*all to do with contention ratio. (aka we have crap hardware and have no plans on upgrading. contention ratio is not a standard limited to dsl lines, it has to do with the design/hardware in use of the isp)

Got a reply back from Esat that included this
If it is possible, can you do this again, but also record the time this happens, and run "ping -t bas001.bmt.esat.net". Please let about 30 of these run, and copy and paste these results into a mail for us.
Please also include your current IP address when this happens, you can find out your IP address from www.whatsmyip.com

This seems to be the information they want. They don't seem that concerned with the connection once it leaves bas001.bmt.esat.net, so I would say that is where the problem is. So anyone else get this tonight just bombard support@iol.ie with ping stats :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 52 ✭✭zardette

Hm, I got the same reply, and set of instructions.

    They also said that
"We are aware of a potential issue with the bas001 server"

Pings sucked last night, until sometime after 11pm, then they went back to 'normal' (or at least playable)

    Zardor.

You would think since it is their server on their network they would be able to get to the bottom of it without having to make us, the customers, run diagnostic checks for them

Got the same response. My ****ing game hosting company is so much more professional than them. IF theres a problem with their network you'll know about it in less than 3 minutes. Takes a week for iol to acknowledge anything.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 75 ✭✭DrChoda

is this bas001 a server or a router?
Check my previous tracerts as I do not even touch this, so the problem is not only with bas001.

I'm glad they are aware of a problem  however, more importantly are they going fix it? I'll post my email later on when I get a proper response from them.

Imagine if you purchased a phyiscal item. It kept screwing up, so you take it back to the store that manufactured it (not just sells it). They reply 'we are aware of a problem with that product' and then expect you to leave it at that???

this has been going on for way to long. What pissses me of the most is that you can get 22Mb connection for half of what we are paying in a country not to far from here. BUH

I had always thought that the basxxx were exchanges up until I noticed that most people used bas001 and that everyone here doesnt live in shankill :S.

Last time when I had a problem similar to this they just didnt do anything and waited for it to just go away by itself (which it did). That was only 2 an a half weeks ago though....

BAS - Broadband Access Server. I think they can have hundreds of connections, it's the terminal between the ATM network and the internet backbone, so the DSLAMs feed into it....everyone feeds into these BASes.

Has anybody gotten any kind of serious response from iol regarding this issue, yet?

I mailed them last thursday, got the standard response.
I sent that back on friday, and it's being escalated.

It's really starting to piss me off.
As i'm sure it is, everyone else.

It only really happens in the evenings.
It's been fine all day today til about 4pm.
Now it's gone to hell again.

My experience of it too. It was totally fine till 4ish. It's always the same response.
