Monday for example poses a severe challenge for any weather organization
and has the chance of dumping alot of snow to higher levels above
    400m throughout the day.
Population in areas above 1200ft asl are actually quite small in Ireland.
Take Roundwood for instance reputedly the highest village in Ireland, it's only 800ft asl or so.
It's actually quite common for wet snow to fall at ASL's of 1200ft or higher without settling and for that event to go both un noticed and un forecasted basically because very little people get to see it-except perhaps people who work in coillte woods, but then they get their own private forecasts for that event anyway.
Snow events for people who live at altitudes of 600ft to 900ft though would involve a lot more people and its those that are the subject generally of warnings for snow on high ground.

The likelyhood of settling snow or disruption at sea level this week is slim.

I disagree Earthman i agree that on Monday distruption at low levels
are slim but not on Tuesday or Wednesday..

It will be just as cold on Tuesday and Wednesday as it was on
Tuesday and Wednesday of last week :)

I actually think that there is a higher possibility of distruption
this week due to the amount of precipitation around :)

at this stage now id like the buildup for a long, hot, sunny summer to begin:) but looks like we have to wait another week at least with temperatures around 5c all this week at sealevel. I seriously doubt dublin will see any snow as it has to be almost 0c for snow to fall in dublin, dublin rarely gets snow but during cold snaps you only have to drive 16km away from the city centre to see the snow appearing.I took thursday off college because we had nearly 4 inchs of snow thursday morning and when i explained the situation in college on friday morning they didnt believe me.. 'there was no snow here' lol. Rte gave a chance of snow for this week but our temperatures are gonna be that bit milder than the uk so im not sure.

Have you not learned anything at all from last week w.check?
Brilliant snow synoptica and how much did you get in Portmarnock?

Those charts look lovely but so did the ones from last week and we uhm saw a lot of Rain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

We were unlucky here Earthman and the pressure was too high in
    hindsight ;)

Last week we were looking at the pressure hovering around 1020hpa
this week here it will be hovering around 1005hpa ;)

    And the temps were?
Thats right only really Borderline cold enough for snow at night time-gone by day and often gone by night too :)

It shows how spoilt we've been in the last few weeks
when a chart at 42hrs like this gets no mention  :D

oh I forgot to mention, your friend the eagle did mention, that the greatest risk of snow for the East was on Tuesday or wenesday.

Given that last week , he was hard set to mention snow at all-you can make of that what you will.

And you're right it is a marginal event-I certainly wont be oiling up my sleigh for use anywhere other than on high ground or well inland-it could go either way-risk of disruption due to large quantities of snow if it falls to sea level or on the coast which it probably will at times-minimal.

Hey hey all you who think that last week was the end of winter :D

I dont use that smiley lightly ... ok i do :D

Well the coming week is one where it has the possibility of turning out
very very snowy. Much more precipitation will be about then there was
last week with plenty of chances for widespread snow.

Monday for example poses a severe challenge for any weather organization
and has the chance of dumping alot of snow to higher levels above
    400m throughout the day.

A warm front moves down the country from the north on Monday afternoon
giving some snow to areas above 400 - 500m.

Sorry had to reboot the computer..

Later on Monday is when the fun begins.. a cold front tracks south
meanwhile very cold air is undercutting the front which should
turn the rain to snow even to low levels later into Tuesday morning.

Tuesday morning and Tuesday will be bitterly cold with northeasterly winds,
heavy snow showers will affect northern and eastern
facing coasts with significant accumalations in places especially on
    higher ground and during darkness.
Temperatures will range from 4c in the east to about 5-6c in the west
but with a much colder atmosphere those temperatures will plummet
    under any showers.

Wednesday will continue bitter with heavy snow showers across the
north and east with further accumalations..

A few charts to ponder over

i could go on but im getting tired :D;)

see i told you it would be mild during the weekend with a return to cold mid week but did you listen, no :D see see see.

actually seriously though one or two of those charts look colder than the last week, but then they havent been verry reliable this year so will wait until tomorrow to say for sure what will happen.

the temperatures just haven goten low enough country wide to cause proper distruption from snow especially in and around Dublin, the current on-going cold spell isnt even a cold spell by 80s, early 90s standards, those numerous cold spells back then brought sub zero temperatures nationwide 24 hours a day and often lasted for a week solid even in coastal parts of dublin where its normally very mild. The daytime temperatures were often -4 during snow and then when the sun came out they wud still be around -2 or -1 and nothing wud melt. Sure we had some snow last week but as soon as it stoped the temperatures rose fast and the snow melted within hours in most parts...

    4.1c here now..

Cold front broke up over the East last night didnt leave a single drop here..

Im watching the wrap round of the LP which is forming it is currently
giving heavy snow to Glasgow and the atmosphere here in Dublin and
along the east coast supports snowfall from the feature. It's tracking
very slowly south and my estimate for arrival in Dublin 1500hrs :)

If it's later the better ;)

Snow showers reported in Donegal this morning.

March of Many weathers is upon us.

I dont think its going to amount to much though, unless a sustained easterly gets going again and so far that air has retreated back to Kent and the South East of England.

Other than that, its a case of after dark sleety snow at sea level followed at daytime by rainy sleet.

There *might* be enough Irish sea activity tomorrow to bring in some hail sleet and snow showers and it will be colder-but as for winter, its just dragging its heels now-roll on summer tbh

I see an advance weather warning of heavy snow has just been issued by the british met office. I wonder if any of that will head this way????

    nah
you might have some showers tonight but its too warm at daytime for anything significant.
Showers in the East tomorrow might produce something at lower levels, but height is what you need.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

The atmoshphere would support snow if we got our hands
on precipitation.. just had a few flakes of ice in the wind ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

Heavy hail shower left a nice pile of wet ice around the place
no chance of going out now

Hopefully twill cool things down and ice over :D

i think the chance of snow almost minimal, certainly nothing that will settle, even if it does its gonna turn milder from thursday with temperatures back into double figures by the weekend, at this stage i want the buildup for summer to begin too, hopefully seeing temperatures of 14c, 15c next week and 16c, 17c by the end of the month.

    Double figures by the weekend??

Fraid not Gonzo no more than 7c in Dublin on Saturday and Sunday ;)

In relaity it is meant to be 6c on Saturday and 5c on Sunday ;)

Infact i dont think temperatures will hit double figures in Dublin
for at least 10 days :)

Loads on radio. Cars, lorries getting stuck everywhere.(edit:-agree, everywhere is a slight exaggeration ) Latest is ballinteer area of M50. N11 bad with vehicles getting stuck in Kilmacanogue area. Roads bad around Roundwood, the list goes on.

Pile up doesn't surprise me. Hopefully not too serious.

NRA reporting snow at Sandyford. No treating of roads in eastern areas. ie N11 & M50. Temps are not very low. If roads were treated then there wouldn't be the huge problems that there are now.
