New video from Dronehawk showing progress of the construction works on the Ringaskiddy to Barnahely protected road.

I wonder will the motorway restrictions be in place between Carr’s Hill and the N40. Learner drives on Maryborough Hill won’t be able to go to the City Centre/N40 from the slip now, as well as learner drivers on Rochestown Road and Carrigaline Road with the City Centre/N40. Given all signage on Rochestown Road uses N40 and not N28, maybe Bloomfield will just become the N40. TII told me before it is effectively the N40 since it’s such a short segment of the N28 and you can’t go southbound

@DylanQuestion Click the image link in the quoted post above... this the most likely start of motorway restrictions. The approaches to N40 won't be under motorway rules..

I think you need to hurry up and pass your test ! The existing Maryborough hill on-ramp to the N28 (N) will be closed and drivers starting form Maryborough Hill will need to travel South from Maryborough Hill to the Carrs Hill Interchange via the new link and join the North bound motorway at that point, in order to travel onwards to the N40. The motorway restrictions will probably not be in place all the way to the North to the N40, but it is difficult to see them ending before the Carrs Hill interchange. So yes, any learner driver etc starting from Maryborough Hill with the intention of getting onto the N40 (W) will most likely have a problem.

Thank you both. So learners will still be able to access the N40 from Rochestown Road, and be able to access Mount Oval from Bloomfield

can you post the newsletter here

Has this actually started? It feels like over a year ago we were told its all done, that it just needed signing from the minister that took 6 months, and then that it was to proceed to construction "immediately" over 2 months ago?

    What is going on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,087 ✭✭✭blindsider

Yep it's started. The Barnahely protected road is well under way. The main M28 has had a lot of prep work done and, in the last week, a fleet of earthmovers and excavators has been moved in. They're visible on the Shannonpark r'about, on the NW side.

Also, the new roundabout at the Ringaskiddy end of the Barnahely new road is substantially complete. The contractors are currently installing terracotta-colour cobble-lock (or paving bricks) on the centre circle. Grass and a flower/plant display would have been nicer IMO, but maybe they'll do that yet….

I thought I registered for this last year when it was first mentioned but I’ve received nothing. I just registered again with email addresses from three different domains but didn’t receive any acknowledgments or confirmations. Would you mind posting here when you receive the next edition so I can follow up if I don’t also receive it. TIA.

Barnahely and “prep work” don’t count. We were promised full construction of the motorway element and there has been radio silence.

The contract was signed in late May and the statement at the time was that “Work on the new motorway is expected to get under way in the coming months.” So there is no cause for alarm just yet. It takes time to organise a project team and get all of the logistics underway.

That said, communication in respect of this project has been an abysmal disaster from the outset. The lack of information played into the hands of the objectors and greatly facilitated the credibility of their spurious arguments. Apart from one short paragraph the project page on the Cork RDO website hasn’t changed since 2017.

There's a load of earthmovers on site. Never mind the communications. It's started

This is a big project. The contractor isn’t going to land on the morning after the contract is signed and launch into works hammer and tongs.

Prep works have commenced at the Rochestown Road side. This is a mature residential area where work will have to be undertaken carefully. In addition, earthworks were to commence in June between Barnahely and Shannonpark. This may not always be immediately obvious from the road.

Will it be completed and opened in sections i wonder or complete end to end . Bypassing Shanbally from shannonpark and joining with the now near complete section bypassing Ringaskiddy feels like a more bang for buck to relieve congestion than carrs hill to shannonpark

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 392 ✭✭Mr.CoolGuy

I believe it will be opened in one go. This was told to me by a local TD but he wasn't 100% confident himself in saying that off the cuff.

Anyway today was the first proper day for me seeing work on this, and not just site prep small jobs we've seen over the past few years. There were a lot of machinery working together early this morning

Agree… it’s not a particularly long road (it just seems like it when you’re stuck in the traffic), so opening one bit of it “early” may be more of a problem than it’s worth.

Shannonpark interchange has no Ringaskiddy facing ramps, so would require a temporary tie in ala Macroom for a partial opening.

Would likely be more hassle than its worth.

Great to see such passionate interest in this project!

As I said in my post, a fleet of excavators and earthmovers are now on site. A large part of this project is 'off-line' and is not visible from the existing N28. Those (few) of us who drive the road regularly are posting updates - the contractor has posted one update, and I certainly hope that these will soon arrive weekly, and with more information.

I will post updates as information becomes available.

Contractors are now actually working onsite. There are about a dozen cars in the compound in Shannonpark.

I saw a pair of dump trucks in action to the west of Carr's Hill south of the Board of Works Road and an excavator filling a dump truck and clearing scrub on the eastern side of the Bloomfield Interchange over the past two days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 755 ✭✭✭DylanQuestion

I just drove through Shannonpark Roundabout for the first time in quite a while. There were serious earthworks visible. Even now (6pm) there were still a lot of cars on site and a digger working away

    M28 Cork to RingaskiddyProgress Update

    11th July 2025

We are delighted to announce that BAM have now commenced construction works, with activity well underway at both St. Patrick’s Church in Rochestown and Shannonpark. This marks an exciting step forward for the project, as work moves from preparation into active construction.

Ducting works will commence next week in the St Patrick’s Church area of Rochestown, with localised traffic management in place. Ecology surveys and protection measures are continuing as site clearance works progress.

Tree felling works to commence following ducting works at St. Patricks Church in late July. Traffic management on the N28 will include off-peak lane restrictions to minimise disruption.

BAM have commenced earthworks excavations between Shannon Park and Carr’s Hill. Topsoil stripping will commence between Barnahely and Raffeen in the next week. Consultation with utility companies is ongoing for any remaining planned diversions of existing services.

If there are any queries regarding construction works, you can contact Des Gilsenan, Public Relations Officer for BAM.

Email address for BAM site office - m28queries@bam.com

A dedicated phone line will be available soon.

    Ringaskiddy Urban Realm

Works are continuing across the scheme, with several key elements nearing completion. Road resurfacing through the village will commence in the next fortnight, while footpaths and feature paving are now substantially complete. Street furniture has been installed, helping to shape the look and feel of the upgraded public space. Landscaping works are also continuing throughout the scheme, contributing to a more attractive and welcoming environment for all.

Traffic signals will continue to operate in Ringaskiddy Village, with some parking spaces temporarily lost as a result. Cork County Council will continue to coordinate traffic management with Coffey Construction, endeavouring to keep restrictions to a minimum with traffic queues being monitored continuously to minimise delays and disruption. Where possible, two-way traffic will be maintained.

    Ringaskiddy Relief Road

Significant progress has been made across multiple areas of the project. The Ringaskiddy Roundabout is now substantially complete, with paving works ongoing. In Loughbeg, drainage and excavation works are progressing steadily. Tower Road has been substantially completed and has now reopened to traffic.

As part of the next phase, Old Post Office Road is currently closed to facilitate the construction of a new underpass, with associated utility diversions now underway. Meanwhile, mainline earthworks and drainage continue between Old Post Office Road and Barnahely. Construction of the Barnahely Roundabout has also commenced, marking another key milestone in the delivery of the scheme.
