I was just wondering could anyone recommend a good poetry collection in one book; modern stuff maybe, or just generally good poetry regardless of the genre, thanks

In reply to finding good poetry, anything by Sylvia Plath has always been an inspiration to me! She was a wonderful writer!

    Enjoy! :)

I never really enjoyed Sylvia until my friend got me this mini poetry book selected by Ted Hughes. Love "Insomniac".

Check out Charles Bukowski and Maya Angelou... Not that often recommended together, but they were recommended in the same breath to me and it really influenced my reading! Try ee cummings too. I personally love Oscar Wilde and Edgar Allan Poe's stuff too, but that's probably just me! I'm sure there's better read minds to make better informed recommendations out there! Let me know though :)

Can't say enough good things about this one

    Heya Guys.

First I'll start off by saying that I've always had an interest in writing throughout my life. Last October I started an 8 week night course in Creative Writing at one of the local Secondary School, 2 hours one night a week. In the second week we got the assignment to write a short story or the beginning of a short story. I've always much preferred fantasy and paranormal stories above anything else so I wrote a 2 page beginning about a young woman who wakes up at a funeral, realising by the very end of the story that she is the one who died. I was overwhelmed to receive a lot of postivity at the next cass where I had to read the story aloud, especially since the teacher of the course is a published poet by the name of John Doorty. Anyhow, due to the posiive reactions I got, I decided to keep with the character and make up a back story, what happened after the funeral etc.

This all went well and I continued to receive positive and negative criticism, which I liked, throughout the classes. However, since the class has ended, I have found I have absolutely no motivation to continue writing as I have no weekly deadline anymore.

I was just wondering does anyone know of a way to motivate oneself as I have tried to start 3 or 4 other stories aswell but just get bored or run out of ideas.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know Seamus Heaney's quote on an older man and woman's relationship, where they don't look at one another, but look in the same direction. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I first heard this quote at his birthday celebration in Dunlaoire but haven't been able to remember it or find it since and it is niggling me as I thought it was so profound. Thanks.

    Hi guys

I am just wondering is there an Irish website that tells of all the deadlines for submitting short story competitions etc. I have been to www.iftn.ie and can't seem to find anything. I have some work that I would like to enter into competition. I have found these two.

    Thanks in advance.

    Simple question.

How do you go about getting anything published?

Is it a case of submitting your work and the publisher liking it and wanting to publish it?

    Thanks

Anyone have tips on keeping motivated? I'm writing a book at the moment and although it's going pretty well I find it very hard to force myself to write everyday. I try to but I usually get distracted and give up. I usually only write when I get the urge to but at this rate it will never be finished. So any tips? Thanks in advance

You usually submit to an agent nowadays. Most publishers won't accept unsolicited manuscripts.
You generally write a letter with a synopsis of your book (I'm assuming it's a book :)) and you submit the first few chapters. [Or you write the letter/synopsis and ask the agent if they want to see some chapters. Not sure about this. Have a look at THe Writer's and Artist's Yearbook and they will tell you.]

But be warned, writing the synopsis is an art in itself - a great book with a poorly written synopsis is likely to be ignored, so spend time on it. Good luck!

    hiya all,

i've just started knockin out a few short stories, and invariably whatever i put down has a gritty edge. generally i write dark numbers using plenty of expletives and slang (for which i make no apologies; i'm trying to represent certain milieus realistically).

surely there's a market for this; but would i be wastin my time sendin these stories to your average writing comp/agent/magazine?

are there any irish indie publications or pulp fiction type mags that anyone could recommend?

would be grateful for any tips... cheers lads

    Hi All,

What is the name of that thing where you write a novel in a short space of time- a month or something? I think it was stickied at the time last year but I haven't a clue what to search for...

    Thanks.

I have a question regarding writing styles: Is it possible to create one? After twenty+ years, I have my own style and words that I would tend to use more than others. But how do you go about re-inventing yourself? For example, if you wanted to "ghost-write", can you create a new style or will it be evident to readers who you are?

    Any tips? Thanks!

    🤪

It shouldn't be that difficult to write in an alternative style. Just avoid consciously trying to write not-me style. Obviously, it's a little easier to do this if you're writing from a first person point of view; it just becomes an extension of a character.

Log out from your account, type up your post and hit "submit".

It will be looked at by a mod before it comes up as a new thread/post, just to stop the system from being abused. :)

You can then sign back in and continue posting as normal.

Maybe Jamie Oliver, he's young, has done alot for the unemployed, school children and is very creative.
Or maybe Micahel Eavis who started the Galstonbury Festival.
You could pick John Lennon or Paul MacCartney - both did more than just write amazing songs.
    Bono is an Irish option...
    hope this helps.
