    Hi

I'm wondering, if a person wanted to start up a small farm, with few cattle - what does a person need before they can buy cattle ? Is it just a herd number? I know you'll eventually need Green cert for claiming grants etc , but just to get some stock, do you just need herd number and some cash!!

You will need a herd number if you intend on buying cattle. To get this you will need a working crush (AFAIK a portable crush will not suffice) a shed for shelter and for isolating a sick animal and also that the boundary of the land is fenced well enough to be stock proof. Your local DAFM veterinary officer will come out and inspect before you will be approved. Once the thing is right you will have no problem.

There is a form to be filled and returned to your RVO before you get inspected.

You don't need to do a Green Cert to claim grants.

    Contact the Department

If you have any questions just ring the relevant number of your RVO in the link above. I always found them to be very helpful
