Welcome to Smallholding forum, Tell us a bit about yourself/Smallholding
Great to see this place up and running :) Not much time, so I'll be brief. Our little patch is part of a larger farm, so space is not an issue, but we had 2 Kerry cows. One milking with 8 month old heifer calf at foot. And dry cow due to calf around new years. The calf is separated at night and in morning I hand-milk one…

Will the price / demand for agri land come down over next few years?
So , with dairy farmers in freefall for a while, and the looming mercosur deal, will the price of land come down? I'm looking at marginal- reasonable land, with no real neighbouring or nearby progressive farmers. Do you think farmers will hold off on buying anything a while, and land prices will come down? Please do Poll

New to Smallholding, would like ideas for a blank canvas
Hi all, Many years ago I grew up on a small farm so I have a little better than basic knowledge of farming. But I have now purchased a house on 9acres of average land and I'm looking at setting up a smallholding or hobby farm. For a more self sustainable family lifestyle and an enjoyment for hardship 😉. As this land has…

New Farmer
Hi I'm wondering, if a person wanted to start up a small farm, with few cattle - what does a person need before they can buy cattle ? Is it just a herd number? I know you'll eventually need Green cert for claiming grants etc , but just to get some stock, do you just need herd number and some cash!!

Show Chicken Importing?
I know it's a bit out there, where else to ask? :| I've searched, on line. Found what appears the latest paper. It looks like chickens mean't purely for showing ~ non food chain ~ can come and go, like other pet birds. That's from UK. I'd also be interested in the Continent. Speaking to a couple of people, just keep hens…

Firewood In Plastic Sacks?
What's going on here, lads? My head's wrecked with it! I have a load of old lumber, stored under plastic sheeting. I pull some out and take it to my shed. There, I chop it to stove lengths on my chop saw. I then put the short lengths into plastic feed sacks. Now. clearly, as I'm cutting anything from logs to old roof…

Where can I donate lots of lentils for chickens (etc)?
I have a literal heap of LOTS of just out of date dried lentils and beans (all kinds) unopened and uncooked in their packets to donate to someone with hungry pet critters that would enjoy them. Can't donate them to the Simon friars because they are a bit 'out of date' and so not legal for them to offer to people, but, it…

Right of Access v Right of Way in Ireland
Hey all, Would anyone know what the difference is between a Right of Access and a Right of Way in Ireland. As far as I can see he doesn't have a ROW based…

If I let someone leave his horses on my land will I be liable if they're not properly cared for?
A friend asked me if he could leave his horses on my land. Aside from the fact that my farm is very small and my sheds are not fit for horses, I am a bit worried about landing in trouble if he fails to properly care for the animals while they are left with me Any advice gratefully accepted

Advice on finding plots to rent
I might be on the lookout for a plot to rent, ideally no more than an acre, maybe less even. Its hard because it seems the only options are renting 10s or 100s of acres or get an allotment which may not be large enough and there's none near me. It will be for growing predominantly and possibly mini orchard. All for my own…
