Digiweb SIRO - new modem - Zyxel DX330

Hi y'all. Just coming off a call with Digiweb as they are having a 1gbps fiber to home deal through the SIRO network. Apparently they switched from fritzboxes to a new modem recently, the Zyxel DX3301 which ahs Wifi 6. Has anyone any experience with that modem and can tell me if it works ok?

Read some 2 year old posts on reddit with some people having some problems with it but in another country & provider.

According to Digiweb they found it works better than the fritzbox they had before. Not sure if that's just marketing talk or really the case.

I don’t have experience with the Zyxel but if you already have a Fritzbox yourself you can use that instead or buy your own router and just enter the PPPoE details.

Just read some tests where the Wifi performance is good but not as good as the (twice as expensiv) Fritzbox 7530 AX.

I am currently with Pure Telecom and have a Fritzbox from them - but it's an old non-AX model that has only Wifi 5. But I could potentially get a Wifi 6 modem/router (maybe the 7530 AX?) from Pure Telecom if I stay with them. So just seeing if I go Pure Telecom with Fritxbox or DW with that Zyxel.

Not really wanting to spend 150 euro on that Fritzbox myself. 😅

on the sales call DW stressed the whole - our router is the best in the business and I was/am expecting fritzbox as a result.

@seanin4711 Maybe? Not quite sure. To be fair, they offer 1gbps for 38 for 12 months. Usually they'd offer 6 months for 25 and then 6 months for 60 or something for the 500mbps. So this seems to be a good deal.
Did they not send you the modem/router yet?

I don't know how many of ye are old enough to remember the Motorola Netopia days, now there was a router back in the ADSL1 days that was very hard to beat. Silver one think it was called 22 something but anyway

Rual 4km from exchange 2mb broadband (3mb eircom plan, later Vodafone up to 24mb the line was only 3mb but they sold it as up to by that point)

What arrives is a crappy Zyxel router. 1.4mb maxed out at 1.6mb

I was given a Netopia Eircom router by a friend. 2.2 -2.3mb

Switched to Vodafone. I was given a Huawei router (Remember the one where you could plug in the dongle) an absolutely pathetic 1.3mb

Netopia router cool and Dandy 2.2 to 2.5

Even in the Storm Ophelia I got 2.8mb when everyone else's power was knocked off.

I orded a (now rebranded Motorola) Netopia router from the US. Consistently 2.5mbps until FTTH came in April 2018.

In between those years Eircom and Vodafone sent me a lot of this junk when the line would go down.

I now live in a urban area and am with Siro and use a Fritzbox 7530AX.

This is all to do with costs I reckon. People were trading their Fritzboxes to cex when they left I'd say. Though a lot of them have Prepaypower stickers too in fairness

Its very hard to beat a fritzbox. What Eircom, Vodafone, etc give you is always junk

Bit saddened now that Digiweb have joined the club now. They were always good. I switch provider every year. I'm now with Vodafone siro. Last year virgin media, pure etc

Back home in Germany we had a Zyxel modem for our crappy DSL 768. Been a hot minute tho.

But interesting - as a "serial switcher" I am curious to hear how you go about switching/canceling your services without getting downtime. I am working from home and can't really afford any downtime so I am a bit reluctant when it comes to switching.

Pure Telecom is also switching to the Zyxel - they had the fritzbox 7530 (non AX, which I have atm.). Was happy with it except for the wifi speed.

If you stay on the same access network - Open Eir, SIRO, NBI, Virgin FTTP Wholesale then there won’t be any downtime or cancellation needed. The new provider will just take over once you give them your current provider UAN which should be listed on the bill or you might have to ask for it. It’s called a SIRO account number instead of UAN with SIRO.

That's what I thought - but back when I changed from Vodafone (which was on the OpenEir network back then according to them) to Pure Telecom they had to send a technician and I was without internet for 2 weeks. Interesting.

Yeah that was probably because SIRO was cheaper for Pure Telecom to use, you could have maybe pushed for Open Eir but it would of probably cost more per month. Digiweb do let you choose but again there is different prices for each, SIRO is the cheapest at €38pm for 1Gb.

Once all the access providers available to you are installed at your property though, switching shouldn't be too much of an issue. Cancellation notice is needed when you switch between access networks e.g. Open Eir to SIRO but you can have both running at the same time so there is no downtime in between.

So far I've only been with OpenEir - with both Vodafone & Pure Telecom. SIRO only became available here in the last 6-10 months.

I am currently thinking about taking Pure Telecoms offer of 35/month for 500 (current OpenEir connection) or going to Digiweb with SIRO connection, 1gbps for 38 euro. Both would use the Zyxel Modem.

Pure Telecom also has a new Huawei modem. They couldn't tell me which model it is tho.

Good to know that I won't have downtime. Do you know what the cancellation notices are? Pure Telecom told me today I can cancel anytime.

So you don’t have SIRO installed? Did you not go ahead with Pure Telecom before when they said you needed to have SIRO installed?

You only cancel if you are switching access networks e.g. Open Eir to SIRO. It still has to be when the contract is finished, no matter what, to avoid any early cease charge. You don’t need to give Pure Telecom any notice but Digiweb needs 30 days notice.

If SIRO isn’t installed for you yet, I would give notice to Vodafone, as they need 30 days, and order Digiweb SIRO at the same time so then you’d have lots of time for the installation to take place and to make sure it was up and running before the Open Eir connection was cancelled. You’d have another fibre brought in near your ESB electricity meter with another ONT placed on the wall, they won’t touch your existing Open Eir connection.

I've been with Pure Telecom for 3 years now via the OpenEir Network (before that it was Vodafone via OpenEir). My contract expired a few days ago.

Digiweb would be SIRO. They told me that SIRO would install it within 7-8 work days from the day of ordering. And as you said, they'd go through the ESB pipes and the meter box.

Oh right yeah so you can just order Digiweb SIRO whenever you want, as you don’t need to give notice and your out of contract for Pure Telecom and once Digiweb SIRO is installed and up and running, call Pure Telecom to cancel your Open Eir connection, so you’ll have no downtime.

waiting on zyxel router in the post this week.

yes not happy that the gold standard router- fritzbox is no longer offered as standard but a move to zyxel "as its better on wifi 6 " allegedly .

Anyone on DW with the new Zyxel router? any good/bad/indifferent?

no AX version but regular 7530 for 30 on CEX - jury still out on that Zyxel router =serious speed drop this evening barely 100mbs dl !maybe a restart cache clean needed!

confidence starting to dip already with this router.
