Well that's just your opinion and would be based on your own age. I wouldn't consider someone mid 30's to be "young people"

I remember Oxegen was covered sometimes by MTV, RTE did cover Electric Picnic in 2006 (Friday and Saturday highlights) and from 2014 to 2017 with Jenny Greene and Eoghan McDermott. RTE have covered other events before that too. Both Live Aids, Homelands at Mosely in 1999 and it seems there is footage floating about of some of the Lisdoonvarna festivals in the early 80s as evidenced in Come West Along the Road when featuring trad bands like Planxty and De Danann. Someone mentioned TG4, TG4 have loads of programmes covering events, Night and Day Festival in Roscommon, they used to have a series like RTE's Nationwide called Feilte which covered events around the country such as fleadhs and Electric Picnic was included in that too.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

They covered Live8 back in the day I seem to remember.

RTE would have been buying the host broadcasters feed for that.

They don't have the operational capabilities, or the money to pay someone else for them, to cover Electric Picnic at its current scale.

Yeah, but did the World Cup ever get Paul Weller to launch their new merch?

Yes but obviously they make shows for a larger range than you stated kid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,548 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

I never stated anything on this thread apart from, "Well that's just your opinion and would be based on your own age. I wouldn't consider someone mid 30's to be "young people"

So I'm not sure what the snarky comment and calling me "kid" is about?

As others have said, RTE used to cover EP for a few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74,024 ✭✭✭✭L1011

And I said "at its current scale". Also, RTE had a lot more money in the past.

They cannot provide coverage of it now, at least not coverage that wouldn't cause mass complaints about how crap it was.

Wouldn't any more than any outside broadcast to cover. Any GAA match,Rose of Tralee etc. Plus they'd get ad revenue.

It would cost many, many multiples of that as they would need to cover more than one stage. Ad revenue would not come close to covering the costs.

Basic coverage of one stage would lead to moans on here that you could hear in Stradbally.

It shouldn't have to make money or break even covering costs with advertising.

It's an important musical event and should be covered.

If RTE want to stay relevant they need to appeal to their younger audience.

I can't be there but would love the visuals to go with the sound. The next best thing to being there

Maybe I imagined it, but didn't RTE show Woodstock, the 90's revival, with lots of boobs on display?

    🙈🙉🙊

I haven't read most of the above so sorry for being late to the thread a few things and I will start with "in fairness to RTÉ"

    1. RTÉ from both commercial and public service points of view may decide not to broadcast event like these.
    2. The promoters of Electric picnic may not want the event to be broadcast or streamed live
    3. The artists may have in their contracts that the organizers may not record, stream or broadcast their set

I am sure RTÉ can come up with a few more "in fairness to themselves" however …

This idea that RTÉ could not afford the costs associated with such a broadcast is BS, I am open to correction on a few of the following: -

    1. The broadcast rights will be for an Irish audience not a British audience so the cost of such rights would be much lower, however I suspect but I could be wrong that the music rights held through RTÉ blanket rights for music on TV and Radio that they pay each year, would cover them for the music, however Electric picnic would possible ask for payments for rights, I don't know how much that would cost, but it would be allot less than Glastonbury.
    2. The cost of the staff would be the same for any live event and RTÉ have in the past brought many events to the nation so that I think is a moot point.
    3. What else have they to show on RTÉ2, largely speaking outside of sport RTÉ2 is a waste land of TV
    4. RTÉ know how to spend the money when they want, and RTÉ are not wanting.*

    That's my tuppence.

And final I believe 2FM will be at a number of events this summer. A waste land of Radio that seems to be both commercial and public service at the same time.

*In august of 2022 RTÉ spent €70k on an event in the RDS to announce their new schedule for 2022/2025, in 2016 Dee Forbes was given a moving fee of €50k though she lived in Cork and commuted to London for her last job, Jon William was given flights to NYC as part of his contract so that he could go to 3 meetings per year relating to his work with "Committee to Protect Journalists", Dee Forbes splurged on a stand up table and a new office when she arrived in, oh all of their executives get €20k to €25k in car allowances …. you know add all this shite up you might get to broadcast EP on RTÉ2.

But as I say in fairness to RTÉ they do some good sports and news programming 🙄

They did cover one of the festivals. Possibly Punchestown or Fairyhouse. I remember it because the audio on one the stages was appalling and I think there was a caption on screen apologising for it.

The thing is…if they did show it, would the younger people even watch it? Anyone interested might only watch clips that were uploaded to TikTok or wherever, since the majority probably don't watch RTÉ. Even a lot of older people claim not to have watched RTÉ in decades, the "So why should I pay for the TV licence?!?"-types so they wouldn't either..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,841 ✭✭✭RoTelly

It's not just about "young people" and also as a public service broadcaster RTÉ should be trying to attract a younger audience.

There are plenty of "artists" playing EP that are nostalgic.

the older people that say they haven't watched RTÉ in decades "so why should I pay" have largely been proven right over the last decade, RTÉ and their teams were unable and unwilling to run a broadcast services.

EP news and clips could be put out across social media etc etc etc.

Anyway I have no interest in EP, I am not all that young, and I watch RTÉ only out of interest to see what they are doing. I rest easy knowing that they could easily put EP on RTÉ2 and still no one would watch RTÉ2 outside of sport, but at least they'd be producing something.

Very hard to defend much of what RTÉ do, or do not do.

Leave RTE alone. How can they repeat Reeling in the Years and killinaskully for the thousand time if they have to do something new.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,833 ✭✭✭pah

EP should broadcast on YouTube 🤷‍♂️

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,663 ✭✭✭recyclops

Say what you want about RTE but dont go bashing reeling in the years its a fantastic 30 mins of television regardless of how often its shown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,841 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Maybe the 60, 70 and 80s but they've been to quick to produce 2010s and 2020s, should have left them until now.

But what's wrong with repeats of Killinaskully? Best comedy RTÉ have ever produced … checks note, yes seems to be the case! … not that that is saying much!

    Finally some sense in here.

Young people are just not consuming media the same way any more.

If a state broadcaster wants to appeal to young people, it needs to adapt to the mediums they use.

If EP want to have it on YouTube then that is one option, but it is unlikely that they do, would the streams be limited to Ireland? how much in revenue would it garner for the EP promoters?

I don't consume media in the same way any more, but the state broadcaster isn't even streaming their news channel on YouTube or any streaming service but their own.

As I say there is a balance, between service younger audiences and older ones. RTÉ have broadcast stations that they stream on their player surely they should use those services as much as social media.

It isn't the platform its the content, RTÉ I agree should be platform neutral when it comes to content.
