I cant really lose the stuff I have on the machine as it doubles as a business PC aswell as gaming.

Any disk drive can fail at any time, and over a long enough time-frame all disks are guaranteed to fail. If you don't have backups, you will lose your data at some point

Need another small bit of help - turns out that I dint actually "need" a bios update - board has a bios that already supports the newer CPU- However to use Smart access memory I will need to do a bios update from say version 2.7 to 4.1 so does that change the order of the way I should upgrade.Latest bios is 10.10 - should I just go to the latest - the board doesnt need to have incremental bios updates.

BTW-Ive backed up everything that I needed to an external dedicated drive thats going to be locked away safely and not used for anything else.

No, the BIOS image is a complete one, they're not incremental. So you just need the most recent.

Thanks spear - I built this back in 2019 - the 1700x was a decent cpu back then (still runs everything I can throw at it today) but its not supported by Win 11 - thats my only reason for the upgrade. I hate doing bios updates - theres always a fear of it going arseways - think I remember you helped me out before way back probably 10-15 years ago when I was more active in the BF forum.

Anyway thanks again for the help everyone.
