Paypal - is it still popular?

Are people still using Paypal for purchases regularly? I have not used Paypal since 2019. With the plethora of payment options now and their lower fees, I thought it would be in decline or disappearing. I cannot see any references about it anywhere, or any Ireland-aimed transaction promotions.

All the time, everyone still accepts it and I try to keep the number of companies who have my actual cards details on file to a minimum. I always assumed that was the prime purpose of having PayPal so you're not spraying your card details all over the web.

Didnt see the need to sign up with Google or Apple pay yet. I assume thats what you mean with other payment options?

Stupid question somewhat related: I have my card(s) in my phone wallet (Apple). Does that mean I have Apple Pay already? I actually dont know.

As for the fees, I dont really care too much cos the seller usually has to take care of those.

As for private sales like adverts its probably more revolut these days.

Haven't used it in years. Used to be the only game in town when buying online, seems to have been surpassed in this country at least - think its predominant business is still the US

I still use it, but not as much. If paying from an unfamiliar website and they accept Paypal, I will always use it. If not, I use the Revolut disposable card. I also use it for sending USD$ to my nephew in the States.

Use it for all Chinese purchases, and any I'm unsure of elsewhere.

    I still use it.

It's a good reliable service that I've never had any problems with.

I use it occasionally. Rarely with eBay. Sometimes with Ali. A colleague from Italy send me PayPal money for a meal 2 weeks ago. I actually have a PayPal card!

Yep still use it, I have a Revolut account but only used it once ,I had to transfer the money from my bank to the Revolut account first, wait for clearance then I could make payment,.With PayPal I don't have to do this it's taken from my debit card straight away, unless I set the Revolut account up wrong.

Always use it when it's available as it's still the handiest and safest way to buy online.

What lower fees? The seller pays the fees, I've never seen any discount offered for not using it, the price is always the same regardless of payment method so why not, great added buyer protection with the 180 days dispute time allowance compared to the hassle of trying to do a chargeback on a card.

Personally it's a must for Ali, Temu, eBay etc and actually less hassle and safer than firing in card details everywhere. I have one dedicated Revolut virtual card for PayPal that's only unfrozen for a purchase so about as safe as I can make it.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

    It's making a comeback

Most online stores now offer a paypal payment option and a lot offer express checkout with it, I.e. it takes your paypal details for billing and shipping info

I've used it a lot more in the last six months than I would have in the years before it

For websites with revolut pay I'll choose that first because you can use your rev points to get a discount

You've something wrong with your Revolut account. I can transfer money in, either from my bank account or Google wallet, and it is available straight away.

I always use it if the option is there, great if there is a problem as once you are in the right it's easy enough get a refund.

There was a great perk there for a while but gone now where you could get 4 free returns a year, great option if having to return stuff outside the country especially.

Always check to see if there is a PayPal option for any new seller I'm buying from. Wouldn't be using Temu if I couldn't pay by PayPal.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Paypal is a mature financial institution at this stage and like most in that class the growth rates are not there, nor the interested in going down that road. It's very much a case of concentrating on profitability now over growth.

From some of the reports I have seen there seems to be three very strong type of customers:

    • Those who continuously use EBay to turn over their household goods and clothing. It's more of a choice of a total system of operation rather than an individual element. A few of my friends (in their 60s!!!) are big into this way of living…. it's not at all unusual to arrive at their house to discover they sold the living room furniture and bought something different
    • And the other being those of us (including myself) that don't what to disclose our financial details to may of the less well known businesses. I recently got flyers in the post based on an address from 20+ years ago. The company went bust at least a decade ago, but the data is still floating around (I only realised the source because they mentioned the old email address in the flyer!).
    • Their normal run of the mill customers

I avoid it as much as possible. Had dealings with them where they froze my account after transferring money between two accounts, as per their instructions. Took a year to get my money back from them.

Id say so ,but you still have to transfer the money in as with PayPal I don't have to . it's directly taken from my account, so what are the benefits with Revolut over PayPal.

I only used it for eBay. Or adverts. Revolut replaced it for local trades. Stopped using eBay, so stopped using PayPal years ago.

I could be wrong but eBay and Paypal seem to have a poor reputation in resolving disputes. So I never used it for large amounts.

But yeah, not to do any serious purchases with.

Have to say, I've had the complete opposite experience.

I still use PayPal for the reasons already mentioned and have definitely had purchases where there was a surcharge for using it in some instances.

Don't use it enough, to know. But these enough thread about it on the internet to make me cautious. Perhaps they've improved. I might start using it and ebay again since Amazon are so bad.

Haven't used eBay since Brexit, used to get free delivery on alot of items, no longer.

With Revolut they can only scam as much as you load to your account, with PayPal they can scam your actual account.

I use PayPal where I don't wish to share credit card details and due to the "protections" which supposedly come as part of PayPal not being reliably honoured by Paypal I use it for small transactions where I can afford to not receive the item I paid for. It has its uses.
