Think Coltsrt had a mini rant about that earlier in the day, saying exactly that and double eagle is just an Americanism that makes no sense

Quick rules question - Scheffler was in the bunker just there with an awkward stance on a slope.

He buried his feet in to the stand as you might do for a bunker shot but he then stood back out of his stance to take another look at the green.

I thought that once you took your stance and buried your feet you had to then take your shot because he was essentially testing the consistency of the sand during his first stance which would give him a read on the texture and compactness of the bunker.

Or an I misrembering the rules?

Touching the sand with your hand or a club to test the condition of the sand is not allowed. You can touch the sand with your hand or club to remove a loose impediment.

There is not, and never has been to the best of my knowledge, any rule about your feet in a bunker.

Decent opening round, enjoying the challenge of the course, I don't think it's a joke or anything, just very unforgiving.

I'm quite happy to see Scheffler 7 back. I get he's in great form, and that he's so solid, but the idea that this was his to lose is just very naïve talk for a US Open.

Initial weather reports had suggested Late/Early was favourable; Lawrence went 3 under on 10-18 late whereas McIlroy was 6 over for the same. So if that holds true a few players such as Koepka (who has better US Open credentials than most) and Rahm are in good positions.

Massive kudos to Spaun though, the only bogey-free round yesterday - he scrambled well the few times he had to.

I've never heard that about the feet in the bunker. You do see it the odd time on the tour, especially if they're in a particularly hard green side bunker with no view of the flag. They'll often take 2 or 3 trips in and out to double check their alignment.

Scottie and Rory are still serious contenders for this. Spaun and Lawrence won't be there at the end of this tournament. There's a sports washer at -2 and another at -1 along with Ben Griffin whose one of the hottest golfers on the planet right now.

Scottie is only five back of the highest up realistic contender and Rory six back. They need to have decent rounds today and they are very serious contenders.

I think level par will be an excellent score today.

There was a light breeze and dry weather last night and it stayed warm all night.

There is zero chance of rain today, only thing that might happen is a brief thunderstorm late in the day, and that's a dry one with no moisture. Temperature is expected to hit around 25 and rising early in the day.

The greens being hard will make this a horrific test. I'd guess they'll be playing it a lot like links golf.

The rough is horrific and with hard fairways some drives that look good will end up in it.

Most places are expecting rain for most of the weekend. Maybe not large quantities, but enough to soften the place a bit. Could make the greens easier, but the rough would be savage if wet

Could be wrong , but don't see Rory contending ..head still doesn't seem right.

he mixed the sublime with utterly bizarre in true Rory fashion. The fifth shot on the par 5 and putt were unreal. even the putt on the last hole was a great try for birdie just wouldn't drop.

Rain on Saturday and Sunday but not today. It's showing 0% chance of rain until 7pm over there and only a slim chance before 10pm.

Tomorrow a 50/50 chance from around 12.30pm their time.

JT has decided it's over for him

Missed a short putt then didn't even look at the next one and missed it again, had about the same distance for the third one and didn't look at it either but holed it for a four putt.

When you look at his results in this tournament over the last five years you cannot rule him out. 8th in 2020, then 7th, 5th and runner-up the last two years.

I had some work to do and missed a few holes and the leading sportswasher had three consecutive bogeys. I'd have got great enjoyment out of seeing that but delighted anyway.

Scottie is really struggling, three bogeys in his last five holes. He had an early birdie and it looked like he was going to make a move but he's been scrambling ever since.

His player partner, Viktor Hovland, is having a great round, -4 for the day and one behind the lead.

Nobody does the "OMG I hit the perfect putt how could it have missed that way" pose quite like Rahm

WeWell if you ever want to answer the question how hard is Oakmont, the answer is "it made Scottie angry and do a club smash".

Smash in the lightest sense it was so restrained

    hole in one from Perez

Watch out for Ben Griffin later on. Outside of Scottie he's been the most impressive player over the last month. 8th in the PGA, won the Charles Schwab and second in the memorial are his last three results.

Great round for Burns, I'm shouting for him and Griffin as my other favourites are well back.

I don't fancy burns at all. Would be shocked if he shoots less than 74 tomorrow

Would like to see Hovland win. His game might be too erratic to avoid the doubles though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,782 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

He lost in a playoff last week. Two top tens, two top 20s and a 30th in his last five tournaments.

He's coming back from an awful run of form for two years. He'll have a chip on his shoulder with everything he's went through and the playoff loss last week.

He's the best putter on tour, so long as he keeps it on the fairway he's a serious contender.

I see on RTE News that Rory has double bogeyed the opening hole today. Exactly the opposite start that he needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,292 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

What am I watching? What was that from Lowry in the bunker on 2? You wouldn't even see an amateur play a shot so bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,292 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Lowry double bogeys the 2nd hole. So did Rose. McIlroy made par.

2 holes plays and all 3 of the group have made double bogeys already.

    Another double for mc, 6, 4 , 6 start

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,358 ✭✭✭Trampas

Rory and Shane be onto r&a making sure they’re not paired again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,470 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

He's always been good at the week to week tour stops. His major record is poor and I expect that to continue. I wouldn't be backing him anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,470 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

They should nearly pre-order a few scoops for the halfway house at this stage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,367 ✭✭✭blackcard

Rory is gone at this stage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,292 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

    Shane makes his first par today at the 5th. (5, 6, 5, 6, 4)
