Pixel 6 died without warning. Working one minute and a few minutes later, nothing, dead as a dodo.

With a trip to Paris coming up in three days, I couldn't be without a phone (Revolut, boarding passes, car key, navigation, various activity bookings, day ticket to Disney… absolutely everything is on the phone these days!).

Thanks to this thread, I bought a lyca eSim and ordered the 9a yesterday. Delivery expected tomorrow. I really wanted to go to S24 Ultra at some stage, but 9a will do just fine, I think. Fingers crossed it gets here tomorrow so that I have some chance of getting essential apps configured in.

Can anyone who bought the Pixel 9a from Vodafone confirm if the 'OEM unlocking' option in Developer Settings is greyed out? I'm also trying to check if the phone is carrier locked.

That switch just means that the bootloader can be unlocked and custom firmware can be flashed, it doesn't have anything to do with carrier locking.

Pixels are virtually always carrier unlocked. If these were locked, it would've been posted about by now.

Also, it's not locked. I just tried it, it asked me to enter the PIN, gave me a warning about doing it, and then i cancelled it before going through with it, but I imagine it wouldn't have let me get that far if it was disabled.

    PSA

Whatever cheap/free SIM you get to port call the number and send yourself a call me from the same number so it has both messages/call made and received activity.

My 6A is fecked so decided to check this bargain alerts on a pixel deal, this looked ideal but out of stock since this morning. Any one have any ideas if more coming into stock or they all gone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 868 ✭✭✭ECookie13

Usually with Vodafone phone offers like these, if I recall, they often come in and out of stock frequently. I guess they maintain low stock levels on the website so as not to oversell.

Did not get this email, sounds like they are cracking down on the Lyca deal.

Top up by 20 or else what? They'll cancel your Vodafone account? Sure you won't be using it anyway.

Reading the contract it says this:

    Contract Renewal and Termination
Conditions for renewal and termination: You may terminate this Agreement by giving at least 30 days notice or by completing the Porting process. Unlocking Device: You must have topped up your account by at least € 120 credit to request your unlock code.

I understand that these devices are not network locked. And there's no obligation to remain with Vodafone (at least past the first 30 days, according to this contract).

In case of a warranty repair / device fault - I am hoping we can go direct to Google than going to Vodafone (which is what is happening with my daughters Pixel 6a at the moment, fingers crossed Google will continue supporting these devices).

No, the phone is arriving tomorrow, just wondering if I'm stuck in some sort of contract.

I think it's ok though I don't have to top up the sim or anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 162 ✭✭halfpastneverr

No contract and phone isn't locked to a network. It's a contractless payg deal. I picked mine up from VF store and never even inserted or topped up VF sim that came with it. Lady in the shop didn't even ask either.

I upgraded the phone and must say the battery on the 9A is quite a bit better than on the 8A. I got 204 cash from CEX for the 8A. There was not a scratch on it though, looked pristine.

    Phone ordered. Great bargain alert!

    Q. Do you have to cancel auto top up ? The 'contract' says there is an auto top up but unsure whether you have to activate it

Thanks for the heads up. Got one for myself and one for the wife. Now I need to figure out what to do with two 180 euro Google store vouchers :(

Would they not bump you up to an A grade? As it looks to be €204 for the B grade. I guess CEX is getting very stingy on their gradings these days.

I just ordered a 9a myself since the 8a’s battery has completely gone to the dogs recently (phone is less than a year old) and it’s overheating often. Still a solid all-rounder though. Seems to be the Pixel way after 6–12 months, so I’m pretty much expecting the 9a to go the same road unfortunately 😂

Cex is very stingy indeed when it comes to giving A grade- I think you need to sell them a sealed box. I delivered mine in the box with all original accessories unused, but obviously the phone was used for a year or so, so no way getting anything better than B grade. In fairness they are also selling it as B grade- just checked 😎.

I can't complain though, €60 depreciation for 15 months use + the cost of a case and screen protector, which needed renewal anyway.

just ordered the 9a for my wife as well today- got DPD message an hour later, delivery tomorrow.

Mine is the same. 8a bought from a deal here. Battery has very recently gone from lasting a day (100-50% or so the next morning) to needing charging twice a day.

I've also noticed the overheating too. its managed to warp an otterbox phone cover.

Also seen a number of OS updates recently too….so I reckon they know theres a problem but are trying to fix it.

I guess i'll be buying a 9a and selling my 8a to CEX too!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 654 ✭✭✭rtron

Mine arrived today thanks this thread 🎉

Wonder if Cex would buy my 6a...

    word of warning

I received my 9a today, the minute it was signed for my phone ported over.

I now have no network, customer care is useless, and need me to go to a store. I cannot activate my esim as I cannot receive my OTP code via text as I have no network.

when I get to a store tomorrow, I will get it activated and switch again straight away. Vodafone customer service is beyond useless.

I've ordered the eSim, got the QR code, activated the eSim….but in the Phone Number section it says Unknown…..how do I give VF a phone number to port? Did I set it up wrong?

    EDIT-number just came through!

Did I read somewhere that this deal is finished tomorrow???Also, anyone know how much CEX might give for a Pixel 7a?Says online that they'll give €150 for A rated and €130 for B rated. Mine is in top condition but they'll still only give it a B rating I'd say.

Do you have the box and all the accessories/cables with the phone? Is there any damage at all on the phone? If you have all the accessories and there is no damage at all, you should get A condition. Don't take my word for it though.

Anyone got a case recommendation for the phone?
