Dealz have them. Larger Tescos have them as well but usually at a high price unless discounted.

Usually any newsagent, Tesco or garage or such has them.

What caddy do you have that needs a separate usb power. Usually they pull the power from the port or in the past a Y cable they pulls from two usb ports.

Ah Usb A to Usb A.

I doubt you'll get one. Maybe one of those gadget shops but it will be dire quality. Probably not good enough for 1A.

I was shown one in a phone shop for 15 euro ,he took 10 minutes to find one in the stock room eg most cables are now USB a to USB c. .the cable was 15 euro so I just bought a new 2.5 inch Sata caddy. That came with a cable and manual the manual is not in English

It shows a photo. Caddy plugged into laptop

Label says. Caddy 2.5 inch Sata up to 1 Tb drive compatible

I used to have a box full of USB a. cables years ago before USB c was invented

    Caddy cost 25 euro

He showed me 3 USB cable.s of various kinds they looked good it's a phone/ computer tech shop

I must have had a thousand usb cables through my hands over the years. I'd say I've only seen Usb A-A about 4 times. It's its usb 2.0?

HDD's caddy's required additional power. Later models/SSD should have enough power by one USB cable.
Get new enclosure - would be same/similar price as getting just cable for outdated one you have

True my USB C 2.5 enclosures were about €19 delivered.

I read up on this some drives require more power , eg 550 mma 2.5 inch sata, it,s shown on the drive label, 500ma 0r 500 ma power input this caddy only works on 5v, 500 ma from a usb port.

standard pc usb =5v,500 ma output

theres millions of devices out there that rely on usb a to usb cables ,as theres millions of pcs running windows 7 even if its technically redundant and insecure if connected to the internet. Poor countrys like cuba cannt afford to throw away all the old pcs and buy new ones that are windows 10 compatible with the lastest cpu,s and 16gig ram.

eg label might say 5v dc, o.55 A

What's the make and model of the enclosure also the disk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭thereiver

Hoco enclosure sata to micro b, HB46

Label 6TB 2.5 inch sata maximum support plug and play front label

    back label

    Usb 3.0 5gbps

includes usb A to Micro B cable

    i plugged it in

it does not appear in Windows control panel hardware storage ,

drive says toshiba 5v 1amp 640gig toshiba MG6465GSX on the drive label

its not going to work in a 500 ma enclosure

my other caddy is rated 1amp 5v but i,d need to buy a usb a to a cable to connect it to a usb my 1 amp usb a power supply

That's seems to be a very old drive. Did you pull it out of an old laptop? Google suggests its 10yrs+ old?

I would suggest sticking that in a Desktop Computer or a powered 3.5" Enclosure. Copy the information off it.

What do you want it for?

it has no info on it , i cant even remember when i got it, i dont know if its working .theres no data on it thats of any use to me ,if it works i,ll format it to use as a spare drive for backup .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,886 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I would not use that drive for backup. It's likely to fail. It's too old.

And as you've found it uses too much power for most usb ports.

Im going to buy a more up to date drive that uses 5v 500 ma power eg I presume it,ll work in the caddy I bought today

    Probably better.

Might be cheaper to just buy external drive that's already in a case. Or external SSD. CEX have used ones with warranty.

i bought an external drive usb 500 gig it shows up in device manager and devices /printers ext usb drive 500 gig

theres 3 partitions 200 meg gig 1st, allocated ntfs ,490 gig approx ntfs allocated , the last partition is 200 meg unallocated , it doesnt show up as drive 500gig under drive c

eg i cant copy files , i think i have to format the last partition as 200 meg allocated .

if anyone has advice post here .eg i want to be able to copy files to the drive

i plugged it in it says scan drive usb 500 gig eg pc is windows 7

An external shouldn't appear as C drive.

You should be able to delete the partitions and reformat the drive. Use "Disk Management."

"...To open Disk Management, right-click (or long-press) the Start button and select Disk Management..."

Be careful you don't format your C: Drive or delete the C drive partitions.

    I already did that

yes I use to build PCs years ago. Disk c is the main boot disk which contains the os windows

the external drive should show up as disk e disk d is the dvdrom drive

It shows up in control panel hardware storage as disk 1 500 gig

Also devices printers. As 500gig USB drive external

Partition 1 ntfs 200 meg allocated partition 2 490giig approx ntfs allocated

    Partition 3 UNNOCALLATED.

Should I format last part 200gig to nfs

Or should I download mini partition manager free and remove all active partitions and start again eg format all partition s in ntfs

Two 200 meg partitions with partition 2 as 499 gig partition ntfs

Should I delete all the partitions and start over in partition manager or control panel hardware storage management ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭thereiver

Of course I won't do anything to drive c

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,388 ✭✭✭smuggler.ie

your worded descriptions are … em… hard to understand, just post screenshot of your disk manager with drive attached to computer.
What disk you purchased? make/model/link if possible
    What OS you running?

    windows 7 , 500 external usb drive, Verbatim 53029

    drive c DISK o,

    Disk 1. 467.5 gig

200meg partition 1 healthy EFI system Part

    465 gig healthy Primary partition

    128meg partition unallocated

    OS windows 7

drive c boot drive windows os 3 partitions healthy

Should i use minitool partition manager to remove all partitions and start again

or should i just format 128meg the 3rd partition thats unallocated

eg it just says 128 meg partition unallocated

the Drive shows up in devices ,as usb drive 500 meg external USB 3.0 drive

around 4.20 pm i posted some questions here i was in a hurry so i had to type my posts as quickly as i could as i was meeting someone at 4.40 pm

I would completely erase the drive, all the partitions and start new.

Windows 7 is old. It doesn't play nice with modern file systems and partitions. It's a bad idea to be using it.
