Assume this will be like Mario Kart world and won't be playable on original switch?! Damn you Santa for bringing the switch in December, why didn't you wait one more year?! Stupid Santa

Does anyone think this game will have some traditional platforming elements to the gameplay such as challenging jumps and sequences, puzzles etc or will it just be smash your way through to the end of each level while digging for bananas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,116 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Seems to have been made by the same team as Mario Odyssey, so I'd imagine there will be a lot of platforming and they really haven't played their cards yet on what's available in the game.

But, just wait and see the reviews when it's released.

I have this pre-ordered but sad that it isn't quite a launch title, some four weeks later.

    Still, looking forward to it.

I'm very tempted to pick up Cyberpunk though, but it is pricey compared to the versions available on my other devices.

I don't think it makes sense to get 3rd party games on Nintendo hardware if you can play them much better and cheaper elsewhere. It does look like CP is superbly optimized for Switch 2, and it all comes on the cartridge (sans patches). And you can play it handheld of course. CDPR know if they get it right, it'll be a constant seller for the lifetime of Switch 2.

One selling point for the Switch 2 version of Cyberpunk is the fact it's got cross save/progression so you can play the other versions at home and then just use Switch 2 on the go.

Though wonder how it would work with mods, such as character creation mods. Does it somehow keep the character appearance or do you get a default character. Do you ever actually see the character? I guess there are mirrors.

It does. At least from the time I got to play the opening level it has those kind of challenges and puzzles. Pretty sure also some Bananas that I would have to come back to later with new skills or abilities.

I wonder if they will throw in some Nintendo specific items, a sword from Xenoblade, the tablet device from breath of the wild

I hate stuff like that because it breaks the "universe" the game is in and takes me out of the game. And feels like product placement. Astro bot on PS is like that. And then there was Zelda stuff in Skyrim on the Switch.

Same with the Mercedes car in MK8, looks crap and out of place.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,811 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Astrobot doesn't really count, it is pure Playstation fan service, all about it's heritage as a gaming platform.

Pity Nintendo hasn't followed suit, given it's even longer history in the business.

Man Nintendo do this all the time, just a bit more classier than astrobot which kind of came across a bit desperate at times. I mean the PlayStation line was amazing but doesn't really have the nostalgic clout of Nintendo. Sure Mario 3D world and Odyssey were chock full of call backs to nintendo's past.

That certainly looks like a huge improvement over the last reveal. Nintendo showing Sony who rules the platforming roost. They really know how to make gameplay and art out of the most bizarre things. I think it's 'cause the designers are free to experiment for as long as they want, and stuff that doesn't make it into this game for time or technical reasons will be in a future game. Because the designers mostly never leave Nintendo, they'll eventually see good ideas surface somewhere, even if they have to wait 10+ years.

I'm having a hard time getting into Astrobot, even though I enjoyed the free pack in game a lot. Played a few hours of it and it's technically very good, but not grabbing me much. Also, I think Astrobot's move set is very restricted compared to Mario. I'll get back to it at some stage. Also, the Sony product placements leave me cold. I joined the PS bandwagon with PS5 so I've zero PS nostalgia.

I have the game pre-ordered but I have yet to watch the Direct.

It really looks fantastic. Like proper Nintendo quality platformer.

I wonder if they will add the switch 2 games to the voucher scheme or will there be a separate voucher scheme?

Nintendo Life just confirmed that DKB was developed by the Mario Odyssey team.

Going to be a cracker. Nobody makes games like Nintendo EPD and even the best imitators like astrobot don't quite reach that level of polish. Takahashi Tezuka turns everything he touches to gold.

€80 seems very expensive for the physical game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,116 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

If it's as good as Mario Odyssey, 3D World and Super Mario Galaxy, then that price will be more digestible. Still, it's very expensive. You can get it cheaper from Amazon France. Or, if you don't want to hold onto it, you can play it and then sell to CEX.

I'll wait until I've run down my current backlog and get it sometime in the future or if there is a rare sale or 3 games for the price of 2 type deal. But, I think Nintendo are firmly now in money grab mode.

I note its on the Smyths French store for €65 and amazon for €60.

French VAT is 20%, compared to 23% in Ireland so that would work out under €2.

Hard to understand why Nintendo are ripping us off so hard in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,116 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

I'd say they've done the numbers and that's the price they can maximize revenue here.

Edit ... Amazon Germany is also 80 quid, so maybe Nintendo is afraid of French consumers.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,756 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Higher costs of living in Ireland and Germany so I guess they think they can fleece us.

Really wish they would add the switch 2 games to the voucher scheme to take the sting out of the price of purchase.

There are previews out now for this. And it's absolutely stuffed full of good stuff. I'd say it'll top Odyssey. They've used the extra power of Switch 2 to add a whole new range of gameplay options and combinations rather than just improving the graphics.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 11,214 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Said I wasn't going to pay 80 quid for a Switch 2 game unless it was the Odyssey successor - might have to break that rule for this game. 😁 Watched Skill-Up's preview video and the game looks great - tons of collectables and content in it - and the smashing mechanic doesn't look as annoying as I initially thought it would be. He mentioned some issues with frame-rate but hopefully it's no dig deal. Will wait for reviews but leaning towards getting this one.

Mario Odyssey had a few bum worlds in it to be honest. There was an ugly and boring food based world, and a weird short dragon boss world for example. New Donk City was kinda ugly too. It was a kind of hodge podge of art styles which I didn't like so much.

I initially got that feeling from this game, but from previews it's looking a lot better... definitely helps that the artists have a higher resolution to work with.

BUT ... For me it still doesn't quite have the crispness and beauty of Super Mario Galaxy or 3D World. But I'm avoiding looking at too much so as not to spoil things.

    I hope it's got a stellar soundtrack.

And I hope there are a load of 2D levels for an extra bit of variety. Odyssey had some of that but it was only a nod to the older games. I hope this game has full on Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze kinda stuff.

For the price, I'm expecting all of that. 😁 In definitely waiting for reviews and I can wait anyway cause I've a load of other stuff to play and finish.
