Sure, we can retake the theory test and driving test every year when time comes to renew car insurance. After passing, we should be made to put a sign in the car, DTRP - driving test refreshed and passed.

They really are a joke shop of a party. The problem is not people not knowing the rules, it’s that too many are not of the want to adhere to them and the deterrents / enforcement levels are not significant enough.

Can you imagine the expense involved, tens of millions to set up new test centres to cope with demand, hundreds more staff.

Bacik just is determined to float further away from the real world here and the concerns and needs of the average Irish person, everyday.

Yes. It would not be a problem to any driver who should be on the road.

You could have more places to do the test, perhaps have them in schools on Saturdays or that kind of thing.

Of course people know the rules and deliberately ignore them, so this is not a substitute for enforcement.

The price for the theory test is outlined on the citizens information site as well as mentioned on the RSA site. I presume nobody will be providing the service wherever it is for the public, free gratis.

So many motorists do not know the rules of the road, what certain signs or road markings mean. A refresher theory and rules test would be of enormous benefit to these drivers and road safety.

However a test would suggest that a person may fail.

If they fail and need to re-book what happens if there is a backlog ?

Imagine the disruption to someone's life if they were suddenly put off the road.

Many depend on the car to get to work, get shopping, take kids to school etc.

Send people a reminder 6 months before the 10 years, no need for anyone to be put off the road. Have lots of testing centres to prevent backlogs.

Their licence has not expired. It is a condition of the renewal that they have passed the theory test in the last 6 months. What do you propose, not having a test at all because if you did people might fail it?

As for testing centres, as I said above you could have tests in every school every Saturday, all you need is an invigilator and a some computers.

Most people know the rules of the road but they choose to ignore them.

Our accidents are generally caused phones, alcohol/drugs, speed, general reckless driving, etc.

Doris who never leaves Dingle mixing up a contra flow and a with flow bus lane isn't a massive issue.

There are ways to do this month's ahead of a deadline and this avoid an off the road situation due to leaving too late. Of course if driving is so important, the driver should prioritise any action to keep their cert of competentency up to date. If it's left to the last minute, an off the road scenario after a fail would be difficult to avoid.

But how do you get over the fact that a state appointed tester has judged someone to be unfit to drive but they let them drive on ?

With the majority of faults you can drive out of an NCT centre and still have a vaild NCT until it expires.

I may not have been clear...driver must have passed a new theory test by X date (say renewal of 10yr licence ) and needs this new cert to get a new licence. No pass, no licence to drive.

As a responsible driver, they know they need to have it for their licence renewal, so they do not leave it to the last minue.

The onus is fully on driver (as a adult) to keep themselves qualified to drive, just like they have to renew tax, insurance, and if/and as applicable their NCT, to stay on the road.

I'm saying that a test is a bad idea because any meaningful test by definition will have a failure rate.

The consequences of allowing someone who has been judged unfit to drive remain in the road are enormous.

Anyone who has a clean driving record and passes a health/eyesight test should be allowed to renew their licence.

I think being judged unfit to drive is more akin to "Fail Dangerous" where they put a sticker on the car and you have to get it towed away.

Yes, because they have a valid licence up to its expiry, and it has not being revoked by a competent court. The purpose of the test is for licence renewal.

This is actually incorrect, if a car does an NCT early and fails the previous cert is no longer valid, they won't stop you driving away, but the car no longer has a valid roadworthiness certificate.
