My neighbour's dog bit me

I don't know where to post it. I just left a house and this Cocker Spaniel just bit me coming from behind. It was no sound of warning, no barking. I just got prescribed a course of antibiotics and will be given tetanus vaccine.

What should I do? This dog is always barking at people and is always not on lead. What, if it was a small kid attacked, not me. I feel I should do something about it. Without any consequences for my neighbours, it will stay as it is….

It sounds like the op was visiting a house and as they were leaving, the dog bit them?

Definitely tell the owner, OP. You have a duty to.

You should have went back inside there and then.

Possibly call to your neighbour's house and tell them what happened. Suggest that they pay your medical expenses and control the dog in future.

You could also report it to the dog warden.

Contact details will be on your local authority website.

My Aunt's dog was put down like this about 15 years ago after biting someone in a Cork Shopping Mall.

I just left my house and went along the street, when it happened. I did go back to the neighbours house and told them what happened. They said sorry and that it never happened. While I doubt. It is aggressive dog barking at everyone. My neighbours don't have any gate, so it it just running around.

You should be ok, you've had a tetanus shot.

The antibiotics were probably over the top, how big was the wound? Did you have stitches?

Keep it clean, don't get it wet. After a week change the dressing… depends on the wound but after a certain amount of time some air will be good. I'm surprised the nurse that gave you the shot didn't tell you how to look after the wound.

I went to Laya Clinic. They run out of tetanus vaccine, so I will have it tomorrow in Beaumont.

Wound wasn't big, no stitches. Yet I got very strong antibiotics. The pharmacist didn't give me the prescribed amount. She said that it was twice too big dosage.

You'll be fine, I wish you a speedy recovery. They normally bite on the buttocks and legs, so hopefully no finger damage.

Regarding future safety and the community? I wouldn't be comfortable if I had kids and there's a biter off lead. You could go down the litigious route and contact a solicitor, you could talk to the owners (that could go nuclear if they're morons) it's up to you and how approachable they are.

Normally the dog owner with the correct insurance, lead, care, socialisation, training and love are the ones that don't really need the third party insurance.

Well, they should have control over their dog, which includes allowing it out in public alone. So i would report it to the dog warden and possibly Gardai.

They need to keep it in, not roaming outside, it's an offence on their part.

Take photos of your puncture wounds and copy the Laya receipt and take both to their house.

Tell them that as they accept no responsibility for their dangerous dog to be restricted, they are being reported.

Fair play to Beaumont for doing what Laya should have done. Bad form to treat dog bites, but then send patients to public hospitals for tetanus injections. And their approach to prescribing antibiotics is not good.

The dog bit you while on public property and not under control. Call the dog warden, give details, thats it. Don't go to the neighbours about it.

I find it strange how its always the dogs who get capital punishment, but the useless owners who got the dog into the mess in the first place are treated with mild disregard.

I’d definitely report this to the dog warden. Another aspect that bothers me: you say they are in a house with ungated property - who picks up the dog crap when the dog makes a deposit?

Putting the dog down would be significant enough punishment for the owner, I would have thought. But you could go after the owner via a civil case as well if you felt it necessary.

I have no idea, if Beamount will give it to me. I will go there in the moment. I started thinking that maybe there is tetanus vaccine shortage in general, so they gave me this strong antibiotics just in case I won't get it at all atm.
