Elderly main driver medically unfit to drive.

Can't be an unusual circumstance but difficult to find any clear information. Hopefully someone has gone through the same.

Dad is the main driver on my parents motor policy. Dad is now medically unable to drive and his license is due to laps. Mum is a named driver on this policy but still needs, and is medically fit, to drive. Is taking out a new policy in her name the only option, or is there a workaround. Any experience/advice welcomed.

She may get some claims free credit for being a named driver. Your best bet is to go to a broker. This must be fairly usual occurrence in a one car family.

Probably better off putting the car in her own name and getting own insurance. You should get a refund for whatever is remaining on your dads current insurance.

It shouldn't be too expensive.

An assumption in most insurance policies is that the policyholder is the registered owner and principal driver of the car insured. I think you're confusing 'ownership' with 'insurable interest'.

It costs nothing to change the registered owner and can avoid any complications if there is a claim.

It adds another owner to the car's record though. Not a concern in the OP's case admittedly.

For spouses switching every year or two the final number of owners on the car at trade-in or sale would negatively affect value imo.

Just an update on this. Zurich were extremely helpful on this and finalised a quote of 490e. Thanks everyone for all you advice 👍
