50 years as named driver - own policy for first time

My parents are elderly, my father no longer drives but the policy is still in his name and has been for decades. My mother has been a named driver on the policy for 50 years and feels that the time is now right to switch the policy to her name and remove my dad from the policy. She is concerned that she will be treated like someone taking out a policy for the first time.

Does anyone have any experience of a similar situation or what to expect when it comes time to renew?

They will allow something for her named driver experience.

What will depend on each company you call.

Some will offer more than others.

I did a quick quote for roughly her age driving a 10 year old Fod Focus.

I think the first year can be a bit tough but it settles down then.

As above there will be allowances available for the years as a named driver.

A call to an independent broker may be helpful in finding them.

You’ll have to get some quotes. No one here can tell you how much her insurance is going to cost.

Got quotes from chill.ie, forms allowed ‘credit’ for six years named driver experience. Five quotes from 630 (Allianz) up to 2500. She was afraid she would not be able to get a quote at all. Seems like it’ll be fine, but still check with a broker. Thanks all

Aviva will allow named driver experience towards a NCB. 50 years as a named driver is a long time to be fair.

my mother in law had to do this last year, first time on her own insurance.

I did lots of shopping around with her named driving and we got it with aviva for less than 350. She had to prove every year of the last 5 who she was named under, but once she'd that it was all good.

Married 50 years all of which were spent as a named driver. Dad no longer going to be driving, so time to strike out on her own.

How old is she? Just send her out on the road. No one's gonna stop the old dear and even if they do she can just say she's got the dementia.

I did it recently after nearly 20 years as a named driver, and I had the same worries. My quote with Aviva was so cheap it was below their minimum price so I was able to add on extras for free. I'm middle-aged, I'd expect someone 70+ to have some extra loading.

As mentioned above I had to go back and get evidence for the last 5 years which was a pain as we regularly switch and they don't include the named driver when they send out the NCB letter.

All conditions are 'treatable', just depends on how humane you want to be. 😎
