    Hi

Locked car key in boot, well, left car key in boot and it locked itself.

Had AA guy out and he couldn't open, said it was deadlocked and that locksmith needed. Anyone know if allianz insurance cover this type of scenario ? I have comprehensive but with a 250e excess. Does the excess apply to everything?

Check your policy document? Call their emergency line and ask?

Called but only claims can answer they said and not open until tomorrow. Excess of 250e mentioned in policy but not clear if it applies to everything or if they cover all scenarios like breakdown assistance. ( they got aa out to me under breakdown assistance and don't believe I have to pay this )

Do you not have access to the spare key? I done the same myself last year but I was able to get a family member to bring the spare key to me.

    😆no spare

Surprised that the car locked itself with the key in it. Usually cars that self-lock have key detection to prevent that happening.

Unless it's just the boot? In which case would there be a possibility of accessing the boot from inside the car?

Other alternative would be to check with the main dealer to see if there's another option, they may be able to get you a key from your VIN.

What make and model is it? Some cars have apps where you can unlock from your phone, but that may have to be set up first with the physical key present.

Many of the car lock specialists will be able to programme a key when at your car.

The insurance excess would apply, so probably not claimable as the cost would be similar.

Locksmith probably your best option but assuming it's a 2nd hand car, have a look underneath for a spare key. Previous owner may have cable tied one somewhere or hidden one in a magnetic box

Alternatively break door glass, unlock from inside and claim on windscreen cover

....and obviously get a copy made asap

    Thanks.

Might be best to just break the small corner window and open the door from the inside, fold the back seats down and access the boot.

Yes just the boot. If I could access the car I could open boot from inside. Passat 2011.

Would it not be more expensive to repair the window? Locksmith 200 / 250

Look for a 2nd hand window if you don't have windscreen cover

The glass is like €30 in a scrapyard, and corner glass can usually be fitted yourself using Tec 7 paste. I’ve done it before just not on a Passat. Took me 5 minutes.

If it's deadlocked he won't be able to open it from inside even if he smashes the window. That's the entire point of deadlocking.

But he could access the boot and retrieve the key

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,567 ✭✭✭✭Dial Hard

He'll have to smash one of the main windows and physically climb into the car to do that. He ain't getting in through the C Pillar window, as suggested.

Yeah, somebody else suggested smashing the door window which would get you in.

Still don't understand how the car locked itself. I thought the dead locks only engaged from the remote key fob and self locking wasn't possible on some VAG cars with the key inside. Maybe not on that MY, but seems a bit stupid if possible.

The answers from the general public are actually funny sometimes lol

Yes break the window lol. Then open a new thread about the broken window 😂😂

Is there any way to pry open the boot without a load of damage ?? 😆 yea the aa guy said that they ( presume all car makers ) stopped deadlocking in 2015 so it's obviously a pain.

Yes I have one key...rushing and left it in boot as was rushing, came back and the lot locked

Would the car dealer, Al hayes who I got it off have a master or something?

You can sometimes open a car door with a screwdriver and a coat hanger, I remember I done it about 25 years ago when I locked a key inside. May not work with your car though.

Don't think there's such a thing. You can order a replacement using the VIN afaik. But I'd say that's a good deal more expensive than a window or a locksmith.

Use that duct tape trick to pull down the window?

EDIT: just googled it, that duct tape trick is nonsense

Failing that you could smash the windscreen. It's likely covered under windscreen repair. I wouldn't bother breaking another window.

In the early 2010s, I took my parents 06/07 Passat up the country and locked the keys in the boot. Late on a Sunday evening, well into the countryside and needed it the next morning for work. Broke the C pillar window with a hammer and was able to unlock the door and get in the boot from the back seat.

Got somebody to come out and replace it the next day at work and it was definitely under €100 but imagine it would be way more these days.

The car is still in use as a farm car actually. Great service but has ever since had this tiny added gap on the top of the door. Made no difference to performance and not noticeable from a distance.

Yeah, great idea to have deadlocking as a security feature, which can then be undone by pressing a button inside the car.

Well I recently had to replace a window on a VW Golf for about €130 parts & labour if OP has to climb through the boot and do it that way. At that point I’d probably just get a locksmith tho to avoid to hassle of sourcing a window etc. I could have sworn I paid substantially less than €250 for a locksmith to open my door before only a couple of years ago

This happened to me a few months ago. Seat Arona with keyless entry. Was changing for a run, put the key down in the boot while I was putting on runners. Forgot about it and closed the boot.

Heard the car lock about 10 seconds later and realized what had happened. Apparently, VAG group cars in particular will do this- deadlock with the key in the boot.

I had to pick children up and wasn't near home to arrange to get the spare key. Broke the driver's window and climbed in to get the key through the back seat.

Take your time and put some tape on the window when breaking it to try and hold some of the glass together. I was in a rush and glass went absolutely everywhere.

Cost 190 quid to replace the window versus and excess of 250 for any insurance claim. You could break the windscreen I suppose if you didn't have to drive afterwards before repairing
