    How young are you?

I had school closures for storms, snow and lack of heating (actually starting school in Junior Infants was two weeks late due to that - in September) and I'm not particularly young anymore.

I better believe them so, one of the last storms I thought they were exaggerating but there were branches of trees blown off one night, that never happened before.

My main worry is will the weather be manky (sorry I am not into the proper weather terminology) in Croke Park on saturday, enough for the game to played or worse could the match be called off??

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Can I just say thank you to all the knowledgeable posters here , for warning us all that this was coming. Especially when it meant I could let immediate family members who are roofing contractors know. Wouldn't want to be on a roof on Friday 😮😮 They're now going to have a long weekend, after making sure everything is safe, tied down, nothing loose tomorrow.

The chair of the National Emergency Co-ordination Group has said Storm Éowyn will probably be among the 'severest storms' that Ireland has ever seen.

You are. I have no idea where this myth came from.

Only if you're driving to a match on Saturday via the airport at 6:30am on Friday, to collect your rubbish bins

Looks like it could be a very rough day on Friday, lots of damage if the forecasts are right.

Are we expecting all schools to close in Dublin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 599 ✭✭✭DayInTheBog

Most rural schools will remain closed as students are relying on school transport

As I said earlier, Ophelia had red warnings issued on 14th October 2017 for Cork, Kerry, Clare, Galway and Mayo. Ophelia hit on the 16th.

However, this is the first time a nationwide red has been issued two days prior to the event.

I never said I disagreed with them. I was saying it's silly that these colours only extend to the borders of each county

Tried to look this up… who is actually on this group?

The red warning for Dublin currently end at noon, so it's highly unlikely they then drag in staff and pupil for the sake of a couple of hours at best.

I imagine colleges too, plenty of people take the train home Friday . Can’t see them running

We may need to start a separate discussion for Sunday into monday rain and (lesser) wind threats, or extend this thread with a few brief tracking posts now to Sat. Orange or even red alert level rainfalls shown on GFS for Wexford-Wicklow (additional 40-50 mm).

Another issue to keep in mind is very cold temps quickly setting in at end of strongest winds on Friday, wrap around of mP air mass will drop temps from 10-12 C to 4-6 C within two hours … combined with any widespread power issues, people will be finding it uncomfortably cold inside by Friday eve and overnight if they rely on electric power to provide heat. If you believe you could lose power and heating, would be smart to heat up your living space while you have power Thursday afternoon to time of peak winds and potential start of power outages.

Can I just say that this is really quite incredible. You much come from very sturdy stock.
I knew a little about the 1839 storm but not about the waves breaking over the Cliffs of Moher. Astonishing not more people perished back then, but I expect the numbers rose in the weeks following the storm.

Is that for all day Friday or just the duration of the red warning?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,071 ✭✭✭aidanodr

Here is the info re car insurance and a red warning. CAVEAT is - I thnk - yes you are covered in RED warning BUT only if Full Comprehensive?

Comprehensive car insurance should cover drivers for any damage caused by techerous weather during a red weather wanring.

However, if a motorist is found to have been driving irresponsibly during bad weather leading to a collision - your insurer may not pay out in the end.

If an insurance company is able to prove contributory negligence on the part of a motorist, their claim will be questioned.

An Insurance Ireland spokesperson previously said: "Damage to cars caused by the storm is covered by comprehensive motor insurance policies.

"Third-party fire and theft policies cover motorist's for damage to other cars in the event of an accident, injury to other people, or damage to your car in the event of a fire or theft."

Some of the strongest gusts I've experienced is westerlys funneling off the twelve Ben's over Lough Corrib.

The last place ya want to be is a lake when the weather turns.

It’s for the duration of the Red warning, here is the text if it

Following meetings of the National Emergency Co-ordination Group regarding Storm Éowyn, the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management has advised Storm Éowyn is forecast to bring very dangerous and destructive winds on Thursday night and Friday.

The Directorate has requested all schools, Early Learning and Care (ELC), School-Age Childcare (SAC) and further and higher education institutionsservices in Red counties to close for the duration of the Red warning which is currently in place for Friday, 24 January. Services should ensure they communicate closures to parents as early as possible. The Directorate has further requested individual service providers to make an assessment of damage and advise parents directly on reopening. It is also important to remember that even after the storm has passed, there is a strong possibility of fallen trees and other debris so drivers are also urged to take care in the aftermath of the storm.

From the readings and times it's going to be escalated again in the next few hours for longer duration.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,750 ✭✭✭✭L1011

    The Sun is a comic.

Nothing changes in a red warning. You are only covered for weather damage by comprehensive anyway

Net Zero means we are paying for the destruction of our economy and society in pursuit of an unachievable and pointless policy.
