I hadn't had a cold since way before Covid, haven't had covid either though all the family had it at some stage - all totally vaccinated. Got a sore throat 10 days before Christmas and it was like I had swallowed barbed wire. I couldn't swallow, at one point I could hardly breathe, agony coughing. Tested clear for Covid. Went to Caredoc and got antibiotics. It took over a week to go away and I still have a bit of a cough. Horrible dose.

Maybe if you have the luxury of working from home wear a mask in shops to avoid getting the flu or COVID of course most people work in shops hotels etc they have to leave home

November December January is the peak time for colds and flu

i think i have reputured an eardrum from coughing....is that possible ?

no hearing in left ear for two days..yesterday was a ringing in it and then went to like underwater since...tried holding nose mouth and blowing etc...then some ear cleaning oil in it...still same...very faint sound in that ear like under water..

I've had what I would describe as a mild cold for about a fortnight. A few things said here resonate with me. Namely zero appetite and crippling exhaustion. It started with a sore throat that took a week to clear.

No fever which is why I'm differentiating it from a flu. I did have a flu back in November and it's a very different feeling.

I’m in the same boat , couldn’t stop coughing ( not as bad now ) ,my right ear and the sensation of “ popping “ like you get on a flight , can’t get my ear back to normal .

Yeah definitely not 'flu for me, even though I did have a high temperature and awful cough. But as you say, 'flu is different.

Remember five years ago there was lots of talk about a whopper of a dose going around... 😬

Mine only seemed to last 24 hours or so... the chills, fever, headache etc. Just a bit of a cough now. Hopefully there isn't a headcold/sore throat stage to follow.

There seems to be a lot of it about. One neighbour got flu twice over Christmas and another, covid.

I didn't hear about that. Must not have gotten much coverage.

This flu is a bad dose. Started coming down with it on Dec 20th, fully crocked on 21st but had to travel home by ferry so on the go from 8 AM that morning until 3 AM the following morning. Feck all eaten since. Christmas was a washout and today is the first day that the head is mostly clear. Days spent in bed and still as weak as a newborn kitten and no not Covid. Tested clear as did wife and son who both had it before kindly sharing with me.

I’ve had two weeks of misery, weakness and sore throat that I thought would turn into a cold, followed by coughing until I nearly threw up. Now it’s sneezing like a lunatic, and nose and eyes streaming, I’m on a third cough bottle after lemsip which was useless. Now taking Uniflu. Nothing is shifting it. Christmas was a wipeout.

Mad how people are describing COVID symptoms above very accurately but apparently not COVID- must be a b1tch of a thing as COVID itself pre vaccine was horrible .

Had the start of something the week before Christmas - straight to doc and antibiotics seemed to have kept it from getting worse - still not 100% but getting there - at least Christmas wasn’t ruined -

Yeah we did, the only ones who didnt were terminally ill.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,448 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

Yes, terminal from viruses. Your comment makes no sense. Millions have died from viruses as a result of there being no vaccines.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,659 ✭✭✭SupaCat95

Your comment makes no sense. You cannot make a vaccine for a virus that mutates as fast as the common cold or the flu. You just have to suffer it. Also vaccines are supposed to give you immunity, yet people still got covid after being vaccinations. So what was given to them in the vaccination?

I'm not getting into an anti vac debate with you but you obviously don't understand how Viruses nor Vaccines work.

Why does every discussion have to get hijacked by nutters now?

A simple misery share about having the flu over Christmas and then the science deniers arrive. Discussion forums like this just can't function anymore.

Fully over it now. Was only really bad for two days. Wife is shaking the house with the cough.

    Seems seriously contagious.

It's like the flat earthers. I can't understand gravity so obviously it's a giant worldwide conspiracy.

It might be an illness the need to believe in this nonsense.

Codinex or sleeping tablets, nothing worked for me either, got 2 hours sleep a night max for 10 days straight as coughing all night.. Don't know if would have improved anyway but got steroid nasal spray and steroid inhaler and within a few days, cough had almost gone. It's horrendous , I used get false energy during the day but was slowly going mad from lack of sleep 😁

I know! Covid pre-vaccine had people dropping dead in the streets of china and resulted in the completely understandable reaction of boarding them into their houses. And remember italy having bodybags all over the place?!?

    Covid was terrible.

But at least we got to clap for health workers and avoided the badness with a substantial €9 meal.

Now we all have a flu. No need to worry.

Flu can kill vulnerable people - certainly not on the scale of original covid but it’s deadly for certain demographics - a lot of sickness this Christmas - I picked up mine in a pub- the only time I went out pre Christmas 😀- schools going back next week will be the next wave I imagine - lots of people getting it now so the germs will spread like wildfire next week

  • Site Banned Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭Yvonne007

A cold can kill vulnearable people.

There hasn't been a lot of sickness this christmas, at least, not an exceptional amount. It's flu season.

Flu is bad, but it always has been. And I agree, schools are a petri dish of germs. But it has been this way since I can remember.

    Edit **

this is coming from someone whose house had the "pox" since Xmas day and are only getting back to normal.

That flu vaccine worked a treat. ☺️

I had the flu (and Covid) vaccines. I got pretty sick. But it was not flu. Or Covid.

I got the 'flu vaccination and I didn't get influenza. I got a bad cold, which the 'flu vaccination does not protect against. "Flu" is a specific virus, not a generic term for bad cold, no matter how awful the cold is. A bad cold can become a chest infection, which can be very nasty, especially for those who have asthma. Still not 'flu though.

For me, the zero appetite and ability to sleep for 20+ hours a day made it different than my experiences with cold, flus of the past or indeed Covid.

So far today Ive had a plate of chicken wings and some crackers and pate. It's the most Ive eaten in 4 days.

A lot of ppl seem to use the word “flu” to describe everything from a minor head cold to a sick stomach, any kind of respiratory infection.

The actual flu can produce a very nasty illness. Most people don’t get it very often and end up thinking that every cold they had is flu, so dismiss people who’ve actually had flu as exaggerating the symptoms. The flu can be absolutely nasty and extremely dangerous for some people. It killed one of my older relatives a few years before Covid, and she was someone who was extremely robust and not assumed to be vulnerable at all. She was at a party, having a great time, full of energy - got flu, it rapidly turned into pneumonia, she thought she was fine and didn’t seek medical help. Then it got very bad over night — she called an ambulance, was hospitalised and unfortunately didn’t recover.

Seriously, grow up and stop this conspiracy theory b/s. People aren’t being “snowflakes” you just role a dice with flu and COVID, especially if you’re older or have risks.
