3400 Watt Digital Kettle in Lidl this week

with 230V nominal supply results in current of 14.78 A (almost 15A)

So is this overcurrent considered OK on a typical 13A socket for the duration of boiling a kettle?

That's probably 3400W at 240V which is 3123W at 230V, = 13.58A.

What exactly does a digital kettle do over a standard kettle? Temperature display?

Using the max voltage of 250v at 13a still only gives 3.3kW gross.

I suspect this is a schuko kettle with a continental plug cut off and a uk/ire plug stuck on, without a change in branding/labeling.

Digital, frankly, is old hat, I myself will wait for the AI Kettle to come out 😋

In all serious, though, if it indeed pulls 3.4kW I imagine they could end up with a lot of returns with blown plugtop fuses, that's if it burns out quick enough to prevent the plugtop itself burning and melting (or worse).

Are there no standards that you are required to meet before putting something like this on the market?
