Or you could buy used or nearly new?

I have never bought a brand new mobile phone. Always used in mint condition.

Currently on an S24 which I bought for £350, and it was a few months old. With its updates until 2030 I am guessing the battery will go before the phone does.

Having said that, I had an S10e for several years before the S24, and for a standard phone user who doesn't game or need anything fancy, I don't see much of an upgrade.

    Phones have plateaued I think.

Are you sure about that Hotback Desito? There are female only hostels and landlords can, and often do, specify that they're looking to rent to women only. Based on that, it would seem that a private company can do whatever they want and, in this case, provide insurance to women only.

But to get back on topic, dry roasted peanuts cost an arm and a leg. 4.50 for a biggish bag. The own brand ones are horrible, unfortunately, so it's either pay or go without.

yeah, That vehicle was set up at a time when they could discriminate against men. We’re forced to change it some years ago.

You may have missed the memo

    https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/memo_12_1012

From 21 December 2012, insurance companies in the European Union will have to charge the same price to men and women for the same insurance products, without distinction on the grounds of sex. The change will apply to all new contracts for insurance products, including car insurance, life insurance and annuities.

Thanks. It's still strange that there are female only hostels and that landlords refuse to rent to men.

It’s not really on topic but many will state “males only” as well. Often nothing to do with sexism but household dynamics.
I lived in a house with 3 other men, when one moved the ad went up asking for men only to apply.

    Bin charges.

Most of the time when I get an email from my provider, I just know it's another increase in fees. And It's not like insurance or energy where there are several options to switch provider. In some ways I don't mind increases in entertainment etc., at least those increases are for items that are enjoyable.

It's not that long ago that bins in Dublin were free, early 2000s, and your parents just tipped the binmen at Christmas. Now you don't even get a full service for your fee, you have to bring plastic bottles back to the supermarket and queue like an idiot to put the bottles in the machines that run constantly on electricity for 24 hours, all in a bid to save the planet apparently.

What a joke. I'd say the lads that set up bin firms during the privatisation era are cleaning up, in more ways than one.

Where can I ask? I enjoy a donut but I’m damned if I’ll pay €3.50 for one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭WishUWereHere

Adblu, price variation is crazy. CircleK sells 10 lts for €33.50 yet Screwfix sells the same 10 lts ( not sure about the brand ) for €19.99.

Saw it even cheaper in B&Q recently, but cannot remember the price.

    Airport 'food'.

I was flying to Orlando for a work thing. Stop off in Minneapolis. The first flight was 'very' early and the second flight was mid day so had some early hours to kill and started to feel hungry.

I went to the food court area and ordered a breakfast sub from Firehouse Subs. Expecting it to be similar in side to their lunch time subs, which are about 8". Well, this breakfast sub was about 4", maybe 5. I was decent enough, pretty basic, egg and cheese on a fresh roll, but at least it was real cheese.

So, I eat that and some 30 or so minutes go by and I realize that funky little breakfast sub is not going to cut it. So I go to the Shake Shack. I order a double egg sandwich with hash browns on the side. The lady tells me they are out of hash browns but have tater tots. My mind was set of some form of potato breakfast food so I went with it. The bill came to about $25 USD, which is nearly $35 CAD! It was not worth close to that. I couldn't even finish the tater tots.

While we're at it. I noticed on most of the checks for meals there is a mandatory gratuity (tips) added. My buddy from the states was saying they do that in touristy areas because you get a lot of international tourists coming through that don't have the same tipping culture. Hmmm, how about just pay your staff a living wage and price your food accordingly? Instead I see quesadillas for $14.50 on the menu but by the time the bill comes it's well over $20 when you add the tax and mandatory tip. And am I expected to tip on top of that too? Jeeez.

Aldi refill blades, 4.99 for a 5 pack. Just as good. Lidl ones are not.

I've an Oppo phone, paid €500 for it last December, I generally like it but the battery is horrendous

Most of the big names sell budget phones that are every bit as good as a 5 year old flagship. Moto G54 is what I have now. €170 delivered.

Golden Discs can be very expensive when buying a lot of their products. I was looking up 4K UHD boxsets from Christopher Nolan & Batman movies from the 90's; they were extortionate. The Christopher Nolan 7 movie 4k boxset is currently sold there for €150. There is also an 8 movie 4k boxset which includes Tenet is sold from there for the same price. The 4k boxset which has the Batman movies from Tim Burton & Joel Schumacher costs another €120. Considering that the Christopher Nolan boxset has first been sold from shops since 2018 and the Batman 4k movie boxset since 2019; you would feel severely ripped off if you buy those items from there.

If you buy them from other retailers like HMV in Dublin's Henry St or Amazon; you probably would get them for a lot cheaper.

I paid around €100 so far for a lot of these movies separately which has saved me a few quid in the process.

Cocktails! It still blows my mind we pay anything to €16 for a couple shots of alcohol and some mixers

In fairness, the cost and development of new medicines runs into the billions so I understand why patents cost more as they have to get that money back, but there is also blatant profiteering going on.

Sorry but you're talking about price of tickets with popcorn which I assume you buy and then complain about people eating in the cinema.

I do hate it though and do understand why people need to sh1te whilst watching a movie.

And don't get me started on the phone use.
