    Hi folks

Rookie question. Can I get your advise on what chokes to put on my OU 686 for the first clay session? Also what ammo size is advisable, 7.5 or 8, and what brand?

    Thanks,

    Gerry

Really does depend on the type of shooting and your shooting style.

For DTL/trap I used to go improved cylinder in the bottom barrel and modified (half) in the top. Fired bottom first, as quick as possible, then tighter choke in the top barrel which would go second.

Say it was fur and feather I'd want as open a choke as possible for the fur so it's cylinder and tighter for the feather so modified or improved modified for that.

Ideally you want a full range of chokes and while most will transit from one type of clay shooting to another you need to have the choice to tighten or loosen the shot pattern depending on type of shooting, your distance and reaction time. I used to shoot with a chap that used two improved cylinder chokes but by feck he was quick and dropped them as soon as they came out of the trap.

I'm not so fast so if the first misses (cylinder) I need that extra range for the second shot.

As for cartridges. I usually stuck with Eley. Olympic but when flush would go for Eley Superb. 28gr, 7.5s in both.

Again this is a personal choice and I haven't shot competitively in years so there may be a much better selection available since.

I was also not great so there will be lads along shortly to give you some proper advice.

Thanks Cass -some good pointers there . I'll be starting out as easy as possible ( at Lakelands) so was thinking 50 clays of trap shooting or skeet, but again I'm fairly clueless in relation to the easiest disciplines!

Ill be asking for an intro session.

    Good info by Cass there.

If shooing skeet or very close in clays use/try some 9’s and 8’s.

7.5, 8’s and 9’s are the commonest cartridges used in clays, depending on the trap/clay speed, distance and angles, this where choke choice comes into play.

Some reading hereunder may help you out.

    What are you shooting? Sporting/skeet/trap?

As for ammo its all personal preference in the brand. I use fiocchi as I get a great price per 1000. But noting wrong with eley/gamebore/bornaghi/cheddite etc.

Dont over think chokes or ammo. Its the Indian not the arrow. Chokes cover inches we usually miss by feet
