Non Alcoholic Drinks Sales Rules

Couldnt find the answer in any older thread.

Since the changes in Alcohol sections of shops over the last couple of years i.e. it having to be completelt cordoned off from the rest of the shop etc

Are non alcoholic beers still lumped in with the rules in that you can't buy them before 10.30 and 12.30 ?

Great selection of non alcoholic beers over the last couple of years and looking to cut down. Wouldbe great if I can pick them up during the Sunday morning Dunnes trip.

AFAIK, it's legal to sell non-alcohol beers at any time.

However, that is not the same thing as saying that a shop must sell them at any time. There's been plenty of incidences reported of shops applying the same sales policies of alcoholic drinks to non-alcoholic ones. If you try it and they say no, there's likely nothing you will be able to do about it (certainly the till staff won't, and it's not likely anybody on site will be able to override company policy). Raising complaints to head-office might, eventually, get policies changed, but that's a long-shot

In some stores the tills are programmed to refuse sale of alcohol before certain times.

Because non alcoholic beers typically have about .5% alcohol they are included.

The staff just can't sell them to you if the till is set up this way.

Non alcoholic are included in 5 off 25 in dunnes so assume the tills know it's not "alcohol"

But this is down to the individual supermarket. As far as the law is concerned anything .5% or under is legally classed as alcohol free.

Yes it only applies in some supermarkets.

It's more a "computer says no" problem than a legal one

Tesco is one that still requires "over 25" or ID card for approval at self service tills for Guinness 0.0

It's a case of the data entry person not differentiating and lumping it in with alcohol category.

Neither Lidl or Aldi sell non alcoholic beer outside licenced alcohol hours, I've tried 🙄😀

Display crew would not be connected to the data entry crew.

The drinks companies themselves should be getting the stores to change their systems

It's funny as you don't need a licence to sell N/A beer as seen by the likes of Dealz selling it. On the likes of Tesco and Dunnes till I remember my wife getting asked for ID to buy Jack Daniels BBQ sauce as the system flagged it.

It's not just in Ireland either.

I remember a few years ago I was in a pub/restaurant in the UK coming up to Christmas.

They had a note attached to the menu stating that they couldn't serve Christmas pudding to minors due to the alcohol content.

My mother(RIP) used to regularly give out about that. She'd go to Mass at 11am on a Sunday, go to the shop around 11.45 and get aything she needed for Sunday lunch. If she forgot the wine, it was tough sh!t. She could wait around in the shop for 30 minutes, or, go home, and what? then go back to the shop for 12.31?

That happened to me too with the JD BBQ sauce. There's more alcohol in the orange juice FFS.
