How to paint a stairs

Hi guys

What would I need to do to paint this stairs instead of re-carpetting, the wood is sound needs sanding obviously but what else to make sure the wood paint won't be coming off

There won't be mega traffic on it but don't want to go to the effort if it's not gonna work

A good primer is essential, especially when it comes to painting the stair treads. There's lots of good ones on the market but this one is excellent.

That New Yorkshire workshop guy is a genius who can turn his hand to anything. My favourite ones are when he made the plaster moldings or the new front door one is brilliant too.

Oil based isn't going to stop the knots bleeding through those.

Better off using a Shellac based primer. It will dry a lot faster and will stop the knots bleeding through.

I had an issue with water based

The primer didn't pass the "scrape test"despite me sanding the existing varnish as per instructions

I haven't used this particular primer, but what I will say if it does actually stop knots bleeding through, it will be the 1st water based primer (and I've used a fair few of them over the years) that I've seen that does. Regardless what's written on the tin.

I would use water based paint on maybe bedroom skirting now where I'm not to bothered and it's convenient to use

Anything else I wouldn't use it especially if there's footfall

Doesn't stop knots bleeding through tho.

I've used many many different types of primers over the years from waterbased, epoxy and Shellac. By far the best is Shellac. Sticks to previously varnished timber and stopped any knots bleeding through on new timber. It is more expensive and a bit harder to use. But once it's on it drys fast and sands back to a very smooth finish even on MDF edge's.

As I said I haven't used the Ronseal product, but I'll pick up some and test it out.
