Hard to watch Gauff fall apart like that. Can't even say Navarro played particularly well, was very much a self-destruction.

I have to agree with Henman, I think it's Zverev's to lose this year. If he is firing on all cylinders he is almost unstoppable.

Some chickens came home to roost for Gauff. Her forehand has never been solid, and her serve is a disaster waiting to happen. Navarro really should have won in straight sets, just as she did at Wimbledon.

Draper has taken first set against Machac solid first set, good on serve.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,182 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

    Draper very good against Machac.

    6-3, 6-1, 6-2.

Medvedev looks to be in the process of blowing away Borges (6-0 first set)

Oh dear, Hawkeye has gone down everywhere, all courts stopped. There's a lesson there somewhere.

Fritz takes the third, and gets to serve first fourth set.

If Zverev is going to win, he'll need to play his umpteenth five-setter in slams.

    Fritz in the semis

Played his game and Zverev looked very flat

But fire on cylinders all he didn't, and he's out. There's a guaranteed new slam finalist from this side of the draw: Fritz vs Tiafoe/Dimitrov.

Fritz, De Minaur and Dimitrov have pushed themselves into the reckoning for Turin with this run.

The big four fade away and he can't get past Taylor Fritz. Classic Zverev.

And then I was hoping against hope for Dimitrov…..

Should be some atmosphere for the final on Sunday with an American the final. Will be tough for their opponent to play against, Medvedev in particular would be prone to being rattled by the crowd.

Draper breaks De Minaur...2-0 first set..then breaks right back...

Then draper breaks him again 3-1 lead this is fun!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,182 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Draper misses set points on De Minaur serve but holds his own serve just about to take first set 6-3 great start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,182 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Draper two sets and now a break up in the third..he has played really well so far, good on serve, De Minaur been pretty poor can't seem to really get going.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,182 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Draper 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 impressive, yet to drop a set in the tournament.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,797 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

A British player who went deep into the US Open and hadn’t dropped a set yet. Where have we seen this before ?

Jessica Pegula dumps out Iga Swiatek, no real surprise there, IMHO. Pegula finally wins a slam QF at her 7th attempt.

There will be an all-American billionaire heiress showdown in the final, if Pegula and Emma Navarro both make it. It's more likely to be Sabalenka vs Muchova, but anything is possible.

    Ha fair.

He has also had a fairly helpful path too in fairness (with Alcaraz being knocked out).

Hoping for Tiafoe and Sinner to win their semis and Sinner to win the final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 788 ✭✭✭ledwithhedwith

the two failed tests not still a bit raw for your egg?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 788 ✭✭✭ledwithhedwith

pegula is heavy ish fav against muchova.cant see sabalenka having much issues

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,569 ✭✭✭✭josip

Nah, it's the most favourable outcome for Djokovic still being in with a chance of making Turin. A Draper win would probably result in only the top 7 qualifying. Fritz losing his semi would mean that there are 3 players within reach of Djokovic and he only needs to overtake 1.

Laura Robson is excellent, really enjoy her contributions, got a proper chuckle out of me with her "But for who Chris Kamara?" when the physio came on court yesterday and both De Minaur and Draper were struggling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 788 ✭✭✭ledwithhedwith

Oh proper fanboy. Don’t think Djokovic himself cares about Turin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,569 ✭✭✭✭josip

Guilty as charged. Some choices you can make in life, some are made for you 🙂

Agreed that Djokovic is unlikely to care much about Turin in itself, however it can be a useful points collector to get a better seeding at the AO which he probably still does care about.

Mixed doubles final on now and there is barely nobody in Arthur Ashe stadium probably only 500 in a 25k seater venue (despite 2 americans being in the final).

Why do they not just give away tickets for free to members of the public or even give away batches to kids tennis clubs or schools in order to fill up the stadium. At least it would generate some food and merchandise sales which is more than they'll get with nobody in the stadium.

So where's Paolini? Arrani has been cheering her on at every single match I've watched in the last while, I'd have expected her to return the favour.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,929 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Didn't they use to do this at Wimbledon? Think they use to play the mixed doubles on the Monday and it was free into it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,929 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Draper throwing away the first set

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,182 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

    Sinner takes first set 7-5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭klr87

Draper's service games this set are taking a loooong time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,929 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Draper dripping all over the court. Even had to change his shoes as they were so wet it was a safety issue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,697 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

And now Draper has vomited on the court and Sinner looks to have sprained his wrist.

Bizzare match so far, real war of attritions , seems to be incredibly humid, both of them are sweating like pigs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,929 ✭✭✭Floppybits

A happening in this match. Watching it on ESPN and the difference in commentary.

Tie break to Sinner, 7-3. The organisers are probably praying he wraps up a straight sets win, and quickly. The turnaround between day and night sessions on Ashe always seems to be slow compared to other show courts. Maybe the sheer size of Ashe and the crowd is part of the problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭klr87

Sinner wins 6-2 in the third. Draper was out of gas after 3 hours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,929 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Draper always seems to have a problem lasting in these matches. Something he needs to work on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,855 ✭✭✭BionicRasher

    Fritz wins the other semi

He looks fresh but not sure he can beat Sinner in the final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,855 ✭✭✭BionicRasher

Sinner did injury his left wrist so I wonder if that will come in to play during the final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,288 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

    Nothing a few steroids can't fix 😀

The women's final IMHO would have been more interesting if Muchova hadn't contrived to lose to Pegula from a 6-1 2-0 lead in the semi-final. I can't see Pegula beating Sabalenka, who doesn't fold under pressure nearly as much as she was wont to do. I live in hope though.

Interesting challenge ahead for Sabalenka tonight. For the second year running she'll play the final against an American and the crowd. Leads the h2h 5-2 but on hard courts they're split at 2-2.

As long as Sabalenka keeps her head together I think she'll be making the h2h 6-2 and winning slam #3. Will be keeping my fingers crossed for her.
