yeah mine does the same.. probably security in case anyone picked up your unlocked phone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,224 ✭✭✭ironictoaster

Ah grand. I thought this was odd. I am convinced previously I could just unlock my phone and just tap at the machine, especially for small payments, coffee etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,607 ✭✭✭wassie

Yes. Google Pay was brought more in line with other mobile payment systems like Apple Pay, which have long required re-authentication for payments.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,203 ✭✭✭Explosive_Cornflake

The one way to be more consistent on the till is to unlock the phone using the card shortcut on the lock screen. That will launch you into wallet per-authenticated for payments.

Yes, it is normal. They keep changing the frequency the the fingerprint is required. Sometime I could go for 48 hours without a fingerprint, other days it happens everytime is use wallet.

Is anyone else experiencing an increased battery drain since moving to Android 16?

Nothing noticeable here - Pro XL

No summer reductions seem likely on pixel 9? Thought there might be something on Amazon with their "sale", anyone any experience of buying/trading in using Amazon for pixel? Coming from a pixel 7

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,607 ✭✭✭wassie

Amazon UK site definitely has all Pixel 9 series reduced.

    9a - £419

    9 - £609

    9Pro - £679

    9Pro XL - £779

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,607 ✭✭✭wassie

Also no experience myself on Amazon trade-ins, but reports suggest prices offered are rubbish. CEX currently offering €147 cash or €177 voucher if you want an easy sale. Three are selling Pixel 9 for €649.,

Pixel 10 is expected to be available to order at end of Aug, so might wont to hold off then.

Google for past couple of years have done great trade-in prices for Pixel phones (especially 2-3 year old models) at the new series launches. When combined with their bonus offers, it can be a good deal.

We plan on trading a P8 for a P10 Pro when its launched.

Thanks a mill for that, normally upgrade round this time of year but am wondering now if I should just hold out at this stage. Phone working fine although I do think there's better cameras out there at this point.

If anyone has gone from a 7 to 9 you might let me know if it's worth it!

The offer last year wasn't great - free sub to their Gemini AI. The previous year I bought a P8 pro & sold the Pixel watch that came with it the day it arrived! Waiting with interest to see what they offer this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 385 ✭✭Dozz

The best offer they had was the free Bose headphones with the Pixel 6.

Headphones and phone still going strong

The Pixel Watch or Pixel Buds offer with the Pixel 8 was a decent deal also. Hopefully they'll have something similar with the Pixel 10, as by all accounts, it's pretty much a Pixel 9 but with a newly designed processor from TSMC instead of Samsung.

The Bose deal was great, my 6 is starting to show it's age battery is at 82% capacity, so doesn't last a whole day anymore. Rarely an issue as I'm never far from a charger or car. If I'm out and might need it I'll just carry a powerbank. It has been a bit glitchy sometimes and I do need to do a flash it with new firmware it as Revolut has stopped working on it but it's a bit of a pain to do. In a way nearly easier set up a new phone!

10 does seem a very minor update but processor hopefully will make a difference to battery life. 6 is still in support for a year so will on will depend how good launch offer on is 10 Pro XL if I go with that or a heavily discounted 9 Pro XL.

€766 from amazon France is tempting. Should hold out for 256 version though. For an extra €178 at the moment I could live with 128gb.

Yeah - in fairness the deals and trade-ins were probably better with the more expensive models.

    I received a trade-in of €433 on my P7 - not bad for phone I paid €519 for 18 months earlier.

So for €786 I got 9Pro XL (128gb), a set of Pixel Buds Pro 2 (€249) and a Google One AI Premium annual plan (€220/yr).

With included Gemini and storage, its been great value for as I was able to share this with my family.

Like any free sub, Gemini Pro is only valuable if you use it. I didnt think it was much of a bargain, but now I use it over chatGPT on my laptop as the latest versions are very good. Managed to have some long chats on my phone on my longer work commutes also about topics of interest to me - its a great way to learn.

Actually I remember getting some Bose headphones with the Pixel 5 back in 2020. That was a great offer too! But remember they left the Irish market high and dry when they launched the Pixel 7. I think they lost a lot of customers over that.

Still getting about 6 hours screen on time a day from my 6 Pro, probably won't need anywhere near that if boards dies though 😔

Think I'll stick with it another year but if I was switching now I'd probably go for the OnePlus 13. €824 on amazon.fr right now for the 512gb version, probably a significantly better phone than the 10 Pro will be bar maybe the cameras.

Just picked up a refurb Pixel 9 pro which was described as "Very good" on the site, but honestly it's just like new. €723 paid for it so I'm reasonably happy so far.

Only thing is, I thought Pixels were pretty main stream like Samsungs and iPhones so finding a case would be easy. No such luck around Athlone so I'm finding myself being super careful with the device until I can find something online.

    This too shall pass.

When you say 'better' phone, it all depends on what is important for you.

As its typical of a Chinese phone, the specs are superior and this can make it seem like a better value proposition.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite (Gen 4) is expected to maintain its lead over the Tensor G5 in terms of raw CPU and GPU benchmarks, which would make the OP13 the probable choice for heavy gaming and performance-intensive tasks.

Also the OP13 should have a brighter screen, bigger battery faster & faster charging (although this can also lead to reduced battery life, as Google have really started to prioritise the management its batteries for longevity. This is why you see the charge rate slow down after 80%).

As you noted, the Pixel should have the egde on the physical camera.

But for me, the Pixels are the "better" phone due the actual user experience. Superior camera processing, extensive AI features along with 7 years of updates and being the first receive these and new features.

And as much as I have always had privacy concerns about Google, they have upped their game considerably in last couple of years. I am much more wary about using Chinese owned tech these days and OnePlus is no stranger to sketchy behaviour.

Again this is just whats important to myself. Others will have different opinions.

It's not that hard to change the battery on a pixel 6 pro. I've done it. ifixit sell legit batteries for it.

I had upgraded to a p9 pro xl and traded in by 6 pro. I got awarded €0 euro, so I returned the 9 and went back to the 6 pro. I noticed no real difference between them. Thermomoter was novelty. I intended to keep the 6 as long as it gets updates.

Hi All , I am looking into changing to a pixel

Is it correct that features like call recording and call notes are not available in Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,607 ✭✭✭wassie

Yes but its not a pixel thing, its due to legal issues and is a function of Andoid software. There are workarounds with third party apps if you want but you will have to do your own research.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,224 ✭✭✭ironictoaster

Seems like manual call screening is available going by this.

My Samsung has it , so looking to see what I'll lose by switching

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,798 ✭✭✭youngblood

Am tempted to trade pixel 7 in for the pixel 9, coming in at 397e with trade in.

    Worth the upgrade?

Had hoped to go for pixel pro9 but similar size one out of stock and deffo won't be able to afford the 10!

If anyone spots any deals on a 9 pro or pro XL please post in here.

I assume now that the 10 is going to be released we should start to see good deals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,787 ✭✭✭✭flazio

I'm typing this from a "Very good" condition refurbished Pixel 9 pro I got for €720 from refurbed.ie and I'm delighted with it. Not a scratch on it. I think I'm getting about €200 back for my Sony Xperia 5iv pending examination of the device. Hopefully they don't stress test it too much because the finger print scanner was starting to act up after an hour or two switched on.

    This too shall pass.
