Was it really best for the team though?

If they knew they weren't replacing him they shouldn't have let him go.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Talking about the toughness of the players in the 90s is a little bit pointless. That's 30 years ago now. It's like your dad saying Bobby Moore was a hardy bit of stuff

I’m not talking about toughness as in kicks the shins off ya.

I mean mentally tough. I think we’ve a weakness there.

More athletic probably, but with the increased athleticism the training protocols and procedures would have increased also.

Is a manager pressuring a player to power through not an issue in itself. Should a player not want to have the desire to power through it?

I’m not sure if players do have longer playing careers? Some players have elongated there careers like Ronaldo, but Rooney was finished as a too player in his mid 30’s. Each generation has players who stay playing longer and some players who retire early. Stanley Matthews played until he was 50.

IMO, it feels that we have a weakness right throughout the club. Players entitled, not thinking they have to train hard, leaks from the dressing room, injuries.

Again, I’m looking back to the glory years which isn’t always a fair comparison but regardless of the results, the attitudes and lack of desire wouldn’t be tolerated at the club.

This is a perfect opportunity for one of these youngsters to step up and claim a spot now. Every cloud and all that...

Yup. Am I remembering it wrong or was Rashford's promotion to the first team accelerated due to injuries?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,736 ✭✭✭✭JRant

That's right, someone (Martial I think) cried off just before kick-off and he got a start.

Amorim's comments in the press conference again speak to how much of a struggle he's finding it to motivate these players.

He said that they should be taking responsibility for people at the club losing jobs and ticket price rises because they're not winning and there's no CL revenue.

In some ways it's similar to his comments about them being the worst team in United's history and before Liverpool game he said they were afraid and nervous to play.

There's a pattern developing where he's consistently trying to use the media to provoke a reaction from the players. I don't criticise him for this at all. But it tells me that there's a major problem of motivation within this squad of players. He would not be saying these things if he felt the players were sufficiently motivated.

If that's his plan, it's dishonest. And eventually the squad will see through him using the media to motivate them and down tools... again.

Whatever he's trying to do, it's not working. Maybe he'll need the rest of this season and the summer with some new recruits to see results, but by Christ, this is painful.

He won't change the system? That's his right, but it could well be the sword he falls on. For the life of me, I can't understand being so welded to one particular style of play. In my mind, a "good" coach has the skillset to adapt his philosophy to the existing circumstances. What's he going to do when he gets the squad he wants, playing exactly how he wants, but other coaches figure it out and find a way to combat it? What's the philosophy then?

Man is in a job what.. 4 months

Hasnt had a full transfer window and walking in to a bombshell of a club.

    Yet..he's the problem.

Sure let's get rid of him and do the aul merry go round again.

He had to come in this mid season and rule out the players that are overpaid and underperforming.

Season is what it is now, the coach has an idea on what is needed vs what isn't.

Players in this squad are not up to standard physically and mentally.

The whole squad needs re-evaluating and nobody should feel safe and it's about fkin time

At last a bit of sense being posted, this is not a ‘quick fix job’.

    Major surgery required.

I predict Rasmus will not start today.

I thought the squad would be coming into the Spurs game rested after the mid week break and having played early last weekend but instead half the first time is now out injured. Heads down and just get to the end of May

If you're replying to my post, I never said sack him. He's got at least till the end of next season in my book.

But he's had 4 months and there's no improvement. And he's adamant he's sticking with his philosophy/system.

So either, the players can't be coached, the system doesn't work, or he can't explain it to them.

Now, most of these lads have played at other clubs under various managers with various systems. And were deemed good enough players by our club ( including current regime ) to pay very good money for them.

So if they were good players at the other clubs and they're not here, what happened? Are they all rubbish? All of them?

Everybody knows that there's been a toxic environment at the club for several years now, but new football management structure and coaching staff should be purging that by now.

Amorim will, hopefully get the time he needs, but I need to see some sort of upward trajectory soon.

What is the system/philosophy he was rigidity stuck to every game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,736 ✭✭✭✭JRant

Or we could look at it a different way. There's too many in the team that either can't live with the pace of the PL (Eriksen and Casemiro), can't stay fit (Shaw and Mount), are very young players who will naturally struggle with consistency (Mainoo, Garnacho, Hojlund, Yoro).

All of which is to say that the whole system thing is completely overblown IMO. We have a very low floor for the squad, too many very young players starting every week and a lack pace in key areas.

So tell me this, what system stops the above or makes Dalot not play like a drain every week?

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Man brought in to change system and mentality if club..... Criticise man for not going back to the same system and mentality that's seen the club fail for last decade.

All the evidence to me points to him being brought in to rip the team up and change it to his style and make no exceptions.

Wilcox mentioned at one point last year that the team needed an identy reset and they had to decide what style they wanted the team to play. It's fairly obvious amorims style is the style they want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,225 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

Still we have people complaining about Amorim sticking to his formation & system and how it might cost him his job.

Given the fact that he was brought in under the instruction to stick to his system and formation, he'd probably be more likely to get the sack if he DID change.

I think it was one of Statman Daves vids on Amorim but he does tweak his formation, we just aren't seeing it due to the players we have, he also showed him using a variant of 4-2-3-1 so it does happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 967 ✭✭✭jayo44

He does yeah. He needs players that can be fluid and play different positions. Id say Dorgu is an example of that and the reason Amad was thriving under him.

I never liked 5 at the back, are any top teams in Europe using it?

    Free Palestine 🇵🇸

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,777 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

Not top top but Atalanta use it and are doing well, Inter use it also, its supposed to be 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 but we didn't have proper wing backs until Dorgu arrived, Amad done well there but hes a 10.

3/5 at the back is very much in at the moment.

Bayer Leverkusen, Inter and Sporting all have found big success with variations of it in recent years.

Chelsea won the CL under Tuchel playing that way just a couple of seasons back.
