PSG get Neves for £60M, looking for similar for Ugarte off Utd. Utd should be cooling with PSG now, let them stew for a while

Waiting til August to move on to other cm choices feels poor. Season starts in a week. And our weakest or second weakest area, midfield, is worse than last season.

Yeah Ugarte plug should probably have been pulled a few days/week ago when PSG obviously just weren't budging. Wasted valuble time there.

It looked good with the speed of the Zirkzee and Yoro deals but then galacial again.

Ya we can't keep over paying for players because that's exactly how we are in this mess in the first place, given money is tight it's even more important to get value, the club can say they wont over pay as much as it wants but untill it shows they are willing to walk from some deals we will still be seen as a soft touch.

Im sure the club was some plans in place.

I do wonder if we could see mainoo tried as a 6 I know it's not his position but anything is better then casmaerio at this stage

They absolutely have alternatives, majority of clubs have done very little business, if by window end we only have 2 players signed its bad.

Bayern asked for more money for De Ligt and the RB, PSG want more than they paid for Ugarte, Fulham offering pennies for McTominay, I'd rather not be taken for mugs as usual. Theres gonna be a flurry of activity within the next 2 weeks.

Linked with Fofana at Monaco but not exactly a DM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,902 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

I thought he was off to Saudi?

We were linked with Zubimendi a week or so ago when Ugarte deal first stalled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,791 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

Zubimendi will have to be paid in full unless we do a Zirkzee type deal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,902 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Might be preferable. I'd love PSG to be stuck with Ugarte now. They are waiting for us to buckle and pay 60m and I hope to fùck we dont.

Send a great message to other clubs down the line.

Yeh I'm happy that we aren't doing the usual with transfer but do hope to Jaysus we have a good back up.

Here's hoping! Otherwise the decision for all the top boyos to head off on a Stateside jolly will seem very silly!

Ben Jacobs is a spoofer, was constantly plugging the Qatar bid that time and praising jassim alleging to know him well. Any transfer story he throws out appears to be be a rehash of links previously reported by others

Relax lads, window doesn't close for another 3.5 weeks. If PSG are being difficult, we move on instead of being the old way of panicking buying spending millions through the roof.

INEOS seem to have an idea and will have a list of targets for what we can afford so far. I've zero proof but I reckon there's workings going on behind the scenes for back up options.

We've no money this window because of the state the last regime put us in. Wait and see and judge it for when the window closes.

Ornstein mentions it in tweet so they definitely have back ups.

The DM market right now isn't great so I reckon it will be a young prospect.

I literally came here to say you got this spot on 😂

Sander Berge the best we can come up with? What on earth is Vivel being paid for is Sander Berge is the best we could come up with? Would only be at all acceptable if a cheap move for him enabled a second midfield signing, such as Foffana. Even at that, Berge being our first choice Defensive Midfielder is, frankly, laughable. Better than Casemiro, Eriksen, McTominay or Collyer, but that just further emphasises just how dire our needs are, and just how dire our attempt to solve them has been.

I'm genuinely perplexed at how bad our actions on midfield have been this summer. And to suggest it is a money issue when we have apparently bid like 40million for a second centre back before signing a first cm just doesn't ring true to me. Like I do think there are money issues, but to prioritise a second CB rather than actually getting a good midfielder in is madness imo.

Won't matter how good our defenders or attackers are, if our midfield is incapable of competing for the ball or offering us any control.

I see Dortmund sold the German striker to West Ham. They have money and freed a spot now for Sancho.

Thats some fee when they bought him for £14m

Berge by all accounts was Burnley's best player and one of their few bright spots. Won their Player of the Year and Player's Player of the Year. Also seemed to be one of Sheffield United's best players. Has been relegated twice now, though not much he can do to prevent that when surrounded by dross I guess.

Still, it does seem odd that he's our backup plan to Ugarte, even with budget considerations. I would be incredibly disappointed if he is our only midfield signing.

In a summer with multiple international tournaments, clubs on tour all around the world and a bunch of high profile management changes its no surprise that transfer business has been slow. Berge isn't a sexy name but he could be exactly what we need to enable Mainoo, Mount & Bruno to play their games. With 3 and a half weeks to go we are likely to still do a tonne of business shifting players like Sancho, Lindelof or Maguire, AWB, maybe Casemiro, Scotty McTominay, Pellistri and maybe a couple of youth players. I'd still expect the Bayern duo to arrive before the weekend, 2 midfielders and maybe another striker by the end of the window.

People stressing when Liverpool have no signings, Arsenal have 1 and City have 1 also, the next few weeks will see a flurry of activity.

Berge is a good player but another who I think isn't really a lone DM which is what is needed if Mainoo is going to be first choice.

Lot of square pegs in midfield already which is a problem.

Been a really good summer from us in my opinion. I'm pretty sure we are going to see more players come in the door but it's more that we have genuinely stopped being an easy touch.

I'd imagine Berge is a bit of a bluff but at the same time, he's actually a decent player and has been linked to some big clubs a number of times.

Defence has clearly been seen internally as a priority. Two centre halves have been identified as required. Midfield is clearly seen as an area in need of attention but a striker and defence were seen as more of a priority, rightly or wrongly. The market for holding midfielders is also really small at the moment.

Lads he is only the list, he isn't signed yet. United have probably reached out to a few more clubs/players but doesn't mean we are signing them. Berge is a good player, maybe the type of signing we need along with others.

Could also be a push towards PSG lowering their demands for Urgate, I still think he joins as PSG will want him gone now with Neves in so a loan to buy be a nice deal. 2 lads from Bayern, maybe Amrabat/Berge with Urgate & talk of Chilwell being looked at.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,942 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

I do think we need two CMs.
I do think Berge would be a good pick up as the second CM signing.
But at this point I can't help but fear Berge will be the CM signing. Or we'll get two and it would be him at Amrabat. Which just isn't where we need to be.

Again, I am gutted we didn't move for Onana.

Fully agree. We've also heard from TotD podcast that ETH has had daily discussions with Wilcox, Berrada & Ashworth during the US Tour. From everything we are hearing this is a management team all working in unison to get us the best players available within our means. Nobody had us in the running for Yoro and we got that deal done. Zirkzee had a buyout clause and we still worked out a better deal for us right now based on paying a couple of million more over the term of his deal, that's the kind of business we havnt done since David Gill left. The end of the window is when to judge INEOS/the management team, not now with over 3 weeks still to go
