I would think the opposite. Pharmaceutical companies need long term stability, USA is the exact opposite at the moment.

The democracy index has long scored the USA as a "flawed democracy". Just how flawed it is has now been exposed.

Unless there is a fundamental change in the USA political system I think it will be seen as too volatile a location for long-term investment in new manufacturing sites.

The executive powers of the president need to be reigned in and federal policy put firmly in the hands of more representative senate and house of representatives, elected with a more proportional electoral system.

We've seen behind the curtain and the wizard is just a confused old man.

was she a Trump voter ? I think that will be significant factor in my sympathy levels

The Tech companies account for a fair chunk of that GNI, as well as financial services. China has always shunned Google and I can see a lot of these other companies facing competition from Europe etc as alternatives are offered as no one really has any faith in America anymore.

Christine Legard has already called for European alternatives to Mastercard and Visa. Europe is working on starlink alternatives. Add on top the growth of European defence industry and decline of the US defence industry and that GNI is going to be eaten into pretty quickly.

And that's just Europe. South America, Asia, Africa and Australia have all been burned and will be only to happy to shun America and their constant **** stirring.

Gas interview on Newstalk earlier with the former US ambassador to Greenland and Denmark who reckons Article 3 in NATO supersedes Article 5 , I.e Greenland needs to be capable of of their own protection.

Yes, exactly. If she voted for Harris, she has my sympathy that her fellow Americans got her into this scenario through no fault of her own.

If she voted for Trump, you reap what you sow, ESPECIALLY as a importer business who must have known Trump's claims about China paying tariffs were nonsense, and the danger to your business of him being elected.

It reminds me of a mind numbing interview I saw on ITV during Brexit which went like this:

Business Owner: "It's been a disaster. I import fresh produce from Europe. That is no longer feasible with all the custom delays now and the short shelf life of the products".

Interviewer: "How did you vote in the referendum" .

Business Owner: "I voted for Brexit".

Interviewer: "But as someone who trades with Europe, did you not consider the impact it would have on your business".

Business Owner: "I didn't really think of that, no. I probably should have".

On a lighter note what's going on with the bonce?

Looks like a serious case of bed head.

Trump is doing enough damage, no doubt about that, but a tariff bill going from 26K to 346K is a 1300% increase, not 104%. There must be something else afoot.

Things are bad enough without posting excessively misleading information.

For the record though, the panel sounded like they were hearing that American companies pay the tariffs for the first time.

our government could have seen corporation tax as a short term advantage used to develop indigenous industry and so nothing that hasn’t been said on here.

She mentions it's textiles, I can't find the pre Trump rate, but if it was 8% and now it's 104%, that would be a 1300% increase.

But if her estimated tariff bill she expected was 24k, she would have been importing goods worth over 300k and not 30k (well she does say over 30k and 300k is over 30k)

Definitely misleading or she's not being completely honest.

Was discussing it with a colleague earlier and the low risk funds ended up hit more badly than the higher risk stuff. Low risk is what anyone nearing retirement would be in so that would be an unpleasant hit and could easily result in a postponed retirement.

Don't think ozempic would be one that could legitimately be paused just cause it is used for things like diabetes.

Listening to the latest news , I get the impression he was just acting the big man to his MAGA followers , and is now realising that he’s fcuked badly . His climb down will be hilarious .

You are mixing up 2 different story's, the first story was on Fox and they were importing special needs toys, different to the woman in the tweet

I heard Paschal on with Pat Kenny this morning though and overall he said he was quietly optimistic Ireland would be able to weather the storm. It's not as if Ireland was teetering on the edge of recession when the orange fruitcake took office three months ago - the economy was and is in great shape and the country is at full employment. We may well be in a position to manage a global downturn and not have to go through some sort of huge financial crash, even if we have a rocky period for the next while.

Ha...his latest social media post. Trump causes chaos with the world's stock markets to then announce a 90 day pause.

It does look like 10% is immediate though.

China tariff up to 125% now according Trump

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,960 ✭✭✭✭cj maxx

Already he has postponed the tariffs on every country apart from China .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,459 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

You're right, but an ~8% tariff rate increasing to a 104% tariff rate would account for the increase in tariffs on the toys from 26k to 346k

I read that, I wonder if it's real this time or just another hoax!

This guy is a complete and utter freak. No company in their right mind would even consider investing a shed load of cash in opening new factories in the US while this guy is in charge. The US is a complete and utter laughing stock under this man.

CNBC is reporting that Trump has posted on his site "Truth Social" that he has authorised a ninety [90] day stay on the tariffs he put on all countries bar China. RTE has spoken of the same on it's news headlines.

Is this Trump blinking first in a fight between equals?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 651 ✭✭✭poop emoji

125% now the yo-yo is like a cruel job on any business wishing stability

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 973 ✭✭✭homewardbound11

This is madness who one man can rant and cause markets to dip or rise by 10 percent in minutes of his stupidity on social media .

when is the stop button going to be pressed on this ugly man.

Can I ask a question to anyone who is from economics background. If china keep dumping bonds and the us bonds rise high enough . Could it be possible America defaults on its loans and what would happen to the rest of the world if the dollar and US are no longer a pillar of world trade .

It can cause difficulties but I doubt enough to bring down the dollar

They have aboutish 750 out of 4200bn in securities

Depends if it starts a stampede (possible) Ireland has 336bn in comparison

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,008 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

So his Tarriffs that he made a big song and dance about last week are 'paused' on the same day they were brought in, except for China, the only other billy-big-balls in town, where its gone up to 125% in the latest round of willy-waving.

    Absolute cretin.

Trump has absolutely blinked first - looking forward to his sycophantic followers refusing to admit it. Though obviously the trade war with China isn’t going to stop anytime soon. Numbers are just getting silly now.

Never give up hope Oscar, we're saved again! No need for the prayer sins now. We shall prevail!

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?
